How to format a message in Apple Mail. Can anyone help please?

Can anyone tell me how to format a message in the mail app? I have tried highliting the text of the message them stopping interaction and moving up to the format , area, , changing the font size valu but it snaps straight back. Perhaps the selected text becomes deselected when stopping interaction ?
If anyone has any idea's I would be grateful to hear them. Thanks Ron.

As an alternative to the format button in the toolbar, you can select the text you want to format and choose Format > show fonts (or press Command-T) to bring up the standard macOS text formatting window. Here, you should be able to change the font, size, and typeface of the selected text, among other options.
