I'd switch to it if it sounded like it does on the PC.

Also, it's so quiet.

Despite the issues mentioned, I am thrilled to have Read on my iphone after so many years. For some reason I have just never liked any of the iphone voices, even though some of them are of high quality. I have always wanted to be able to use my phone to read books, wanting the same experience as with my Windows PC, but could never find a way to do this. Now, using Voice Dream Reader I am finally able to do this. The speed is still not perfect, but I can live with it. After upgrading Eloquence sounds quite clear to me, without obvious quirks, except the apostrophe thing. Like with my pc, I also use Read for Afrikaans, my first language, messages, although not to read books in Afrikaans. I guess it all comes down to personal preference in the end. I am just thankful the option is there for us now and hoping it can only get better with constructive inputs from those on the tech side and the community.

To me, this is what Eloquence sounds like. it's as though the poor chap is talking into his coffee cup. I'm talking about the British English version which I know a lot of people don't like but, you know, I've been using that voice for 22 years with Jaws and I love it. i used Eloquence with Talks and a Nokia 7610, N70 and finally 6220 classic. Eloquence was as clear as a bell on all those phones. I also have to agree with Brad - Eloquence on IOS is considerably quieter than other voices, which means I have to mess with the Voiceover volume rotor.

To be clear, I'm very glad the option for Eloquence exists and hurrah to all of you who are enjoying using it. I thought i would enjoy it too, but it needs a bit of work before it can feature in the Bingo Little first team. Hopefully it will improve. Until then, it's a combo of UK Siri female and Jamie enhanced for me, depending on the context...though I do wish Jamie would make up his mind as to where he's from. Hhe's so well-spoken most of the time but the way he says words like 'mark' it's as though he's the front man for the Wurzels! I am the cider-drinker, etc.

I have no problem with eloquence, but for me, it’s not a huge dealbreaker as I’ve used in the past with the windows computers and I don’t think it’s really necessary to have it on iOS, but I guess to me it comes across more as a reminiscing aspect of speech Text to speech that people seem to think that should be on there. I personally won’t use it on my iPhone even though I have iOS 16, but good luck to people who want to have it. there are a hell of a lot. Better voices out there that you can use. That’s my take on it but happy voice using

By kool_turk on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

On my iPhone 12 Eloquence is louder than Fred, not by much, but I still prefer Fred because of the apostrophe thing and the long pauses that this Eloquence seems to have.

hi all,

I submitted feedback on the beta of iOS, to have all the Mac voices on iOS. usually, Apple never confirms feedback has been received, and when I herd all mac voices came to iOS, as of iOS 16 developer beta, I was exstatic! still am yeah, being a mac user, am used to them! for those who wish them gone, stop wining! it drives me crazy! people on this site complain of bugs and features that they don't want, and think they represent everybody! if you don't like mac voices, file feedback on them! just because the majority on AppleVis do not like the nolvelty voices, doesn't mean everybody doesn't like them! man up, join the apple beta software program, free, or the apple developer program, $99 a year, and submit feedback. otherwise, I don't want to here from you! As far as eloquence is concerned, it was the best in developer beta 5. I hope they bring that back, as an optional setting, like eloquence is in Android! it takes space, but on Android, it's 7 MB. so not much space. I notice the announcing of surtain puncuation, I don't know how to reproduce that consistently so I can submit a bug report to Apple. the quolity is not JAWS, but really, not everyone can afford that anyway. eloquence on iOS is great, considering it is free. Android it was $20, code ffactory $70 for three licenses, but Apple took a stand to stand up to Vispero and code factory, and say, some blind people don't make much money, we're buying Eloquence, Vispero and Code Factory, bee all right with that, we own it, and we can bar you from using it! good job Apple!

By Lily Rose on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I don't like the novelty voices, but I really don't like all this complaining either. Stop it, people! It's not helping anybody!

By Igna Triay on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

So apple now owns code factory?

By Daniel Angus M… on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

so Apple owns Eloquence, as they purchased it from code factory and Vispero. both companies pay apple to use Eloquence, and I exspect eloquence on Apple will eventually have the pronounciation dictionary vispero uses.

By Henrik on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

hi. I'm pretty sure the reason for this was that Nuance kept developing it, and they made a higher quality version of it specifically for phone speakers. On windows it remained at 11 khz, but for phones it was upgraded to 16. This also made it into the android version, and my only wish would be that it would get implemented in the IOS one as well, but I just don't have a lot of hope right now. If this would make it into IOS, I'm pretty sure that it would fix the muffled sound too.

By Ekaj on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

Neat that Apple now owns the Eloquence synthesizer. I briefly heard it in action on an audio demonstration of something I got in a newsletter. Not AppleVis but another one. Eloquence sounded great then, and I'm so excited to use it when Mac OS Ventura is released to the masses and when I upgrade to my second iPhone.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I check eloquence and do not see what people talking about how great. Voice is bad. Would had prefer that apple focus on addressing bugs with iOS 16 instead of giving us a speach program that is not even that good.

By Lily Rose on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I noticed something as scrolling through some of the other languages to find the new voices and sample them, and noticed something and find rather funny and very noteworthy!
Go to settings > accessibility > voiceOver > Speech > Add New Language. Select Italian. Open the italian and select Eloquence. With Eddy I find it the most prominent but you can reproduce this with pretty much all of them. So, Eloquence says "Ciao" in the sample, do not know why, just the way they designed it, I suppose. But sample any of them (especially Eddy) and you should find that it sounds mad or just plain harsh on the word "Ciao". Definitely not the right inflection for a cute and informal way of saying hi inItalian! LOL and let me know what you think!

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I check it and was disappointed. Is not that great. I was hoping the sane quality as in my windos PC but not. I would had prefer that apple focus on bugs instead of giving us something that is not worth the price of a burger. Do not get why people like it so much.

By Vsevolod Popov on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

What is the difference everyone are mentioning that Eloquence sounds different in Jaws and iOS except of pronunciation dictionary?

By Roxann Pollard on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

First things first, I only use the Reed voice, in the Freedom Scientific version of jaws. All other voices, in my opinion, don't perform well. According to my ears, the jaws version on Windows PC is clean, Chris, has high volume, is robust in it's performance, it has no problems pronouncing English words correctly and speaking sentences appropriately, regarding punctuation.

On the iOS platform, it sounds like a cup has been shoved over its face, the volume dropped considerably, clarity of word pronunciation also has Gotten worse, and even dropping speech rate considerably lower, does not fix this for me. Apparently, according to those on this thread, Code Factory has produced a version of jaws, along with Freedom Scientific. It is the Freedom Scientific version of Code Factory that everyone loves. Before this thread, I wasn't aware that Code Factory had released their version. I don't think that Code Factory continues to release a version of Jaws today, however.
It is really sad that, apparently Apple has chosen the Code Factory version. The Freedom Scientific version of jaws is simply fantastic, in my opinion. I experience no listener fatigue, after many, many hours of use each day, and have no problems with pronunciation of any words that I encounter. I can use a very high rate of speed, without clarity of word pronunciation or word comprehension dropping, whatsoever.

I was certainly hoping that it would be as good on the iOS platform for me, but sadly, no.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

Agree. Quality is better.

By Igna Triay on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

For those of you who are used to jaws's elequence, of course it'll sound different, but for those of us , who use nvda as our primary screenreader... we're already used to code factory's elequence and since this one is the same one, its no big deal.

By Mlth on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

@Holger isn't it the third time in this entire thred you're saying that you don't like this version of eloquence? I think people get it by now...

Malthe

By Lily Rose on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

Yes, we know your oppinion, going on and off this thread saying the same thing isn't helping anyone. Thank you.

By Brad on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

As far as I understand it's legal.

I use it on NVDA, if the code factory version sounds like eloquence on IOs, it's not that nice in my oppinion.

By JC on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

As far as my testing goes, the only voice that has no issues on speed is Flow. the other voices, such as Reed, Shelley, Etc, goes very slow, and the only workaround I found is to add the speaking rate to the rotor, and adjust it from their. other than that, I use flow, with Speed set at 30%, and since the default pitch is 50%, I have lowered it to 1%, and that's perfect for me.
Everyones opinions are different.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I was not aware that was a limit on what you can say. I was agreeing with her. If you do not care, please do not read. If there is a limit on posting please let me and others no. Thanks.

By Lily Rose on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

They do all seem to have different speeds. Flo sounds like she's out of breath that's how fast she is, Shelley is way too slow, and so are Grandma and Grandpa, the rest I think are just fine speedwise.

By Igna Triay on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

There's not a limit as to what you can say. What malth is referring to, is that you've said the same thing, pretty much, over and over again. Only once is enough, you don't have to repeat yourself for people to get your point of view. I mean first this,
I check eloquence and do not see what people talking about how great. Voice is bad. Would had prefer that apple focus on addressing bugs with iOS 16 instead of giving us a speach program that is not even that good.
Then this,
I check it and was disappointed. Is not that great. I was hoping the sane quality as in my windos PC but not. I would had prefer that apple focus on bugs instead of giving us something that is not worth the price of a burger. Do not get why people like it so much.
Point beeing, this is the second time in just a couple posts where your repeating yourself, saying the same thing over and over again. That is what malth is referring to, you don't have to say things more than once for people to get your viewpoint on the matter.
Look, you have a right to be pissed do to x or y reason, no one is debating that point. You have the right to have your own opinion. Again, no debate or argument there. But you've posted the same thing in two posts, where your saying the same exact thing, prety much. That's why malth said what he did. You already gave your opinion on the matter once. We get it, to each his own. But your repeating your viewpoint over and over again. You said it once. That's more than enough. If you have something else to say, do so, but if your just going to say the same thing over and over again. I mean that's kind of a waiste of time as you've already expressed said opinion once.

By Holger Fiallo on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

OK. I was not aware that people needed to limit their view. When this became Russia?

By Igna Triay on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

Again. Your not getting my point. I never said limit your view. What i'm saying; is that across several posts, you've repeated the same thing over and over. I mean in two if not posts you've said the same thing, you don't like eloquence, and that you'd rather apple fix bugs than add new voices. What i'm going towards, is, you've repeated yourself in two posts. No where did I tell you to stop it with your viewpoints or limit them; all i'm trying to make you aware of, is that you've repeated your point of view multiple times in the same topic. That's all i'm getting towards.
I'll give you a example. If I where to post 5 times in this topic, and all my posts contained the following,
I like elequence and if you don't like it that's fine, everyone has their own opinion.
Now. Imagine that same thing beeing repeated over and over in 5 or more posts i've made throughout this topic. I'm sounding like a broken record, because would be repeating the same thing over, and over, and over, and over; again, and people would tell me to quit it, because I already posted, that I like eloquence and if for those that don't its fine, already once. I don't need to repost my opinion more than once.
You get where i'm going at with this?
Put another way, if your say, talking to a friend, and your talking as an example, about mac. Your friend starts going on about how windows is better than mac, and over and over throughout your Conversation, your friend keeps repeating that windows is better than mac. You already heard his viewpoint once, that windows was better than mac. As time went up and your friend brought up the same view point, you'd probably start to tell him that he already said that.
This is basicly that. Malth, and I are trying to tell you that your repeating what you've said multiple times. That's all this is.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

I haven't tried using BSI yet and however it responds to that will tell me for sure whether it's a go or not, but with my headphones, it sounds exactly like my JAWS.

By Igna Triay on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

From what i've been able to tell, elequense is way more responsive in b s i compared to all other voices. With other voices, I type so fast that most voices just, stop talking, requiering me to slow down my typing so I can hear what i'm typing, but eloquence keeps up, even though I type really, really fast.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, October 23, 2022 - 12:47

If there's a way to set up Eloquence to start whenever I go into BSI, I'm going to do it. I also type really, really fast and I hate being slowed down.

By Dominic on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

Are use IBM TTS onto Windows computers
IBM TTS has more customisation and has better voice quality.
I like eloquence anyway.
I was basically forced to use it when I was in 2022 in grade 7 in school using jaws.
Eloquence is good enough for me on the iPhone.
However, it sounds tiny unlock the iPad or the MacBook.
I don’t mind the voice quality, it just sounds a bit tinny.

By Ali Colak on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

Always loved it. Ä°'ve never been too fond of the human sounding voices with the possible exception of Caron and Eva. Eloquence isn't as good as what it is on the PC but Ä° don't see myself giving it up.

By Ekaj on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

I'm still using my trusty iPhone 7 so can't comment on the iOS version of Eloquence yet, but it sounds great on my M1 MacBook Air and is very responsive. This is true of both American-English and British-English. It's actually kind of funny, because now with both Eloquence and eSpeak on here I have multiple voices with the same names.

By Henrik on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

there is a very specific thing that Code Factory changed regarding crash words. This is the case for both windows and android. They broke the pronunciation of a bunch of weekdays this way because they didn't do it correctly. I guess it's possible that Apple made a deal with them and fixed these specific things on their end, but I somehow really doubt that.

By Brad on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

I have no idea what version that is but it sounds like its using that one. I know its a very old synth but for as long as its around I'll keep using it, the IBM version I mean on windows.

By Leela on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

I was so excited and I am happy it got put on iOS. I'm kind of a synthesizer nerd, so I love having access to lots of voices. Eloquence is one of the most unique sounding synthesizers out there, and I think it deserves to be preserved. Sometimes I use it, but I switch voices often, so right now I'm using Samantha.

By Henrik on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 12:47

I went off Eloquence for about 10 years, but I somehow found myself going back to it, and I've grown to like it even more than I used to. Personally I think it's nice to listen to for long stretches of time, and I'm happy that it's being kept alive. I was honestly starting to think that the source code was either lost, or that no one would bother using it for anything. I just wish that Apple would make it possible for people to customize it more. Eloquence is very flexible and powerful for its time, but unfortunately we're not getting much of that.

By Claus on Thursday, November 23, 2023 - 12:47

This is a very old thread and I agree origianlly the voice was worse than I had hoped, and in the first few versions it suffered from anoying crackling sounnds that fortunately is gone.
The biggest problem now is the forced use of abbreviations. The list is longer that I have seen in other eloquence implementation, and Voiceover unlike almost all other screen reader s does not give the user the option to disable built in abbreviations. Something Apple should fix as soon as possible. Actually you should never force simple stupid automated abbreviations on users but if you do we need a way to disable them!!, both in Eloquence and the Nuance voices.
