By default, VoiceOver does not start automatically at the macOS login prompt. In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to change this. The steps to do so are as follows:
- Choose Apple > System Settings, and select Lock Screen in the table.
- Click accessibility options and toggle the “VoiceOver” switch on.
- Click done.
On some older Mac models, if FileVault disk encryption is turned on, which is the default, VoiceOver should start when the Mac boots and prompt for the username, and then prompt for the password if the username is entered correctly. However, if you’d rather not have to manually enter your username or be able to navigate other elements in the window, you must turn FileVault off. To do this, open System Settings, select Privacy & Security in the table, and click “FileVault turn off.”

Good job Tyler, but not impressed Apple
If Apple eventually wants to sell me a computer, they need to do a LOT better than this! Disable a feature like file vault just so I can explore log in? What IDIOT at Apple came up with that lame-brained concept! My iPhone starts up with VoiceOver once I have VoiceOver turned on, so why wouldn't my computer? Seems rather backward on Apple's part. I also wasn't impressed with the VO grove whatever keystroke because I have smaller hands and I know where grove is on a standard keyboard. Been so long since I was on a Mac keyboard that I can't recall, but am guessing it is in approximately the same place. Perhaps I will change my mind after I have opportunity to play around with a current Mac enough; after all, there are overly complicated keystrokes on JAWS I simply never use, so perhaps it's a matter of finding what works for oneself. I'm just losing a lot of faith in Apple products lately; major bugs in TVOS; major bugs in IOS 16, despite all the time some visually impaired were allegedly testing and reporting bugs; iPhone hardware which isn't entirely right out of the box, despite all the time that's existed to prevent this sort of thing from happening. It would be different if the prices were lower, but for the premium price, I expect a LOT better for my money.
The Globe key is the key…
The Globe key is the key immediately to the left of the Control key, at the bottom left of the Apple keyboard.
