Possible Bug in iOS 16.1 Regarding Notifications On Lock Screen

I updated My SE 2020 iPhone to 16.1 and...almost ever since, am finding that whenever a notification comes in, Voice Over just says "notification" (sometimes it'll tell me how many I have, but in order to hear what the notification says, I must go in and swipe to it; this was not always the case! To my knowlege, all the settings are set as they should be to allow the notification to be read automatically on my lock screen; the only other time I remember seeing this was back when IOS11 came out. So it would seem to me that there is either a bug...or maybe something got broken in IOS16.1! Hopefully this gets fixed with the next update, which I hope isn't too far away!

I'm also seeing this issue on my iPhone SE 2020. Annoyingly, the notification has focus, so before I can move focus to it, I have to move focus away first, then return, in order to have VO read the notification.

Yes. 12 pro. Just VO says notification 2 times. Does not read what is the notification about. Getting tire of Apple. Hope android get their act together and make their talkback better than VO. If that happens, I am history.

AI have an iPhone 13 mini and I have checked that my notifications are still set to always.

Hi all,

I’m seeing the same issue. Oddly enough when an email comes in it gets announced and read, but this is the only exception. All other notifications such as iMessage or WhatsApp messages or in app notifications are not read, just announced as such. I have reported this to accessibility, I hope many others do as well. What a strange and annoying bug. Hoping this gets fixed soon. I hope all stay safe and healthy.
Have a great day

Hi folks

With my iphone xr I can reproduce this bug.
I know and fully understand that Applevis takes no responsability in issuing its bug listings before any update but I am extremely disappointing that this tramendous bug together with all the new dictation and siri bugs in ios16.1 were not mentioned.

Hi Guys,

This first appeared on my iPhone 13 pro in iOS 16.1 public beta 2. 3 or 4 betas later and the release of 16.1 it hasn't been fixed. So, wouldn't hold you're breath this will be fixed anytime soon. Hopefully I'm wrong about that as it is annoying.

Do not wait for it. You might go hungry. Probably iOS 17. Android might a nice phone. Galaxy ultra if they make talkback better than VO.

Forgive me, Holger, but not a day goes by where I don't read under one topic or another that you're about to decamp to Android; and yet something keeps holding you back. Is it that you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave?

By Holger Fiallo on Thursday, November 24, 2022 - 09:20

Talkback. That is what. Sad but true. I probably would not be the only. Most blind people giving a choice if talkback is better they will say hello android. Including you if you are honest.

This was a thing since 16.1 beta. Though annoying, they did fix quite a few glitches in 16.0, and this was fallout. You can work around it, after a fashion, if you turn on announce notifications, and then enable the accessibility preference to have announced notifications come from your speaker in addition to your headphones.

Hi guys, I am encountering the same issue here on my Se 2020, and even here in Italy that's been discussed. So yeah I think it's really a bug. You need to flick right/left in order to see notifications, but VO does not read them automatically.

Holger, this is Honest bingo calling: I promise you, in all sincerity and on my oath, being a blind person of full capacity, that I am not contemplating switching to Android. nor can I conceive of circumstances in which I would in the short- to medium-term. I'm jolly happy with my iPhone unlucky 13 and it's marvellous marvelous marvellous. However, I do hope you won't leave because I very much enjoy reading your comments about how you are going to leave. What happened to Bella the cat? and the very nice lady who got your iPhone?

I actually don't mind it doesn't speak the notifications. I didn't like it at first, but since I have a crap ton of news apps, I don't really need them blabbering on at it. If it gets fixed fine. If not, np.

Well, of course, it's supposed to be controlled by the VoiceOver preference to speak notifications. They should fix it, and then you can choose the behaviour you like.

I think it’s probably about three weeks since you posted.
And I have the same issue with notifications and I do not like it.
I used to be able to just go through and read my notifications now I have to unlock the phone and actually swipe down and get the notifications from inside the phone.
Totally ridiculous way they did it.
