Before I Update to Big Sur

I am still running Catalina 10.15.5. I have ben holding out on updating to Big Sur because I wanted to wait until all the major bugs were squashed. For those who are currently running Big Sur, how is your experience with it? Do any of you regret updating? Is there anything in particular that I, as a Voice Over user, should be aware of before updating? I believe that the messages app works differently with VO in Big Sur. Is that correct? How is VO performance in Big Sur? FYI, I have a 2015 13 inch MacBook Pro, with a Core I7, 16 gigs of ram, and a one terabyte SSD. Not the latest hardware but pretty good for 2015 vintage and I wouldn't think it should struggle with Big Sur. I primarily use Pages, Numbers, Mail, Messages, Safari, Amadeus Pro, and Marz Edit. All thoughts are welcome. I don't know of any real advantages Big Sur would offer me so I'mcontent to stick with Catalina for a while longer if I need to.

Big Sur has no sirious bugs, unless you use Siri voices with VoiceOver. I am testing the developer beta and find it very stable. the messages app is different with VoiceOver, but it's not much different. Upgrade to Big Sur and you won't go wrong doing so. there's some nice features and interesting stuff coming in the next reliese.

Daniel

Big sur doesn't have any serious bugs, appart from siri, which I don't use anyway. I haven't regretted upgrading, although i'm still getting used to some stuff.

I believe I will go ahead and upgrade. How does the messages app work differently?

One of the most noticeable features to get use to is the redesign of the messages app. With VoiceOver there are more elements and clutter to navigate through then in the previous OS. Another thing I find frustrating is the keystroke to delete messages (command plus backspace) does not work in iMessages. You have to go through the menus if you would like to remove a conversation. This keyboard command is still present in other apps such as mail to quickly delete emails. I'm not sure why it was specifically removed from the iMessages app. You will get use to the changes, it just takes some time to learn and accept the updated layout.

Like others, my experience of Big Sur has been generally painless.

If you use a Siri voice with VoiceOver, then be aware that it's currently not possible to change the speaking rate.

It's also currently impossible to reliably interact with Dock items, meaning that you cannot remove them or access some options.

The Messages app takes a little time to adjust to, but its added features make this worthwhile.

I'm now struggling to think of anything else of note to say about Big Sur. It's relatively stable and bug free, but isn't a dramatic upgrade.

I have now updated to Big Sur and have used it for about a day. I have had no issues at all. The new layout of the messages app did take a little getting used to but I have the hang of it now and I like having the ability to pin a conversation like in IOS. Thanks for the feedback.
