Guys, I am not one of these people who normally gets paranoid with my devices, like, "Oh no! The government is listening to me," etc, but this does have me slightly unsettled. At first, I didn't think much of it more than a bug, but when I went back afterward and started thinking about it, I see a theme here, and it's just a little disturbing.
So, I've now been, at the time of this forum topic posting, a member of Clubhouse for about 2 days... so, just barely over 48 hours. Wanna welcome me? LOL, just kidding. But no. In all seriousness, I received a push notification stating that someone I knew had just joined Clubhouse, was I free to welcome them in?
So, obviously, I tapped the notification, and a room was created. I'm not gonna reveal who joined for security reasons, however, the person it told me about used to work at Freedomscientific. They don't anymore, but they used to. Let me make it very very clear. I do not now, nor have I ever worked for them, ever. that's what makes this so trippy.
So, I come in and say, "Hello," fill in the blank name. It's Chris. Can you hear me? I knew they were unuted, as I heard a lot of phone movement. I told them, your mike is on. Don't worry. Just start speaking. I can hear you moving around. You're live.
They finally spoke up. Well, this is someone I've not talked to in at least a year or 2, although they are in my phone contacts. I really should text them, but anyway, I digress.
So, after about half a minute to a minute, I started to realize, this is *not* sed person who I was notified about. they even told me, I'm not X person. I used to work with him/her, but this isn't them. That's when they said, I just got a notification as well that X person joined, did I want to welcome them in. Finally, I hear aside me and this other person, a 3rd voice. They, too, got the notification, and finally a 4th voice popped up. So by the end of it, there were 3 people, not including myself in this closed welcome room.
The only thing I can think is, This initial person I was referencing, all of us had him/her in our contacts, which would make sense for reasons that will become apparent in a second. Maybe we therefore all got the notification, and all of us clicked to welcome him/her coensidentally, and all were therefore merged into the same room to welcome them.
The only thing that makes this a little creepy to me is, everyone except for me who came into that room either currently works for, or at least at one time did! work for Freedomscientific.
So, how in gad zukes is it knowing that all of them worked or still work for FS? I don't even think everyone who was up there states this in their profiles.
I dunno. that's just a bit freaky. Kind a makes me wonder what other info Clubhouse might have figured out about me. Again, I'm normally the last person you'd see being paranoid about this type thing. So much so, I've been known to mock people to some extent who get really bent out of shape over this whole thing, but in this case, wow! that was just a little weird.
Has anyone else up here, specifically with Clubhouse had something similar happen to them? I'm saying with Clubhouse, not other services. I wanna keep this discussion specific to the CH platform. I'm not here to discuss how this applies to Amazon Echos, Google Home devices, etc. That isn't the purpose of this thread, so please respectfully, let's stay on topic with my initial question.

It just uses contacts
It just uses the contacts. And it's not surprising that the others work for FS, they're likely the most plugged in to the online community and likely to be on Clubhouse, and may have even invited one another on the platform.
Haven't experienced this
I myself haven't experienced this.
I woudl not think of this as…
I woudl not think of this as creapy. I think of it as cool. I've met friends I have not talked to in years and some I have no more memories of. I've been a member now for abouta week and some change, my beginner hat is now off of my picture.
I don’t really see that…
I don’t really see that creepy. I feel like that’s how they met said person. Especially if he/she is associated with freedom scientific. Which i believe you mentioned. Even though you’ve never worked for them. It’s like you said, y’all had this person in your contacts. And they just happen to know him/her from work. That’s all. And you know him/her however you met said person. I hope what i’m saying makes sense. Lol
Look how small we are
To my knowledge, Clubhouse wasn't quite the mainstream hit I was suspecting it might become. It seems once again, to be part of the tiny blindness community that expound upon how cool it is. I grab my nickname, bail out. Not sure if I'll use it or whatever. As for being creeped out, I don't see the problem with it. We don't always know what someone's work life might've been. Maybe they didn't tell people they worked there so that creeped you out now you discovered it. I don't know. Decide whether or not you want to use it and see where the wind takes you.
Actually I'm talking wiht a…
Actually I'm talking wiht a lot of sighted poele and educating. Mat something from all things Disney and some language learning stuff, all sighted and sometimes over 1000 people listening. I plan on giving a talk on some discriptive audio stuff, or rather participating in a panel at some point, all with sighted people It was the sighted person who gave us the idea btw.
