Siri listening beep

Hello
After updating to iOS 14 and 14.1 I have noticed that the sound Siri makes to indicate it is listening no longer plays I have some vision so I’m able to see that the Siri icon has come up on screen.

I speak my request and notice the sound that Siri has stopped listening plays.

My mum is totally blind and mainly accesses her phone through Siri (she has voiceover on but can’t really double tap so everything is done through Siri) not having the beep to indicate Siri is listening is going to cause her real problems.

I have looked in Siri settings and in accessibility settings I cannot find an option to turn on or off the Siri listening sound.

So my question is this if you have no vision is there a way to know that Siri has activated? Am I missing something really obvious?

Please are in mind my mum is older and has learned things later in life... she has only just got her first computer so she’s not the most tech savvy!

The listening sound does play for me on my iPhone XS Max even on iOS 14.01. I guess you've already tried what I'm going to suggest and it's annoying to hear that again but I really have nothing better to say: Have you tried rebooting the phone and made sure the ring/mute switch is not set to mute?
Does your mom use the phone speaker or a headset? What model does she have?

Hi Gemma, As per previous no issues here. iOs14.01 iPhone11. So the phone mute button should not make a difference but hard resetting you're phone may work. Strangely, I have an old iPhone 8 and whilst the tone works as expected Siri seems not to speak if the phone is muted so I don't get that.

No problem here either. The volume for Siri could have been turned down. It's happened to me. Just activate Siri and turn up the volume, see if that helps. Other than that, I can't add to what has already been said.

If you go into the settings itself, there's something about always speaking. If you press that it should work. I had a little surprise when it was acting weird. I fixed it and though I don't like the tones but prefer the vibrations, I use it that way.

I have played around with all the settings on my iPhone and iPad.

For some unknown reason it makes the listening sound on both but only if VoiceOver is running.

However if I’m using a headset it works and makes the listening noise even with VoiceOver off.

Also if I say ‘hey Siri’ it makes the listening noise. Again even with VoiceOver off.

But if the phone is locked or unlocked and I activate Siri with the button without VoiceOver on it makes no sound.

It has to be a bug!

Now I just hope it works for my mum!

Thanks for all your suggestions though!

but I still get no sound when I say Hey Siri, only the beep after I have made my request. I have a 13 mini and I am wondering if this is device-related. I had no problems with my 8+.

iPad Pro 5th generation on iOS 15.5. I usually launch Siri using the assistive touch menu but sometimes by saying hey Siri. In both instances there is no tone indicating she is listening unless Voiceover is turned on. I've checked settings to be sure they match the suggestions above and they do. With Voiceover on if I use hey Siri I get a response of HM? Instead of the tone. When using the assistive touch menu I get the tone. On my old iPad Pro iOS 12.4.1 the same - no listening tone unless Voiceover is on.
