I heard the podcast on KoalaSan and wanted to get it, but I don't know how to create an icedcast server to put in the fields, of the app. If anyone knows how I can get info on this please let me know.
Hello.
please does anyone know where can I get more information about how much is it and how often do you have to pay?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Hello there.
To be able to stream, you would need a server so that you could stream to it via your IPhone, and others would be able to listen by connecting and listening up through your server.
You have two ways of achieving this goal, establishing a radio station, that is.
first method: run the server on your own computer, (like your personal computer, or a laptop that is running 24/7 in your basement), or run the server on a deticated computer that you bought recently for hosting, or just running it on a VPS (virtual private server).
Icecast server is free, it's like an application. you install it on your operating system, (linux, then windows preferred) you do the configuration, then your computer will serv as a radio station server.
The good thing about this method is that you won't pay for anything if it's your own computer, you can ajust the server the way that you like. of course you have to pay for electricity or maintaining the hardwares. plus, if you want to run the server on a VPS or deticated computer, you have to pay.
The cons of this method is that everything should be done by you. including configurations, and some more twicks.
Icecast provides you a very simple web control panel which you can view the streams, listeners, and shutdown/restart the server.
Method 2: you will order an icecast hosting service.
These hosting services will run the server for you on their own computers, and will give you a very advanced and (also easy) controlPanel.
They will also give you a 10+ gigabite music storage, so beside live streaming, you could upload musics and it would start auto DJ for you if you need to.
(not to mention that you can also have automatic music play with your own computer or iPhone with applications like winAmp or djay for iPhone)
They'll charge you monthly, depending on the package that you order.
There are many icecast hosting out there, i'll Suggest you do some google searches about "Icecast Hosting"
some of the known ones are
www.shoutcheap.com/icecast
www.icecastdirect.com
http://servers.internet-radio.com/icecast/
www.reliastream.com
www.mixstream.net
and of course, if you want to run the server yourself to just test things out, go to
www.icecast.org
and get the icecast server for free, and get it setup.
Once again, i recommend googling about icecast, internet radio streaming.
By the way, do not get mix shoutcast with icecast. They are both free streaming servers. and they both are being used with popilur internet radios.
I personally like shoutcast better since it's more friendlyer and there are more hosting services offering shoutcast hosting. And i don't have any idea why This iPhone application only supports icecast streaming.
hope i could help.

Hello,
I'm very frustrated and am sorry for giving you such a broken and short explaination because apperrently Applevis will mark everything above 4 lines as a spam and will delete it.
1: get ice cast server and run it on your own computer
www.icecast.org
2: order an icecast hosting service. just google "icecast hosting service" and you'll figure it out what it is.
Once again i am extremely depressed and frustrated since i put something about 40 minutes to explain how to make a radio station, and ... well they're all gone.
Your comment was not marked as spam. I saw it twice, the longer and the shorter explanation. anyways I am thinking myself of going with relustream. They seem quite good. Now I hope I can use the cent ova control panel 2, as you can make custom mount points that will stay. No on the fly stuff, This would be good for me as I'm thinking of renting on the fly mount points for people who want to stream live remotes for a day or 2, or up to a week if need be.
I personally love ice cast as you can have multiple mount points that will not conflict with each other. For example, If I had a live remote for a convention that mount point might be called convention, someone else has a live remote that day for a convention in florida that mount point might be called cfl and so on and so on. Each of us would get our own mount point. the only thing you have to be careful of os total bandwidth used. If all of us are streaming at 128kbps and we go over our bandwidth the main owner of the server sill get charged so be very careful of that. HOpe that explains a bit more about ice cast. and what you can do with it. Have fun.
oh my~
oh well I think admins were to the rescue!
because each time i tried submitting my comment it said that it's a spam and it wouldn't post.
Anyway, Thanks to whomever fixxed it and actually showed the comment.
Hi there,
Thanks for your brilliant detailed explanation of the icecast servers.
I know a lot about broadcasting having done it myself on the net before, but now that I've got a modern computer with approx eight gigs of ram, I might consider hoasting my own server; I'd forgotten about that option TBH
You will also need the bandwidth to do this with not just ram. and I have to warn you trying to do this on the mac is almost impossible as you have to install a lot of dependencies. I tried and gave up rather quickly when my head started to ache. lol!
