I understand that with IOS 16 I can access apps from the lock screen. How do I do this? I thank you in advance.

It's not possible to move apps to the lock screen, but some apps do offer lock screen widgets. At present, these are mainly the Apple apps like weather, calendar, reminders, etc. The only non-Apple app I've seen to offer lock screen widgets is Facebook, but I suspect other apps will be adding lock screen widgets eventually.

Your own mileage will likely vary, but my experience has been that many of the apps I routinely use have added support for Lock Screen widgets. These can essentially be used as app launchers, so it's worth checking to see if the apps you want on the Lock Screen do have widgets available.

There are also a small number of apps which allow you to create Lock Screen widgets which are launchers for other apps. I've no personal experience of any of these apps, but they might be worth investigating if you want to go that route.

If you use the apps locklauncher or ShortFlow, you can launch apps or components of apps like the money reader from Seeing AI or Find object from Envision AI. You need to use the Shortcuts app to set that up first. If you need help, search Blind iPhone on clubhouse.

Some of the hype I was hearing made it sound like a great new feature. Perhaps it is. It's just not what I was expecting.

To the original poster, if you were wanting to be able to launch an app directly from the locked screen, check the app that you want to launch, if it has a widget, then you can add it to your Lock Screen, by utilizing the customize wallpaper functions that we now have. So, in use, all you would do is add the widget, then access your lock screen, and double tap on that app, which will open it all the way up. Not all, but most app developers are now adding this functionality to their apps. Hope this helps.
