needing extra help on selecting text.

Hi all, I know there has been some recent discussion about selecting text, but I'm still having trouble with it. I have heard that chrome is supposed to be more reliable with this than safari, however I haven't noticed this to be the case. When I am on a block of text on a webpage, I have not been able to successfully use the VO+return command to begin selecting. Additionally, I have tried using VO+shift+right arrow for characters and VO+Function+Shift+arrow keys to select words, however the process has been much slower with my mac than with my previous windows computer and I often end up accidentally selecting something other than what I want to select. To be clear, I do have the voice over cursuer working with my mouse if that makes a difference. Are there any tricks that you all have for selecting text that I have not yet come across? Thank you.
