So many text recognition apps, which is awesome. From reading other posts in this site, I know that none of these apps is indisputably superior., So which ones do you use, and in what situations do they work best?
I use Seeing AI, and KNFB reader. I use seing ai for quick things, whereas I use knfb reader for longer documents. Also you can save text in knfb reader.
I use voice dream scanner most of the time, though normally I only scan food packages or read my mail.
I think that invision and supersense Work well, and seeing AI is a decent free option.
I can’t really get my head around OneStep Reader though. It’s extremely expensive and a totally blind person I can’t really make sense of the layout.
When I flick through the document it reads word by word but how do you get it to read the document you have just scanned in a meaningful way?
Hi! If you have purchased KNFB Reader in the past, you don't have to pay for OneStep Reader, even if you don't have the oldKNFB Reader installed: that was the case for me. As for reading the document you've scanned with OneStep Reader, there is a Play button which will read the document, and I would guess the Say All VoiceOver gesture will also work, although I have only done a quick test with OneStep Reader and didn't think of trying the two-finger swipe down.
If you are looking for a free version of KNFB Reader that is slightly stripped down, the lite version of the KNFB Reader is actually a part of the NFB Newnsline app. You must be eligible for the free service and sign up. NFB Newsline gives one access to hundreds of national and international magazines as well as local periodicals as well at the KNFB lite version.
As we are discussing these apps, I picked up Envision when it was on sale, but haven't used it. I use Voice Dream Scanner, and should probably use it more. I'm surious what SuperSense offers that these apps, particuarly Envision, do not.
I only use Seeing AI for now, since it is free. But that might change at some point, as I'm hopefully getting some Apple gift cards activated tomorrow. Based on my somewhat limited experience with and knowledge of photos this app works great. It is also fully accessible with VoiceOver. Kudos to Microsoft for that. I also briefly used KNFB Reader Basic as part of their Newsline app, but didn't find it to be that great.
I was really pleased with Seeing ai until recently When, for some reason, it was finding it hard to recognise text on food packaging and in last months news letter you recommended Supersense and it’s great although I’m not sure how to use it for recognising text in a photo, FB, Instagram etc and I can’t be bothered messing around so use seeing ai for this. For me, I don’t see the need to pay for an app as I only have basic needs
Thanks to supersense I was able to rid my phone of the once was good but now terrible pathetic seeingAI app. Right now I have the anual subscription. and I think it has a very good barcode reader. It doesn't tell me 90 percent of the time that it can't recognize an item like seeingAI did. Voice stream scanner is a good one as well. Note when using the supersense and voice stream scanner app I don't need to hold my phone under a light like I did with seeingAI. So as you can see any of these apps that you pay for are much better especially when it comes to detection, and the free apps, well as they say you get what you pay for.
@Graham Page does VoiceDream scanner read food packages well? I've had trouble with those using KNFB and Seeing AI? What do you use SuperSense and Envision for?
@Troy yes I am definitely thinking of getting a paid app. Is there difference in functionality between VoiceDream and SuperSense? Or does one of them scan certain items better than the other?
Don’t know about the others but Voice Dream Scanner and Reader do everything I want and need. No reason for me to look further. I can figure out vitamin labels and mail. The features are easy to use.
I find that supersense is really good for bar codes, and very good for handwriting or text on random surfaces. I like the multipage document mode as well. So I would say that both supersense and voice dream are very good, but I tend to pull out supersense because the scanning and recognition is slightly quicker, plus the handwriting and object recognition can be extremely helpful.
So I downloaded Supersense last night after seeing this topic in the forum and I’m excited to see what it can do. Oddly enough, I have not been a big fan of Seeing AI but within the last couple of weeks it is red better than almost anything else for some strange reason. I just put a bag of pinto beans down to see if one step would read it, and it could not. I then used the document setting for seeing AI and it read it really well. I was amazed! Not ready to count seeing AI out just yet.

mostly Seeing AI
I mostly use Seeing AI though I use Envision for bar codes.
Advantages of SuperSense over Envision

Curious which app deals with difficult situations better
I’m thinking of things that are not easy to capture like expiration dates, which I always need to know but could never find with Seeing AI
Also I realize this is unlikely, but has anyone ever tried using one of these to find a sign outdoors?
