Hey guys. I hope everything is going well. So, I finally got my iPhone 12 on Thursday and I am absolutely adoring it. I do have a small issue though. Sometimes, when trying to unlock with face ID, the unlock sound does not play. This makes it hard to know when the phone is unlocked. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it is pretty noticeable. I then end up spending about two minutes waving the phone in front of my face knowing that it should unlock and then I accidentally press the lock button. Does any one else have this particular issue? I have another question about dictation. So, when I first got my iPhone 8 in 2018, dictation was easily able to understand what I was saying. However, about a year or two later, I began to have serious issues. It would not pick up my words correctly, even though I enunciated them clearly. I think it could have something to do with the age of the device. Something similar to the battery. my iPhone 12, which I am currently using to post this, can clearly and easily understand what I am saying. Does anyone know why this is the case? I don’t want to lose the ability to use dictation effectively like I did with my iPhone 8 and even now with my iPhone 6s. Thanks.

Face ID
Check on rotor sound is on.
I kind of noticed the same thing with dictation.
I’ve noticed the same thing with dictation, on and off.
When this occurs, I’ve resorted to using Braille screen input.
although, that’s been crashing for me a lot lately, due to the way I’m trying to do the return gesture. Sometimes, when I do this gesture, with a two finger swipe right, it will cause the rotor to turn, which will then cause braille screen input to crash. This issue also occurs, more often in fact, when deleting the last word I typed, which is accomplished with a two finger swipe left.
When that happens, I resort to typing with the onscreen keyboard.

I don't know about the dictation thing, but the face id thing you mentioned does happen to me, mainly after playing a podcast.
I just toggle Voiceover off then back on with the shortcut and it fixes it, until the next time that happens.
The haptic feedback lets me know when the phone is unlocked.
It's just one of those minor quircs that I've learnt to deal with.
The problem with that is
The problem with that is that it requires me to keep haptic feedback on for VoiceOver, which as far as I understand takes considerably more battery than leaving it off and I also find it distracting. Is there a way to turn haptic feedback on only for certain actions? For example, when unlocking the phone and when using the home or app switcher gestures?
Yes, there is. You go to…
Yes, there is. You go to settings, accessibility, voiceover, audio, and sounds and haptics. There you'll find a series of buttons that allow you to turn on/off sounds individually. Just double tap on the button you want and adjust it accordingly.
Thanks, but
Thanks, but I can’t seem to find the relevant sound. Which is the sound that it uses for when the phone is successfully unlocked? Thanks.
If I'm understanding you…
If I'm understanding you correctly, you'll want the one that says Authentication Succeeded. If you want to explore the sounds, you double tap on the buttons, then swipe right until it says preview.
I don’t see it
Authentication succeeded does not seem to be in the list. I can’t seem to find it.
Where did you get stuck? I…
Where did you get stuck? I have followed the instructions I wrote down and they work. Settings, accessibility, Voiceover, audio, sounds and haptics, and from then you swipe and check out all the buttons that you want. Double tap on anything you want, swipe right and you can turn the sound on or off, and to the very right you can preview the sound so you don't shut off the wrong one.
Face ID.
Hi Tetris Monster,
When I'm not sure if face ID was recognized, I just do my custom gesture I made to get to the home screen. Then, of course, if face ID didn't work, I just put in my pass code.
