I am trying to set the margins smaller to print closer to the edge of the paper, likewise with the header and footer. I would also like to set this as the default. II have enabled the ruler but haven't been able to acomplish the above. Anyone able to offer any pointers in the right direction, thanks Ron.

You can’t adjust the margins of a TextEdit document when you print it.

However, you can do two things:

1. Adjust the page settings, go to "File > Page Setup"

2. Copy the ruler

After you set the text indents and alignment, you can apply the same settings to another document by copying the ruler.
In the TextEdit app on your Mac, open the document with the settings you want to copy, then choose "Format > Text > Copy Ruler".
Create or open another document in which you want the same settings.
Choose "Format > Text > Paste Ruler".

Thanks Dog, that explains why I could not figure out how to do it. Many thanks for your advice. However the indent markers no longer seem to be available «available. Have I somehow switched them off?, Ron.
