Anyone else have an overly sensitive touch screen on iPhone 13 models?

Good morning. I've had my iPhone 13 pro for a few days now, and am slowly but surely beginning to make friends with it. I have a major problem, though. There are numerous occasions when I'm simply trying to swipe through items or perform a single finger double tap to select something, and my phone interprets it as the magic tap and just randomly starts playing music. If it was an occasional thing, I'd be OK with it, but it seems to happen more often than not. If I'm here at home by myself, it's annoying but not a huge deal. If I'm out and about, though, it is very embarrassing and disruptive. It reminds me of how the screen on my 5S was overly sensitive when I first got it, but it improved with a software update. I have reported this to Apple Accessibility, and they say they're aware of the problem, but I just wanted to write in here and ask if anyone else is experiencing this. It's frustrating because I've been an iPhone user for 8 years and this issue is starting to make me feel like I'm starting back at square one.

I'm also having issues with face ID; supposedly, I have set it up correctly, but it has never once unlocked my phone. Compared to the touch screen issue, this is completely insignificant; I'm OK with just entering my passcode, but still, combined with the touch screen problems, I'm not loving the new phone quite as much as I hoped I might.

To end on a positive note, though, photo descriptions are amazing!

I thought it was just me with the sensitive screen. Putting on a Speeddots screen protector helped. As for face ID, you could always scan your face again

I heard this tip on a podcast and it sounded like it helped.

It's possible to change the "Double-tap timeout":
Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > scroll to bottom to "Double-tap timeout".

I think the person changed it from default of "025s" > "0.3s"

Thank you very much for this suggestion! I will give it a try. It certainly can't hurt at this point. I'm sure this will get fixed eventually, but for now, it's making life very difficult. LOL!

As for Face ID, I've already attempted to redo it once, but maybe I can get it redone with sighted assistance at some point. The thing is, both times I've tried it, my phone claims that it was set up successfully, so who knows what I'm doing wrong there. Will come back and let you all know if the doubletap timeout fix makes any difference.

I just set up my new iPhone 13 Mini last night. The touchscreen is fine for me; it seems much more responsive than my iPhone 8 just because the phone is faster overall but it never misinterprets my gestures. Also, FaceID has been working great for me. Setting it up was a little strange but there were good spoken directions from VoiceOver during the process and I got the scanning done in about 2 minutes. I haven't had any issues unlocking my phone, but you might want to check if the setting to track your eyes is turned on. I enabled that setting because I have control over the movement of my eyes and I don't want anyone to get into my phone using FaceID when I'm sleeping but the setting is customizable if you're having issues. Hope this helps and enjoy your new phone!

Well, I just changed the doubletap time out setting, and sadly, it didn't improve matters. I'd guess that 5 out of 10 times I try to double tap things, it interprets it as the magic tap and starts playing music. I feel very confident that Apple will fix it in software eventually, but for now, I'll just have to deal with it. Like I said, here at home, it's just frustrating, but it is embarrassing if I'm out and about or at work and my phone just starts blaring music for no reason.

I'm glad most folks do well with face ID. I have no control over eye movement so have turned off all the attention stuff. Maybe I just don't know how to hold the phone when I'm trying to unlock it? Or, maybe I should try turning on the attention stuff t to see if it helps. At this point, there's no doubt in my mind: t my face ID issues are definitely user error. There's an adaptive tech trainer who comes to my work place peridocially. She's already told me that she'll help me with face ID next time she's in town. I bought this phone on her recommendation, so feel pretty confident that she'll be able to show me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks again for all of your great suggestions. Even if they haven't helped, they are extremely appreciated.

Hey, all. I just wanted to share this in case someone ends up reading this and is experiencing the same issue. Until thing get fixed on apples end, I went into VO commands options and remapped some gestures. I changed magic tap to two finger triple tap, and it's already made a world of difference. I also made the previous magic tap another way to select items. This new mapping works for me, so I might not change it even if I find out things have been fixed.

Do you have a screen protector. That can sometimes have some extra tape left over while unwrapping, which could cause problems with face ID. I had problems with face ID for a while myself, and when I removed that little bit of tape, everything was fine.

I had a co-worker put on my screen protecter, but the face ID issue was already going on before that. I also attempted to set up face ID again, just in case, and still no luck. Pretty sure it's user error, but at this point, I'm not going to worry about it until I can meet with a tech trainer.

I have the same problem with the zoom accessibility on my new 13 pro max. When I enable zoom, the screen is way too sensitive at a point it’s barely usable. Never had this problem before and the screen is fine when using normally.

My iPhone 13 mini seems a bit sensitive as well. Sometimes focussed jumps when I have not touch the screen.

Also. Text is sometimes selected when I try to activate the rotor. Ironically, if I try to select text by spreading two fingers, it doesn't work.

I'm sure there's a way to make the screen less sensitive, as someone adjusted a setting for me when I first started using my 8+, but I don't remember where the setting was exactly. I've also had problems with text selection and face ID. Sometimes it works, and other times it simply won't.
