Ending the call with Side Button

Despite this feature in IOS16, I am not able to end calls by pressing the side button. The side button only locks the phone during the call, whether the call is on speaker or earpiece. Any help in this regard would be great! I have ensured that the option to prevent lock to end call is off, and have rebooted the device as well.

I can't get this feature to work when the phone is up to my ear. It also won't work if the phone is on speaker. The only way I could get it to work was to take the phone from my ear and let it switch to speaker. I then had to hide the keypad and deselect speaker with VoiceOver. After the phone was off of speaker, I could end the call with the side button. I have reported this behaviour to Apple.

Hi it's happns to me to with ios 16, I am using an iPhone 13 pro.
I had try to reboot my phone, turn the setting on and off, but with no success.

I have 12 mini, and it is not working as will

By Brooke on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

I haven't yet reported it to Apple but will do so today.

Try holding down the side button and saying, "hang up", assuming you have activated the siri side button feature.

By Lielle ben simon on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

Hi again, I didn't succeed to hanging up the call with Siri.
I told her "hang up the call" and Siri doesn't do anything.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

I don't see the point of holding down the side button to get Siri to hang up. That's not what it says, it's supposed to work with Hey Siri, and you never need the side button for that.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

therefore, it should work.

By Earle on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

Yes, it should definitely work on that device. Did you turn the feature on under siri and search settings? If so, the only other thing I can think of is to turn it on and off again. You could also try resetting hey siri and see if that helps. It's working on my 12 Pro

By Ramy on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

I think it is all ready on, we can tern it off or not, am i wrong?

By kool_turk on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

It is on by default, but it doesn't seem to work, not on my iPhone 12 at least.

By tripolice on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

The option is to prevent lock button to end calls, which means one should be able to end calls by pressing the side button. It is off by default. But pressing the button nothing happens. IF it works as expected, then users who won't want the button to end calls may turn the option on.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

I'll try your suggestions. Hey Siri works properly otherwise.

By Jo Billard on Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 20:11

I am often on the phone for quite a long time, and usually I lock my screen but sometimes forget, and then my screen lock does it for me. My guess is that it probably does affect it and I turned the setting off, but just wanted to be sure, and I'll admit, I'm not sure I want to find out the hard way. :)

hi,
no matter what i do, despite what people have said above, it still does not work.
i will start from the beginning.
ios 18.1 installed. iphone 11. using voice over.
under accessibility, touch:
"prevent lock from to end call" is off.
under accessibility, side button:
press and hold to speak" classic.
i can set this to siri or off, but still nothing works.
any ideas?
i know this topic is old, but surely it works now at this stage.
what am i doing wrong please?

regards,

patrick

Another way to end a call is to just double-tap with two fingers on the phone.

By Brooke on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

This has never worked for me, and it still doesn't. I've switched the toggle from Off to On, back to Off, multiple times. No change.

By Earle on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

It is working for me. I'm using an iPhone 16 Pro Max. This phone is running iOS 18.2 Dev. Beta 2.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

No. 16 pro max iOS 18.1.

To enable ending calls using the side button, you need to turn off the automatic speaker-switching option. When this option is on, the phone automatically switches to speaker mode when moved away from your ear. This feature can be inconvenient, so it’s best to disable it. I hope this helps.

By Earle on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

I have automatic switching to speaker turned on, and I can still end calls with the side button.

By Jeff on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Automatic switching to speaker is a convenience, not an inconvenience. I use it on many of my calls. Of course, I use the magic tap to hang up, so I don't know if hanging up with the side button works or not.

By Brian on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Also be sure that under settings, accessibility, Touch (under Physical and Motor heading), you have "Prevent lock to end call" disabled.

HTH. 😇

Magic tab has aways worked, no matter what. The most reliable to pick up and hang up calls.

Ending a call with the side button used to be one of my favorite iPhone features, but at least for me, it hasn't worked at all since the iPhone 5S. I was super excited when the feature was supposedly brought back a couple of years ago, but so far, it's never worked for me. Using iPhone 13 Pro currently, but may end up with a regular iPhone 16 at some point fairly soon. Anyway, I'll be watching this thread for any tricks I can try to get the ending calls with side button feature working again. I haven't been able to use it for the majority of the time I've been an iPhone user, but when it worked, it was awesome!

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

thanks to you all.
just to let you know, i was on to the accessibility line last saturday, and even they didn't know why it was not working.
they were screen sharing with me, so they could see my settings.
the magic tap is fine, but i would find this handy, and anyway, if it is supposed to work, why doesn't it?
i also tried it with voiceover turned off, and it still did not work.

By Brian on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Has anyone been able to get this to work on any iPhone, from iPhone X to the latest iPhone models? In other words any iPhone that does not have a home button? I am just curious here. ☺️

By Lee on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Brian, interestingly when you mentioned the home button it rang a bell. I have a feeling in other posts on this the home button was the issue. Or, should I say the lack of one. Could be wrong but I'm sure I recall this.

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

never tried it on a phone with a home button. the last one of those i had was an iphone 7, and at that stage i was just coming out of the "dark ages" when we had to use button phones.
however, i am thinking that it must be a full ios bug, since even with voiceover turned off, it still does not work.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Do not ever recall it working. 11 pro max, 12 pro, 13 pro 16 pro max. When I had the 4s, 5, 7 and x sdid not used instead I used magic tap.

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

yep, like yourself, i was so new to the iphone 7 that i tended to use the magic tap wherever i could until i got a little more used to the phone.
just on a side issue, does anyone know where i can get a full list of what can be done with voiceover from start to finish?
sorry, not really meant for here, but just curious.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

The iOS 18 has a tutorial for VO if is that what you looking for.

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

thanks, seems to be what i am looking for.

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

Just finished talking to a wonderful lady and when we finished I press the side button. No. Did not work.

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 11, 2024 - 20:11

somehow, during my various testing of various settings, i actually got the phone to lock rather than end the call.
dont ask me how i did it, i was just pressing the side button, and suddenly it locked.
i could still talk, but the magic tap wouldn't end the call, i had to put in my pass code again to get access to the phone app etc.
this was earlier in the week before i started this post.
interesting though, that the phone will lock somehow rather than ending the call.
i am not sure, but i think, at the time, i was holding the side button down continuesly and then heard the lock sound, but i can't be sure how i did it.

By Brian on Monday, November 18, 2024 - 20:11

From my subject line, this is the last model iPhone where the side button actually worked to hang up calls, for me at least. I currently have an iPhone SE3 and while it does have a home button, the side button only locks the phone, does not hang up calls. Whether or not I have the little box checked under accessibility/touch. I have a theory on this, but not really sure how to test it out. However, my theory is that, when they added the SOS feature, they ruined the side button to hang up call feature. For those of you who do not know, SOS allows you to either Hold the side button for a long time, or press it up to five times to call emergency services in your area.

Again, I have no way of testing this out, but that is my theory. Kind of wish I had an older model iPhone, I could then at least test it with FaceTime audio calls.

By Missy Hoppe on Monday, November 18, 2024 - 20:11

This feature only worked when i had the iPhone 5S. It never worked on my iphone 7 plus or 8 plus. Yes, magic tap works, but using the side button to end calls would be a lot more convenient most of the time. They shouldn't claim it's a feature if it doesn't work; based on what I'm reading here, it's not even working if VO is taken out of the equation, so that makes it extra weird. Hopefully the feature will be fixed eventually.

By Brian on Monday, November 18, 2024 - 20:11

Let us hope that Apple never removes the side button from iPhone devices. I seriously dread the day when everything is a touch sensor. 🫤

By Earle on Monday, November 18, 2024 - 20:11

As I said earlier in this thread, it was working for me. I'm using an iPhone 16 Pro Max. With 18.2 beta 2, I was able to hang up a call using the side button. After updating to beta 3 yesterday, I can no longer hang up with the side button. I'm not blaming the beta. I may have inadvertently changed something. All I know is it no longer works.

By Patrick Murphy on Monday, November 18, 2024 - 20:11

hi earle,

i have an iphone 11, so i dont update to beta versions just in case something goes really wrong.
if it is something in the beta versions, maybe they will fix it before actually releasing 18.2, at which point i will be updating.
i only update when the actual release comes out, as i am not too fond of beta versions.
