Weather apps for IOS

Hello folks, I'm writing today as I've thought about this long and hard. I was recommended Weather Radio which I've enjoyed. I had written them about some issues which they confirmed via voiceover this year. Sadly, when I wrote through the app to find out about the status of the bug which has to do with reading the alerts and the constant back reading it does, I was informed that the app was removed from the app store. I got to thinking about what app to use as I liked weather radio and the way it gave alerts. I did try and podcasted about Weather Underground but I agree with the presenter, it doesn't feel that great, and the alerts are vague. It took me a bit to set up locations, the current, plus two others I have people in. Then I got to looking at Dark Sky which is a paid app. I'm not opposed for paying for an app, but the developer of this app says Apple. I remember reading on this site from someone from this app that was going to make changes, which were then implemented. I also saw something here called Carrot Weather which I only read here. What I'd like to do is find something similar to weather radio where I can customize the alerts I get like weather radio did. Weather Underground doesn't seem to cut it, the alerts they do have are good, and the forecast is nice, but am just looking to see what people are using. I would greatly appreciate if someone can assist me in this endeavor so I can make the best choice. Thanks for reading! I'm using an Iphone 11 gotten at the beginning of 2020, latest IOS 14.3 and use voice over exclusively with no braille.

Hi,
At the moment, I’m using carrot whether, and really like it. You have to pay for the app, then also pay for a subscription, if you want notifications. This is because notifications are delivered through a server.
If you have a Mac as well, they also have a Mac app. It’s also available on Apple TV.
It works great on the Apple Watch too.
The developer is extremely responsive, and is also very dedicated to voiceover users. If you run into a bug, send him an email, or tweet, and he will get back to you as soon as possible.
Twitter is probably quickest for that.
As of last month, I’m a tier to subscriber, on the monthly plan, and don’t regret it one bit.

That's good to know. I think the other app I was thinking of was weather gods which I saw here. I know there's a lot to choose from, so wanted to see what people were using.

Looking at the apps, I want something I can monitor multiple locations, I.E. mine plus several others. While I like the idea of Carrot, I don't want to buy, plus subscribe to a service as a subscription, but I'd consider it if nothing else is out there. One review said "no thanks" for buying the app plus paying for a subscription just to get what other apps already give you. I do like Weather Underground's get more where it gives me what I want to know, but that interface is clunky at best. Do all of these apps I list allow for multiple location monitoring? I've got someone in Des Moines, one in Texas, and of course monitoring my own weather.

I could be wrong, but I think the subscription thing may be changing very soon, for Carrot weather. I think it'll be free with in-app purchases, which will be subscriptions.
Again, I recommend asking the developer, which can easily be done, via Twitter.
One cool thing I love about Carrot weather, is that a 3-finger swipe in either direction; going across, will take you between your saved locations.
So, I could be focused on my home location, and check the weather for Apple Park, in just a few swipes to the right, with 3 fingers.

To get back to my original location, I'd do a 3-finger swipe left, until VO announced my location.
You can also use the time travel feature, which allows you to check the weather for sometime in the future.

While I've not made any decisions as of yet, this is good information to know. I didn't see anything in any of the app descriptions about multiple location support, so its interesting carrot supports that.

By Weather Gods (Scott) on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Hi J.R.

Just a quick note to say Weather Gods supports up to seven locations (we call these favorites), for notifications (rain, snow, wind etc) and unlimited locations for severe weather alerts.

You can quickly change favourite locations by using a three finger swipe down.

By DPinWI on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Just another nod to Weather Gods. It does everything you are asking for.

By Dennis Long on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Weather gods is brilliant. If you want it to start in your list of favorites it can be done. If you want only certain notifications for certain places you can do that. If you want daily summaries for the weather for a place or multiple places you can do that. As for accessibility this developer is the best there is. He is a true pleasure to work with as I am a tester. He takes pride in accessibility if something breaks it is fixed. So it is worth the price plain and simple. These are my opinions but I am not normally this nice *smile* I gave a 5 star rating in the app store and I reserve that for only the best apps. If i could've I would've given 10000 stars unfortunately this was not possible.

By KE8UPE on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

I could be wrong, but awhile ago, the developers behind Weather Gods, said on here that due to ongoing server costs they too would become free with subscriptions. Anyone who already bought the app would keep all current features, but new ones will require a subscription. If you have questions about pricing, i highly recommend reaching out to them, which can be done via Twitter or email. They’re based in the UK, but they respond to both very quickly.

By Weather Gods (Scott) on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Hi Skippy,

That's correct. At some point in 2021 we will switch to a free version of the app with a subscription model for everything else.

It's my intention to ensure that users who have already paid for the app would get a lifetime subscription to the premium tier, however, we are not settled yet on pricing or tier names.

The premium tier will include:
- Seven favourite locations
- Notifications for all favourites
- Apple Watch App and all complications
- Ten day hourly weather in the weather wheel
- Widgets; small, medium and large for each favourite location
- Siri Shortcuts
- Unlimited severe weather alerts

The following will not be included in the premium tier and will be a separate subscription as and when we put them into the app
- Air Quality
- Lightning strikes
- Storm cells
- Rainfall radar - it's my ambition to develop a fully accessible rainfall radar map

There will be three tiers :
- free
- basic
- premium

I haven't fully worked out what will be in the free and basic tiers. The free tier will probably be a single location and severe weather alerts for that location. Nothing else.

The basic tier is most likely the premium tier without the notifications and the Apple Watch.

The biggest cost (other than developer time and my time is for all intents and purposes free) is the cost of data. The more an app consumes data then the more it costs to deliver that data. Hence, data hungry features such as notifications, Apple Watch complications, widgets etc will always be a paid for feature.

Scott, thanks for this. I also did read that weather gods would be going subscription based, but don't see that in the app. I do need severe weather alerts, for multiple locations, as weather radio stopped giving me alerts, and this morning, all Wunderground said was significant weather for your area. That was near 6 am. I'll be sure to contact if I've got questions, but I am leaning toward weather gods, but want to read what people have to say before making that decision.

By J.R. on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

So if I go ahead and buy say in the next few days, I would be all set then?

By J.R. on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

OK, so here's what I need.

Severe weather alerts for multiple locations.
The rain I'm fine with current location, so thats fine.
Similar to weather radio where I could customize the alerts for the severe alerts.
Notifications for those alerts like weather radio did. I think they stopped giving me alerts recently.

Sounds to me like weather gods will do this and I've tweeted them. I'm 8 hours behind UK time, so don't think I'll get a response now, but had some additional questions re: subscription and these needs.

Hi J.R.,

If (and only if) you are looking for an app to just do customizable weather alerts for multiple locations, you might try Storm Shield. The alert style (down to the sound the app plays) is similar to that of Weather Radio; and the only alerts that require a subscription, as far as I can tell at least, are lightning alerts. Unlike Weather Radio, lightning alerts are only sent when a nearby strike occurs, not when no strikes have occurred in the last 30 minutes. The interface of the app is so-so, and I only use it for alerts and use something else for forecasts.

Michael,

While I like that idea, I'd also like something for weather. I'm not fond of the default apple app, it doesn't give much to my liking, and while it has a good record of being pretty accurate since no weather app is perfect, I have to scroll down just to get the details. I like weather radio because I can get all that plus the alerts. The thought is great though, don't get me wrong.

By Rafal on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

I was considering to purchase the app. Promises or informatiion regarding future subscription models have discouraged mefrom purchasing the app. I generally prefer to pay once rather than via subscription models that in turn mean more money spent for the app.

By Weather Gods (Scott) on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Hi Rafal,

That's understandable.

Unfortunately the paid app is no longer sustainable - it hasn't been for some time now, leaving me no other option than a subscription model or discontinue the app.

I certainly do hope that you won't have to discontinue the app, as it is my favorite! This is by far the most accessible weather app I have ever used!

By Dennis Long on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Melissa I agree with you it is the best most accurate app I will subscribe the day the subscriptions are available.

By Dawn 👩🏻‍🦯 on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

I also agree that weather gods is the way to go.
It’s accessible has everything you’re asking for and more, plus it’s fun! It’s so fun to watch the guards blink up at each other and wake up and look at each other. I don’t know that, but Scott cares about Accessibility. I’m a beta tester. And I’ve reported several bugs to him over the years that I’ve been testing this out. And each time, I got a quick and prompt response, and he works with you to fix whatever bugs. And even if they’re not fixed right away, to seriously fix within a couple of releases. To put this in perspective for you, WG. Is the only app that I beta test.

By Dennis Long on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

I agree. Weather gods is the only app I beta test. Scott is awesome and fixes bugs promptly.

When Weather Underground changed their app format a year or so ago they took away the scientific discussion. It’s difficult to find an app that lets you read that.

So will I!! I even like this app much better than Dark Sky.

Hi Cowwboy,

If you want an app that will let you see technical forecast discussions and get forecasts from NOAA/NWS, I personally use and have been very happy with NOAA Weather & Tides: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/noaa-weather-tides/id1055810226. The text information in the app is very accessible; just double-tap on the Forecast tab, and you can then read the forecast (including an hourly forecast, accessed by double-tapping on the date in question and then swiping through the different pages showing different conditions with 3 fingers) and the forecast discussion.

Hi, Chiming in because weather apps are kind of my thing. As many others have said Weather Gods is one of my refuse to be without apps because of the responsiveness of its developer and the information it provides in an accessible form. The developer's commitment to accessibility and his availability to this community is unrivaled.
And I won’t hesitate to support it with the power of my purchasing dollars when subscriptions roll out because I’ve no problem paying for work and services which are of use to me.
Like Michael I've also taken to using Storm Shield for alerts as well because I'm the queen of redundancy. And while I do miss the lightning all clear notifications they can't be found elsewhere that I know of for now anyway. Sometimes there isn't one right solution for all use case scenarios and I always like to have backups in case accessibility breaks or something gets discontinued. That isn't the choice of others but it's what works for me. I hope you find that which will best suit your use case scenario. Take good care and as one meteorologist I know of says "enjoy the weather out there it's the only weather we've got."

By Robin on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

I also wanted to mention Max Tracker for those who are interested in hurricane notifications. I don’t spend a lot of time within the app itself but do like its hurricane related notifications.
Another option for weather alerts that verbalize in an accessible form is The Weather Channel app. For a while its accessibility was dicey but it seems to have gotten better in terms of the interface of the app itself. You can pay for an ad free experience but you do not need to pay for its alerts which include severe weather and Realtime rain and lightning and pollen alerts during that season of the year.
I also enjoy Weather Bug for its alerts and for reading current conditions and forecasts. It too has an ad free subscription but that isn’t necessary to use the app. I choose it for myself but again that’s user preference.
I hope this helps.
Take good care.

Thanks. I’ll give it a shot. I have been using Deep Weather just for the discussions and don’t care for it as much.

I keep meaning to write the developer, but I never think about it when I have the time. Does anyone else in the US notice that where it says your elevation in feet the number appears to be in meters?

By Weather Gods (Scott) on Friday, December 25, 2020 - 18:21

Thanks everybody for the kind comments and support!

Not sure why your elevation is in feet, we get that number from Apple for the GPS location and our database for the non-GPS. Is it all locations?

I've also done a lot of work this week with subscriptions and tonight's beta will be a dry run, allowing for the beta testers to try out the options and impact. I'm going to start a new thread on subscriptions as I would appreciate feedback from the community.

Thanks Scott for all that you do. I know that it's hard work, but I certainly appreciate it.

My elivation appears to be in meters even though it says feet. The town I live near is just below 900 feet above sea level. I think the old Weather gods would give me an elivation of somewhere around 860 feet. I haven’t checked it with an actual GPS app. My house is at about 1050 feet elivation which I have checked with GPS, but the old Weather Gods app would use the town as it’s location. The new app gives me an elivation of 270 feet. 270 times 3.3 is 891, so I’m guessing that it’s using meters instead of feet.
