creating a podcast

Hey all!

I've got a bit of a cunumdrum. I'd like to create a podcast or 2 for AppleVis. What I thought about doing was a quick tip on Siri. Then if all goes well, I might do an app demo.

But I got a couple questions. Because I have never done anything like this before. And I've never done editing of any sort before either. I'd like to try and use the built-in Voice Memos app to do thwh. But every time Can try I just get silence when Can play the recording back. And it doesn't seem to be getting Vo. either.

I can’t really afford to get anything look up microphone or any apps that anyone that’s in podcasting can really and really should be using. So that’s why I’m trying to go with a free And or low-cost option. My questions are,

One. Is the voice memos do you to be using for this purpose?
2. If so what are any tips for using it for podcast on here? And if not, what are some free or low cost options?
I just hate to spend a lot of money on something that I’m probably going to use maybe once or twice. Maybe I’ll use it more if things go well. But, this is gonna be my first time doing anything related to this. And like I said, I don’t have any experience in either podcasting or editing any kind.
I appreciate any help and tips that you guys and community can use. Thank you all in advance!

Are you trying to record on your iPhone?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm currently developing a new AppleVis blog that dives into recording a podcast on a Mac using GarageBand, with your voice and VoiceOver's voice on separate tracks so that you can mix them. Although I have some moderate audio equipment, it's pretty easy to do this with low-cost USB microphones.

But if you're trying to record on your iPhone, that's something I haven't tried, and my blog won't help. Sorry.

This will be recorded using my ipad. I will be doing the demo on the quick tip and if I do the app demo it'll be done on the ipad.
I will be recording everything on the iPad, as well as demonstrating. So the iPad will be doing double duty as recorder and demo.

I think it might be the double duty that's killing you. I just did a small experiment where I started to record a voice memo, then switched to my BARD Mobil app and from there I started playing an audiobook. Then I switched back to VoiceMemos and listened to what I got. It recorded everything up to the point where I tried to start playing my audiobook.

If you have a second iOS device, you could use it to record while you talk and interact with the iPad.

Hope that helps.

! Maybe in the future when were I get an iPhone. I can use that record while I interact with the iPad. Do you think there’s another app that’s either free or low cost that can do this? Or resources to get another device either. Do you do you at least the quick tip podcast first. And see if everything goes well.

Hi.
Screen recording may be what yu are looking for. I‘ve used it for recording demos, it captures VO and the mic without problems. The microphone is disabled by default, so you have to enable it in the settings screen of screen recording, in the control center.

Remember that screen recording records a video. Making it audio is easy, I do it with a shortcut.

What shortcut do you use? This will be my first time doing anything like this. So I’ll need all the help I can get. Also, will Apple Vis accept it?

Thank you! I’ll let you know how it goes! I never knew you could do this! This is why I really love this community! Every day, even if I don’t post here, I learn something. Through an app, a podcast, whatever. I learn something. Every day. Or nearly every day.

Hi Dawn,

Thought I jump in to the conversation. Back in when I started doing podcasting I used a digital audio recorder. I just placed that in front of me and I started the demonstration from there. I believe I did this for several years and it worked just fine. I know that when we do receive any podcast submissions to AppleVis. We are always happy to help out with any minor editing. Especially in the time frame of the beginning where we start the device and to the ending of the podcast where we are done to turning off the app or recorder. Just a thought but I also have done a podcast on an app called Audio Memo. The only downside of using Voice Memo, screen recorder, Audio Memo, and other apps is that you will need to make sure that the app in question that you want to record will work first. As sometime they will not because it can stop the recording because the app needs the same resource that the app is wanting. Such as certain microphone responses that you may use, or sometime to certain streaming audio might the culprit. Which is why I equally just found that a basic digital audio recorder would suffice. My only advice is to always record in the best format that the recorder or app can provide. Preferably a lossless format like AIFF and WAV. M4A and MP3 are alright but they generally are compressed and editing in those formats can make the quality of the sound to degrade. Voice Memo and Dolby iOS apps are great because they come with a feature to reduce background noise that can greatly improve on your recording. Don't feel that your podcast has to be good as anyone else because in the end it is all about the quality of the content and demonstration of your presentation. I hope this helps. Lastly, also as an alternative is that I have been known to use my laptop as a recorder as I hover above the system during a demonstration. Just make sure to do some demo runs to check that your voice match the sound or voice from the iPhone. Equal balance of the sound are a must. Plus as a bonus try not to move around much as that can be picked up by the microphone and may cause difficulties for listeners.

Does this help! Thank you! I’m definitely going to look into that app! Also, how do you submit something through the form? Because I have one. And I created it. But every time I try and submit it I can select it, but then I don’t see any button to submit it. I just see a cancel Landy double tap to dismiss context menu. Then when I try and submit it again it says that the file is dimmed. So I don’t know how. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or what.
For now since this is my first time, I emailed a link. It should be a dropbox one. But I would like to be able to just submit some things through the form on the website. But I can’t figure out how to work it. I can send a screenshot or at least screen recording and convert it to an audio format if that would help.
I will definitely look at that podcast, and that app though! Thank you so much again! :-)
