Wordle is a popular daily word game being enjoyed by millions and shared widely on social media. While not originally accessible, in this podcast, Dave Nason demonstrates how the game is made accessible through a web extension or bookmarklet, and the simple steps to do it.

Nice podcast
Hi. Just wanted to say you did a good job on the podcast. I play on my Mac as I wasn't keen on the interface on Safari. Now if other games like this clone are accessible, I'd love to know. After i'm done, I wish there was another one. :)
Thanks
Thanks Siobhan āŗļø Yes it is addictive!
The one thing that's bugging me which I can't figure out is when the same letter appears more than once in the word, or when I type a guess with two instances of the same letter. For example, if I type the word "Apple" as my guess, and it says on the keyboard that the letter "p" is correct, how do I know if it's the one in position 2 or 3 which is correct? On iPhone with VoiceOver at least, it doesn't seem to display this to me.
How to guess a second time?
I am so glad someone did a podcast on Wordle. I've been trying to figure out how to use the bookmarklet and finally figured it out after listening. However, I was wondering what you need to do to make a second guess after finding out what letters are actually in the first guess? I know you can guess six times. Thanks for any help on this.
Hhow do you know what letters are in the guess?
Hello, How do we know which letters in the word are correct, and which are incorrect?
According to the directions, visually, they change color. Can voiceover report if something is a different color?
You have to go by memory
If you hear, present, it means the letter is in the word somewhere. If you hear, correct, it's in the right spot. This is why I use my mac, it's a little easier to play than on the phone. You're right Dave, there should be a way to know there might be another instance of the letter. Otherwise, like today, you can use something you already used forcing you to mess up. I did win though. :)
Tried to follow for iOS
I tried to follow the directions for the playability for iOS but it's not working on my end. So I will be playing it with the Google Chrome extension for my windows 11 pc. It is very addicting thatās for sure! Reminds me of lingo! Do you know the TV show? Anyway thank you for posting this podcast sounded pretty good.
Yeah, I remember that show
Hi,
Yeah, I remember that show!
It was great while it lasted.
Relating back to Wordle, I heard from someone, that VoiceOver should tell you where the letters are in the word, and whether or not they are correct. At least on my end, this is not happening. Is there anything I need to do, to fix this?
Hi, Thanks for this podcastā¦
Hi, Thanks for this podcast. I have been playing and loving Wordel for about a week using the Krome extention on my Windows computer as the instructions for installation were less involved. Today when I went to play Wordle, it was no longer accessible with a screen reader. Is anyone else experiencing issues playing Wordele? Such a fun game I hope this issue is resolved soon.
Re: Hi, thanks for this Podcast
Hi,
I think it's because wordle was taken over by nytimes, so the code that was originally built won't work due to it migrating to a new website.
I really hope a solution is found soon. It was so great to have equal access to something just like everyone else.
ordle Is Still Working For Me
Wordle is still working for me. I'm using the bookmarklet so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
confused about playing
I followed the instructions for iOS and after the first guess, no matter what I type, it keeps saying "not in word list". I've no idea what I'm doing wrong.
Bookmarklet still works
Yep, playing on my iPhone the bookmarklet is still working fine after the move to the New York Times website. I havenāt used the browser extension.
Jenna, usually that phrase means you attempted to enter a word which is not a real five letter word in the English language. It might also happen if youāve already completed a game that day and cannot play another game, or some other error. Try refreshing the page or just coming back tomorrow. Otherwise Iām not sure tbh.
Dave
FYI, the Chrome extension is updated and now working again.
I noticed a couple days ago that Wordle moved to another URL and that made the Chrome extension not work anymore. The Chrome extension has been updated and Wordle now works with the Chrome extension again. Thanks to the developer for updating the extension.
Wordle Website
Here is the website:
https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html
I have the extension updated
Hi. I didn't check on the update, now I played today's game. I sucked. Lol. However i was hoping to play the past ones, the ones I missed. But I don't see an accessible one and I don't want to create the account. anyone know of anything?
help with iOS
Hi all,
I've followed the instructions for adding the javascript bookmark thing to safari but when I open wordle and then the bookmark, nothing on the page seems to change and the game is not accessible. I've checked that javascript is turned on in my safari settings. Are there any other suggestions of what I might be missing or doing wrong? I'd love to play this game without sighted assistance. Thanks for any help you can give.
Same situation as Winter
Hi, I also did what it was needed to proceed on my ipad, but at the time I click on my created markbooklet nothing happens
Accessible Wordle
For people having trouble using the bookmarklet, here's a link to an accessible Wordle which works straight out of the box. No need to activate any overlays or extensions. https://www.possiblepromise.com/wordle/
Wordle help.
So i followed the instructions, and nothing. Can anybody show me personally on how to do this?
download chrome
I just added it as an extension and when done, it followed over to the NYT site. Which totally sucks. Just sayin
Re problems
Jose, what do you mean when you say nothing? Were you able to save the bookmarklet successfully?
What I do is go to the Wordle webpage, swipe around on the keyboard a couple of times, then open the bookmarklet. Wait a few seconds, then above the keyboard you will find a message saying that the extension is running. Type a word and select Enter.
Very occasionally it doesnāt work, so I leave the page, close Safari, and try again. This generally works.

Wordle on PossiblePromise website
If anyone is playing Wordle there, you may want to know that the Wordle seems to be the one from the day before. so if, like me, you like to share your results with sighted friends on Facebook, you might want to know that you are not solving the same puzzle as they are.
Accessible bookmarklet not working for me today at all
I cannot get the accessible bookmarklet to work for me, on either Safari or Chrome on my iPhone. It will not load. Iāve refreshed the page and even gone as far as to redo it with the same result. Iāve also tried it on multiple iPhones. It worked fine until yesterday. I really hope this can be fixed somehow as I have been playing this game every day since Applevis came out with their podcast on how to make Wordle accessible.
The Possible Promise website would be perfect if it actually had the current Wordle that everyone else has for that same day. Otherwise itās no good for me.
Same here
Itās not working for me today either ā¹ļø
This happened for me about a week ago too, but it was fine again the next day, so hopefully itās just a glitch š¤

Wordle Accessibility
It appears that the Times did a software update yesterday that crashed the accessibility of Wordle. My sighted wife said there were different colors and a little different Wordle look yesterday. Encourage all to email nytcrossword@nytimes.com with feedback. If anyone has a better contact, please share. My experience on my iPhone and PC is that Wordle now does not give any feedback on which letters Iāve entered (absent, correct, or present).
Wordle now accessible by default?
Is it just me, or has Wordle now added the functionality of the extension / bookmarklet into their default code? I notice that I no longer have to specifically load the bookmarklet. Or is Safari just remembering that I used the bookmarklet code so it loads it automatically since iOS 16? If the former, good on NYT for doing that.
