1Password recently announced that users need to download a new 1Password app. The current version is very accessible. Anyone have experience wit the new app? Accessible?
It's mostly accessible from my experience, but some way short of the previous version.
For example, when viewing details of a saved password, login, etc. VoiceOver no longer reads the username, web address, password, and so on, even though they are visually displayed. There are also many phantom UI elements which VoiceOver finds when navigating some screen - all you get is a tone to indicate that VoiceOver focus has landed on something, but a double tap does nothing. My guess is that these are decorative elements, but who knows.
Oh yes, and when you go to customise what sections are displayed on the main screen, VoiceOver doesn't announce the current selection status of sections. There's also far less available through the VoiceOver rotor than I remember being the case.
There's likely more niggles that I have forgotten.
I'm beginning to think that iCloud keychain is looking increasingly attractive. Hopefully next year Apple will bring its features more inline with those of 1Password, and I can make the jump.
It is less accessible than version 7 both on Mac and iOS. I already reported the problems to them, and hope that they repair 1P before my subscription expire in a few months. Already activated Keychain to test it. I am a 1Password user since many years ago, and this is the worst version upgrade they have done in regards to accessibility.
This new version has been written in Electron according to various sources on Twitter.
I looked at 1Password but when I saw they were going the subscription way or renting of software way, I said nope, I'm gonna use iCloud Keychain. I've done that and not looked back. Personally I hate renting apps.
I am sticking with iCloud Keychain and edge. yes, Microsoft Edge has a keychain as well.
In this case you're also paying for 1Password to sync and store your passwords in the cloud, in that sense it's not much different than other services like Dropbox or iCloud Plus. I understand your point because they removed the option to sync to your own cloud service, but I'm fine with their current model personally.
This is very disappointing to hear. I still have 1Password version 7 on my phone. Will it keep working or are they going to kill it somehow? Version 8 seems to be a separate download.
If I do have to leave 1Password behind, is there a way to easily export and migrate to another service? I don’t see an option.
I may move to KeyChain, but the problem is that, as far as I know at least, it is not cross platform. Also, when you go into the Passwords section in Settings, there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to see and copy passwords from there. You have to select to Edit. Again this is a pain if you just want to grab a password to type in on another device for example.
Hello,
1password is aware of the accessibility issues and they are working on them. I saw this in a twitter thread where the person tweeted them because of the issues. 1password responded to the tweet saying there developers were working on the issues.
I'm not sure how well this works or how accessible it is, but there is an iCloud Passwords browser extension available in the Chrome WebStore. This should work on Google Chrome, as well as other Chromium-based browsers like Microsoft Edge and Brave.
Also, to copy a password in iCloud Keychain, you can triple-tap (or one-finger double-tap and hold) on a password in Settings and select "Copy password" from the context menu. This will not reveal the password, but will copy it to the clipboard.
I've been a happy 1password user for years, but a few months ago, I decided to play with Bitwarden, and I really like it a lot. Bitwarden is open source. The free plan offers most of the features of the paid 1Password plan, and the applications/extensions are extremely accessible across iOS, Windows and Android.
The only slightly annoying thing is that if you need to log into the Bitwarden web portal for any reason, you'll run into HCaptcha, so have your accessibility cookie ready. However, once you've initially logged into the Bitwarden apps and extensions, there's really very little need to ever log into the web portal after that.
As many have already expressed, there are a number of critical accessibility issues with the iOS and iPad OS versions of 1Password, 8. Specifically, sensitive data such as passwords, usernames, and credit card numbers cannot be read with VoiceOver even if toggled to visible. IN addition, there are numerous elements which seem to have no accessible name, VoiceOver just reads nothing if you swipe to these. Anyway, I have been a long-time user of 1Password, I love the product, I love the company, and I love that they've been pretty responsive to accessibility issues in the past. I tweeted at them yesterday. The 1Password team indicated that they are aware of the issues and are working on them, but as we are at version 8.9.3 as I write this, I'm beginning to lose some hope.
Currently, both 1Password 7 and 1Password 8 are available in the app store and for the moment, the vaults seem to be backward compatible. As such, if you upgraded and wish you hadn't, you can roll back to 1Password 7. IN fact, you can even have both versions on your device at the same time. There is, however one caveat and for me, it's a big one. I asked the question: will 1Password 7 continue to work on iOS16? Their response:
"@SteveOfMaine In terms of 1Password 7 support on iOS, we're not actively working on it anymore. It looks like it's supported on iOS 16 from our testing, but if something does break it's unlikely that there'd be an update to it."

Much though it pains me to do so, I'm starting to look at alternatives. I'm glad 1Password 7 "looks like it's supported on iOS16" but personally, I'm not willing to take the chance that an Apple update breaks something with 1Password 7, unless 1Password makes a commitment to supporting (and updating) 1Password 7 until the accessibility fixes are truly implemented in 1Password 8.
I can tell you that 1password 8 leaves a lot to be desired for windows users as well. All screen readers are having accessibility problems. I do know from first hand discussion that Vispero is aware of it and are or soon will be working with 1password to try and resolve the problems.
1password has always been good about fixing accessibility problems in the past so I'm still hoping that will be the case this time. It always disturbs me when companies who have a good accessibility track record can move to a new version and break so much of it seemingly without regard to the accessibility they built into previous versions. It doesn't make sense!!!
Most of the issues with the initial release of version 8 appear to have been resolved. The user experience still isn't as slick and complete as it was with version 7 (less support of the VoiceOver rotor is perhaps my main gripe), but it' seems fully usable from my use.

The person who tweeted was probably me
Hi,
The person who tweeted about the accessibility of version 8, was probably me.
What was the username of the account the tweet was posted by?
1Password is very good at accessibility!!!
1Password is very good at fixing issues. Lets give them time. I'm sure it will get fixed!!
Bitwarden is a very good alternative.

Very sad, but intend on switching given recent Twitter thread.

1PW working on it
I did remember seeing a Twitter thread saying they were working on it. I found it.
