What questions do you have reguarding garage band?

Dear Isaac. I am looking for a detailed podcast on using GarageBand with iOS and Mac. I got few tips on how to use GarageBand on both platforms just by playing myself but I find it difficult a bit. I just need more tips and tricks. I am looking for a way to play music using a querty keyboard on an iPad. Is it possible? Thanks.
I actually started recording a podcast for GarageBand on the iPhone last night, so It's funny you should ask for one. So far, I've covered how to select the position where playback or recording start, and all the details about the vocal track. Tonight, or whatever I have time anyway, I'll work on more of it. I intend to cover all of the instruments, how to select them, and so on. As far as Courted keyboards on the iPad, it's definitely possible I think, because it has a pretty Highknoll polyphony. Maybe I'll get on it right now actually, since I have a friend over tonight. That is, if my kids let me.
Hi there! If you head over to www.macfortheblind.com, and go to demonstrations, there is a link that will bring you to another website that has three or four podcasts on using GarageBand on a Mac. Not the most structured podcasts I've heard, but I picked up a few tricks by listening to them. I've been using GarageBand for Mac myself now for a few months, so feel free to ask if there is something specific you need help with, and hopefully I can give you some hints or point you in the right direction. But now that I've used it for a while, I've run in to some pretty frustrating limitations in GarageBand. So since I use this for professional production purposes, I'm really considering buying protools at the moment. But if you want to do simple recordings and just have fun, GarageBand is a great tool for that! All the best and good luck! Cliff
Great job Ken. I highly appreciate all of the great podcasts you've posted, last night i was listening tu your podcast about ThumbJam and it was wonderful! I never used it because I don't play guitar myself. I've listened to your podcast about formel spirit racing game after that I purchased it. All the best.
Thank you so much cliff for your support. Exactly. Just for fun and simple recording. I totally agree, it is frustrating a lot! A lot of tables and areas to interact with. In other words, the interface is confusing a bit I strugle a lot. Another feature that I don't like is the editing part. For example: on GoldWave I can mark items by hitting the left brakit and hit the right brakit when selection ends. In GarageBand it's not similar,. I'm not sure how to do it. Protools is very good for advanced users, I just play organ with GarageBand using software instruments, I can't use the sounds from my keyboard though. Any idea how to use the built in sounds and drum kits?
Hi again, Khalfan. Cutting and pasting in GarageBand can be a real struggle, and I haven't yet found a very efficient way of doing this myself. But if you listen to some of the podcasts that you find the link to on the macfortheblind website, you'll get a few clues there, if I remember right. Not sure if I understand you right with using the sounds of your keyboard. If you want to use an external keyboard to play a software instrument, you would have to have a MIDI interface or a external soundcard with a MIDI in port to do this. Or if your keyboard has an USB-port, it's much easier to connect it to your Mac with a USB-cable and just start playing right away. But if you want to use the actuall sounds and drums that's built into your keyboard, and not just use it as a masterkeyboard to trigger the software instruments, you will have to record it as a real instrument. That is, a audiotrack instead of a MIDI track, that is the track type that is used for recording software instruments. To do this, you will have to use a cable, either from the keyboards headphones output or if the keyboard has one or two line out outputs, you're better of using thise. To get the sound into your Mac, you have to solutions: Either use a cable that has a MIDI-jack plug in the end that you want to connect to your Mac, and plug it into the minijack-input on your Mac. The minijack input on a Macbook for instance, can be used both for headphones and for line in signal. The other and best solution, is to buy a external soundcard that has normal jack inputs, the big version of the mini-jack, and use a normal jack-cable from the audio output on your keyboard to the audio input on the soundcard. That's the prefered solution. But using the minijack right on your Mac works fine as well. Don't know if this answers your question. If it doesn't, I'll try again, if you could explain more what you want to be able to do. Hope this helps Cliff

I suppose this is as good a place as any to ask...does anybody know about how long/large of a file Garage Band can handle? I recently got Hokusai (which is fantastic, by the way), and it will definitely be my main audio editing app. Unfortunately, it can't handle extremely long files, so I'm looking for another app to use to trim out the needed portions of some longer files.

Not exactly sure of the time of recording it can handle, but the link I posted above had some information about that. I have however run into the size limit of 2gB a couple of times. But then I probably had ten or more tracks containing audio and a lots of overdubs, so for simple recordings that will probably not be an issue. I think that one minute of uncompressed audio takes up somewhere around 8mB of space, so you should be ok in most cases. But there is a time limit as well that you can read more about in the link. Thank you so much Cliff for your great suggestions. It was very helpful. Actually I've just purchased the IK MultiMedia iRig keys for iOS, PC and Mac and I've been using it with GarageBand foR iOS. I'l be making a full demonstration about it and submit it to the AppleVis website. Any one interested? How does that sound? Regards. Khalfan.

I haven't forgotten about my podcast, but there is been a lot of things going on lately. Hopefully I'll have time to finish the editing tonight and send it.
Dear Ken. Thank you for the great efforts. Sure I do appreciate that. I've just read your reply, take your time. Warm regards. Khalfan.
Hi! I'm glad I could help, Khalfan! What exactly is the IK Multi media thing? Sounds very interesting, and I would love to hear a podcast about it! I, myself, have bought the 66 keys Novation MKII, that has a bunch of knobs and faders that can be assigned to control all sorts of parameters, like reverb and parameters for the actual instrument your playing... Just looking forwards to the day when I figure out how to do that! And Ken, I'll be very interested in your podcast as well, when you manage to finish it! Hehe... ;) By the way, any of you found a good way of editing tracks in GarageBand? If you have, let me know! :)

Good day Cliff. I've uploaded a podcast on AppleVis website, it is currently being reviewed by the editorial teamm. It is very interesting, it has a 37 keys, 3 octaves and very portable. These are just few tips, the rest is a surprise. Please, I'd be waiting to hear from all of you after listening the podcast. Hope every one enjoys it. I'm available on twitter, please follow and I'll follow back @khalfan_bd. Warm regards. Khalfan.
Wow! You work fast, Khalfan! I'm very curious to your podcast and I'm very much looking forward to hearing it! Maybe this is something I should consider buying to bring with me in my suitcase when I'm out on tours... Really missed a portable keyboard that I can bring with me to create stuff in boring hotel rooms when I'm out traveling... I'll give you my responce when I've listened to it! All the best Cliff
