Bugs in OmegaT

macOS and Mac Apps

Hello,
Is anyone using OmegaT? It is a CAT tool for translators which, to me, seems mostly accessible, but I have some problems, which also occur in other apps:
1. When creating a project, there are some dialog boxes with popup groups. Because there are many items in a popup group, I think, when navigating through it, the focus returns to the first option in the field and I cannot choose another option. I need to stop interracting with the popup group and then return to it in order to select another option.
2. This bug is very strange and I cannot explain it: whenever I am in class (online or offline) and I create a project, the text from the current segment which I am editing works without any problem, but when I return to the project for the second time and navigate with the arrow keys, VoiceOver won't announce the text and as I'm editing, the changes won't appear on my Braille display. I must first move the cursor from that spot and return to it again to view what I've written. And I also tried creating a new project when not being in class, but the editable text didn't appear as editable. And it's not because of the Wi-Fi network. I used multiple networks and the behaviour was the same.

So, I'm wondering if there are any work-arounds for this. It's not impossible to use the software, but it takes a lot of time to edit a segment.
Thank you.
Regards,

Alexandra

Alexandra,

I'm sorry that you're running into this problem. I am the person behind the Twitter account for OmegaT where I saw this forum message referred to, and also a "non programer" member of the OmegaT team.

We have never used OmegaT with VoiceOver but in the past I have heard that Linux based screen readers did not work well with OmegaT. Maybe VoiceOver is a bit better but from your comment it seems that there still are important issue left.

Since I am not familiar with VoiceOver, I'd like you to run me through what you're doing and how you're doing it. If you have a good introduction to VoiceOver somewhere, please let me know. I'm based in Japan so there's going to be a delay in my replies. Apologies for that.

Also, understand that OmegaT is not a 100% native Mac application. It is written in Java, and the graphic interface comes from there, plus, the way we display the translatable parts is quite complex so, yes, there are probably tricky things in the user interface that confuse VoiceOver.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. As I said, it's usable, but it definitely needs some improvements. Tomorrow I will try to explain what happens when creating a new project and what problems I encounter in it. Everything I know about VoiceOver can be found on this amazing website, so I don't have other resources. But I will describe what each shortcut key means.

Thank you again for taking interest in my situation. I am aware that it’s difficult to solve some problems, so you need not worry about this. I am very grateful and I hope you will be able to bring some improvements, so that it could be much easier to use.

Ok. Tomorrow I will describe the process in detail.
Regards,
Alexandra

Hello,

I will try to describe in detail what I'm doing in OmegaT in order to clarify what bugs I encounter. I will also try to give you a detailed account on how the interface looks like for a VoiceOver user.

Firstly, I open OmegaT. I will paste what VoiceOver says from the beginning of the window to the end (I don't know the exact position of the elements). I use control + option + left and right arrow to move between elements:

close button
minimise button
full screen button
OmegaT 4.3.2
Instant Start
Minimize button
Maximize button
(then, there comes the edit box with the help file)
Fuzzy Matches
Actions & Settings button
Minimize button
Undock button
Maximize button
Displays the translation memories segments that match the source segment. Matches can be found in your current translation or in the TMX files that you have put in the /tm/ folder. Insertion at beginning of text. text/plain edit text
Glossary
Actions & Settings button
Minimize button
Undock button
Maximize button
Displays the glossary entries found in the glossary files located in the /glossary/ folder if they are present in the source segment. You can create glossary entries with Create Glossary Entry in the Edit menu. Entries from the writeable glossary are in bold. Insertion at beginning of text. text/plain edit text
Dictionary
Machine Translation
Multiple Translations
Notes
Comments
Segment Properties
text
LCK | INS
--/-- (--/--, --)
--/--

Now, I will return to a project I previously created to demonstrate the bug with the editable segment which does not seem editable and can only be handled with my Braille display by placing the cursor on the word, deleting it and writing another word in the target language in that particular spot: I go to Project menu, choose Open recent project and then Assignment 1, which is the name of that project. Let me show you what I get:

close button
minimise button
full screen button
Project Files (1)
empty table
Move First button
Move Up button
Move Down button
Move Last button
empty table
You can find detailed statistic information in the file:.............. (here are some details about the file)
Copy Files to Source Folder... button
Download MediaWiki Page... button
Close button

I press the close button and now the actual project appears, with its interface which is almost similar to that presented before. But let me focus on the first edit field, where all the segments are placed and only one can be edited. In order to reach it, I need to interract with the edit field by pressing Control+Option+Shift+Down arrow. To stop interracting I press the same keystroke, but with up arrow. At first, when I created the project and did this, I was then able to navigate in the editable text with my arrow keys, and VoiceOver announced the characters, words and lines to me, as in a regular edit field. But now, when I try to move between the characters with the arrow keys, I can move, but VoiceOver won't announce what I do. I cannot see the cursor on my Braille display as well. But when I place the cursor with the router keys of my Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation Braille Display, I find it on the desired word and can delete the word with option+backspace or FN+option+backspace when deleting forward. So, I hope you got the idea of what I mean. This is the most annoying bug of all.

And now let me create a new project to show you the problematic dialog boxes: I open the project menu, I go to New or simply press command shift N, and I get this:

close button
minimise dimmed button
zoom button
Create a New Project
Save As:
Save As: edit text (Here, I'll enter Test
combo box (when interracting with it, I get: pop up button). I press on it and get: system dialogue In list 1 item selected. Projects Projects Projects. This is the folder where I'll save it, so I leave it alone. Else, I would have to drop the folder on the empty table which follows, because I cannot choose many folders in that popup group)
empty table
File Format:
combo box (When interracting, I get: pop up button, and pressing it I get: list 1 item selected. All Files)
New Folder button
Cancel button
Save button (I press this button)

Now I get:

edit text Insertion at beginning of text. Please select the language of your source files and the target language you would like to translate to. (etc. etc.)
Source Files Language:
Source Language Tokenizer:
combo box (Here comes the difficulty: I have to interract, I find EN-GB in the edit field, I press on the pop up button, or sometimes only to press down arrow, and I get AA - Afar. The problem is that, when I interract with it for the first time, it tends to go to AA - Afar every time I press control+option+right arrow to move forward. I must interract again, find EN-GB and stop interracting)
combo box (Now the tokenizer: it will always go back to default tokenizer when I try to go forward)
Translated Files Language:
Target Language Tokenizer:
combo box (I have to do the same with those two for the target language)
combo box
Enable Sentence-level Segmenting ticked checkbox
Segmentation... button
Auto-propagation of Translations ticked checkbox
File Filters... button
Remove Tags unticked checkbox
Repository Mapping... button
External Post-processing Command (Disabled):
External Search... button
<html>Per-project external commands are disabled and will not be executed. Enable them in <b>Preferences > Saving and Output...</b>.</html> edit text
Source Files Folder:
Exclusions... button
Browse button
(and it shows me the path of the folder. The same happens with the other folders presented below, which i'll skip here)

I stop interracting with the entire scroll area where I was placed when opening this window, and I find the OK and Cancel buttons. I press on OK and it shows me that there are no project files, the interface being that presented above after opening the Assignment 1 project. I press Copy Files to Source Folder... button and I get an interface similar to the one presented above with combo boxes, but I cannot choose the file from those folders, so I must drag and drop the file on the empty table. I'll choose an .odt file, which I will locate, place under the mouse cursor (which is control+option+command+F5), press control+option+command+shift+space to mark it for drag and drop (you will hear mouse down on...) and then move to the OmegaT app with command+tab and press again control+option+command+shift+space (you will hear mouse up on ...) and if it is dropped, you will be able to press Choose button. You will get the same window as before, with the project files, and then you will have to press close. As before, with the project entitled Assignment 1, when translating, I'm not able to move between characters with the arrow keys. That's very strange. I cannot explain this... And when I work with my professor and peers, I am always able to edit it normally, regardless of the WiFI network or other settings.

I hope there is a setting which I can modify and be able to edit the text in the regular way. It is frustrating when you saw that an app worked well and, after you close it and restart your computer, behaves strangely.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this long, but hopefully clear explanation. Maybe a solution could be found so that VoiceOver would behave better in this software, because I think the bug with the segments mainly depends on it. I don't have such a big problem with the pop up buttons, they don't slow my work down very much, but translating seems like ages because of the bug with the editing.
I look forward to see if you understood everything correctly.
Regards,

Alexandra
