BC4000 - Civilization Model

Category

Description of App

The BC4000 APP is a turn-based strategy game. The game has an online mode, a hot seat mode and a single player mode. You take on the role of the ruler of a civilization, attempt to build an empire in competition with other civilizations. The game begins in 4000 BC, before the Bronze Age, and can last through to AD 2100 with Space Age.

Along with the larger tasks of exploration, warfare and diplomacy, you have to make decisions about where to build new cities, which improvements or units to build in each city, when to expand your empire by new settlers, and how to transform the land surrounding the cities for maximum benefit. From time to time your cities may be harassed by units from other nations or barbarians. You should protect borders and maintain zones of control.

You can gain a large advantage if your civilization is the first to learn a particular technology and put it to use in a military or other context. Since only one technology may be researched at any given time, the order in which technologies are chosen makes a considerable difference in the outcome of the game and generally reflects your preferred style of gameplay. Please carefully consider about forms of government, tax rates and research priorities.

You can also build Wonders of the World after obtaining the prerequisite knowledge. These wonders are important achievements of society, science, culture and defense, ranging from the Pyramids and the Great Wall in the Ancient age, to Copernicus' Observatory and Magellan's Expedition in the middle period, up to the Apollo program in the modern era. Each wonder can only be built once in the world, and requires a lot of resources to build, far more than most other city buildings or units. Wonders provide unique benefits to the controlling civilization. For example, Magellan's Expedition increases the movement rate of naval units.

The game can be won by conquering all other civilizations or by winning the space race by reaching the star system of Alpha Centauri.

The strategy logic and user interactive concept are inspired by the original Sid Meier's Civilization. Most graphics, music, map and text materials come from public domain licensed by Creative Commons License or General Public License.

I had no idea that accessibility was only implemented a few days ago. My humble apologies. I’m glad he still working on it, that’s great. Another idea I have would be if we could use the custom actions instead of tapping on the menu. So for example, if you wanted to order your settlers to build a city you could navigate to the cities and then swipe up until you see a build city and then double tap or something.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I like that idea but the voiceover actions would have to be implemented for each button, I think. I dunno if that would be feasible in the end.

In new history mode, selecting the Spanish when playing the Spanish civil war 1936 will also crash the game. Just reporting in case.

Try disabling VO, selecting Spanish and enabling VO again when the game has started.

I've been talking with the developer through email the last few days. He is looking at adding some more time periods such as the Amarican civil war.
I am excited about this.

Hey, I am having trouble maximizing food. My cities are suffering famine because of this. How do I fix this?

By Firefly on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

The best way I have found to maximize food, is to make sure that you have active workers in a city, that build irrigation often! While in the city. When you start to get into the industry., Or the industrial part of the game, you can do farming, and that I haven’t gotten that far yet I spent a lot of time reading the encyclopedia last night.

When building a freight, The app will crash when completing the last term before it is ready to use.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

Using the VoiceOver off and on suggestion, I discovered the following. Any order to the freight will crash the app. Also, the ordering buttons for the freight aren't properly labelled. I hope the developer is reading this, or someone will report it to him.

1. Excuse me for the inconvenience by introduced a crash voice label when a unit can be loaded into a ship in a city. Version 1.2.9 fixed this issue.

2. There are some other voice-over enhancements in the version 1.2.9 too:
(a) Do not automatically scroll world map center to voiceover focused element when player touch screen
(b) Read out  "Infrastructure: Irrigation/Road/etc" if it exists when a VoiceOver player taps on a tile in the city map
(c) Read out "Mini Tribe Village" if it exists when a voiceover player taps on a tile in the world map
(d) Read out "location coordinate" of each city after tap go to city
(e) Update current unit information in footer to more sense text
(f) Make events view after turn done modal, no overlay with world map anymore
(g) Show respond information after tap "Maximize Food"
(h) Add "Maximize Entertainers/Scientists/Taxmen" buttons to adjust specialist roles easier

3. Special thanks to Panagiotis Mourouzis, Michael Gindele and Jesse for Great feedbacks and help to test beta versions.

I will vote to have your app as part of the golden apples pics as well.

I was finally able to launch a spaceship to alpha Centauri. By that point, you can choose to end the game or just continue to toy around with your technology. Great stuff. Not sure if I'll be able to do it when other nations is taking part LOL.

By cyco on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

The developer is going to add accessibility for the blind to his other games. He is currently working on city nanager to be accessible.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

Activating caravan from the city menu won't stop it from auto exploring. Thus, it is hard to find your caravan.

How long did it take you to launch your ship? I"m not sure what the time commitment to this game is. I realize you can come back to the game and don't have to do everything in a single sitting but this is different then the idle games I normally play.

By Panais on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

V1.3 is probably coming out soon.
Points of interest menu will be added in which all previously discovered cities will be listed. This will be very helpful when planning offensive campaigns. In this regard, the offset function which is also upcoming, will be of great help as well by indicating The controlling city of any individual tile and the distance to it.
Furthermore by tapping on a worker or an engineer, the game will be reading out the action that this unit is performing. For example irrigation or mining.
Also in the city interface, a potential enemies button will be added, which will list all incoming units and their coordinates, that are not controlled by the player and that are within a certain radius from the selected city. This info will also appear in the defense overview for all cities. So no more lightning on a clear day.
Finally on the city map which is used to control the citizens of the city, the game will be reading the tile upgrades, Not just the terrain.
There are also some other changes and fixes but those listed are the big ones.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This developer is not only awesome but he is also a genius at his craft.
Big thanks!

By Firefly on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

This is going to be so awesome! As I am having difficulty knowing what hosta units are out there until they are right on top of me!

Even when playing alone, there's so much to do and discover, like for example what happens when you transform a piece of grassland and change it to your liking. Here is a tip. Mining a piece of grassland will turn it into a forest. Irrigate the forest and it becomes a plane. When you have fusion power, you can turn even the most sucky areas into wonders. Careful with mining though. Mining on a plane will restore it to a grassland and its previous state. Some areas can be mined more than once, such as glaciers which will allow you to at least get some shield from it, unless you have fusion power. Best iOS text game ever. Can't put it down.

By Panais on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I had noticed that some planes turne into grasslands etc. but I hadn’t figured it out yet. So since grasslands give more food than planes, probably the best strategy is to mine the plains and then irrigate the grasslands. Then cities will grow larger than 30. This is the largest I’ve gone so far.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

In reply to by Panais

I find planes to be much more beneficial. A well worked plane can provide two food, one shield and one trade. A glacier with a mine and road will get you three shields I believe. While grasslands are good on food, they are not very good on trade and shields. I prefer to keep that balance. Also, I personally like to Control one worker, while keeping the other on auto mode. The worker controlled by me is used to transform tiles, while the one on auto mode will clean up mess such as pollution and fallout from nuclear accidents. Workers on auto mode aren't very keen on mining and irrigation, although they will occasionally do it when absolutely necessary. On the other hand, I find them to be excellent at cleaning up mess.

By Panais on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

In reply to by DMNagel

Actually I must admit I am obsessed with food. It does me something when cities grow every 3 turns but all out grassland would be a disaster now that I think about it.
I haven’t monitor workers closely on auto mode. However I often find them in the middle of nowhere. Do you know what they are doing? I think they are building roads but I’m not sure.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

In reply to by Panais

For the most part, they will just stand there doing nothing, waiting for pollution or fallout to drop somewhere. They are good at cleaning that kind of mess. They will occasionally do some mining or irrigation, maybe even build a road or two, but I'm not 100% sure. It is obviously best to take control of at least one so you can transform the area exactly to your liking. The same goes for transport and sea vessels. On auto mode, they will just sit around and wait for ocean pollution to drop somewhere. I am yet to do some ocean exploring.

The update is out, and it is really awesome! I now have a diplomat on the way to a foreign city, to see what they can do about swinging things in my favor. I also like the more control you have over what actions each unit is doing!

By Erdem on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I really liked the game but I couldn’t move after edge of the screen by single finger molements.I need to move the screen with three finger movements andd that loses the focus. it makes the game difficult andd enoying for me. any suggestions?

By Erdem on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

As far as I understandd from my experience different units can go to a spesific distance in each turn. for example I used my explorer andd findd a very nice place to build my first city but I can not be sure if my settilers reach there. also do we lose build city option for that turn when we move our settler or I can not find the option;

Just move your setler setler to the place you want to build the city. You will not hear from them until they reach the destination. Once they reach the destination, the build city command will be among the options.

I haven't thught that way. what about knowing when will they arrive?

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

In reply to by Erdem

They will start asking for orders again. That's how you know they've got to the location. While they travel, you won't be able to command them. Also, when you build a city, you will lose the setler and will need to build a new one.

By Erdem on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

In reply to by DMNagel

I got that part. my question is more about strategy. for example I have a good place for a city but I'm not sure if it will take one turn or two which will influence my action? is there any way how long that journey will take or I just build in somewhere close so that I don't lose a lot of turns? I'm really sorry that this conversation took so much place in the forum

It all depends on many things. How far are you from the location, what kind of road are you travelling on and how many move points do your character have? All those factors must be taken into consideration when travelling. When it's a grassland without a road, or a desert area, it will drain your character and make him tired much faster, so they will travel much longer. When it's an easy road like a plane, it will allow them to travel faster. There is really so much strategy to consider in this game and I don't even remember all. Many things must be learned through trial and error.

Manually update the app if you want it faster.

By Erdem on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

Ican see my current andd future research goals but I can't change current research. any ideas

By Firefly on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I just updated the app my question is, what has changed in this updated version? I don’t see any type of a Changelog call maybe I’m not looking for the right place.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I may be wrong, but I believe the music of the game changes depending on the nation that you choose. So far, I like playing as the Dutch. Just wow.

By Tristo on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

I've tried this game. Firstly, I agree with comments above that it needs a better tutorial. Also which Touraine is best for building a city? Also I think that locating units, and moving units around could be made a bit easier.

By DMNagel on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 18:25

Currently, there are three ways to move a unit which you can choose from. First is the north, east, south, west and the rest of the directional buttons. Secondly, you can select and specify the exact location for it to move to, or if you move from city to city, there is even a menu which specifies what city you want to go to. You will need to come up with a fourth and better idea on how to move units, as I cannot think of any other way. One thing I do agree with is that, there need to be a way to locate units that doesn't belong to a city. Currently, we have no way of locating them. Perhaps from within the city menu, there can be an option next to the tasking units and present units, like unknown units or something, that will allow us to activate and control those units that are not supported by a city. We will be at a huge disadvantage if we cannot locate and control those units, especially when they are auto exploring.

As far as game tutorials go, the encyclopedia has a lot of good information. You can access it when you are in a game at any time are you going to the top of the screen and swiping right. As far as easier ways to move around the map, it seems to be pretty easy to do that right now, I’m not sure what exactly can be improved about that.
