Hi everyone! We’re a team of undergraduate students in Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Environmental Science at the University of Washington who are working on a project to automatically provide audio descriptions for online video content. Even though audio descriptions are manually done for larger productions, user-generated content and other smaller productions are still inaccessible. We are looking for input about your experiences with accessible technology and audio descriptions to better understand which types of videos and which forms would be most useful. If you’re familiar with audio descriptions or would like to stay updated on our project, we would greatly appreciate if you filled out this survey, which should take at most 10 minutes: https://tinyurl.com/AudioDescriptionSurvey
This project is for a capstone course at UW - we have partially built out a prototype and should hopefully have an MVP in the next few weeks, and we are planning to actually release this product to the real world in the next couple of months. To be fully transparent, we are students and unfortunately cannot promise compensation for completing the survey or participating in interviews as our funding for this class is extremely limited, but we would really love to hear any input that you have because it can help us better design our product. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments about this project. Thank you so much!

Am I understanding you…
Am I understanding you correctly in thinking that by automatic you mean AI-generated? If so, I'm not sure how useful those descriptions will be. A lot of the big tech companies (facebook, apple, google) provide automated image descriptions, and while some are fairly accurate, others miss the mark entirely, to the extent that as a blind user, I don't trust them. I feel like video descriptions might be even less accurate. If you mean descriptions that are written by humans but voiced by synthetic speech, that would be super helpful.
AI
It all depends on the AI that is being used and how competent the programmers are with machine learning.
If GPT-3 is used for this we could be in for some amazing descriptions. That thing can create code for apps.
Very cool!
Personally I'm a big fan of AI-generated descriptions! I think your project sounds extremely useful, and can't wait to experience the result.
I'll go fill out the survey.
