Apple books in iOS 16, where is the status bar?

Hi everyone.
Is it just me, or has Apple Books changed quite drastically in iOS 16? Firstly, books seem to be spread across the screen now, with voiceover making little clicking noises whenever you do a continuous read. This is irritating in itself, however the most inconvenient loss as far as I can see is the loss of the status bar. Without the status bar, it isn't possible to initiate a continuous read using the spoken content feature and thus lock my screen. Has anyone else noticed this or is there something I've missed? Thanks.

Fortunately the status bar can be switched back on. Go to Settings, Books and after some swiping you will hear or read the following:
Show Status Bar, Always display current time, battery level and other iPhone status info while reading.
Just check the box and the status bar will reappear.

That did the trick, thanks for sharing.

Apple books has become very unpleasant in iOS 16. As OP mentioned continuous reading now includes a click with each new line. I turned off the sound associated with rapping, but that has had no impact on continuous reading, where I still here an annoying click. Also, by removing the tool bar, there is no way I have found to see how many pages remain in a given chapter. What a bummer.
