Double tapping the Lock button to end a call

So does that actually work? I've been an iPhone user for less than 2 weeks. One of the first things I read is that you can double-tap the Power/Lock button to end a call. I know we're able to do a two-finger double-tap to end calls, and that works for me most of the time. But ending a call with the Power button has me intrigued, because I've tried it several times and wasn't able to get it to work. The only time I seem to be able to get the Power button to end a call is if I take the phone away from my ear (which changes it over to speakerphone), double-tap the screen to unlock the phone, and then press the Power button once. Pressing it while the phone is to my ear only seems to put the call on speakerphone.

Hi Brooke, To the best of my knowledge, pressing the lock button twice is only used to ignore an incoming call. Double-tapping the screen with two fingers is the only shortcut to end a call other than just tapping on the end button. Michael

Hi Brooke, First, let me mention I'm running iOS5, so this may be different on your phone. When I want to end a call, I press the Lock button just once when I have the phone up to my ear. It doesn't do it instantly though, It usually takes 2, maybe 3 seconds to finally hang up and go to the lock screen. I believe this also worked the same way when I was running iOS 4. Michael

This has worked the same way for me both in iOS 5 and 6. You press the lock button once to end a call. This *only works* if you have the phone to your ear, thus the earpiece is active. If the phone is on speaker, the lock button will lock the screen, not end the call.

I'm going to try this a few more times today. So far, I haven't had much luck getting it to work, and I've noticed from asking the question on another site that it seems to be hit-and-miss for others too. Right now, the only way I can get the power button to end a call is to put the phone on speaker and unlock the screen. Once that's done, it seems to be working. But I plan on doing some experimenting today.

Hi Brook, here are my experiences. When I end a call using the power button, with the phone to my ear, it does something different. It does, hang up the call nearly instantly. However, it then clicks as though the screen locks, then instantly ends up in that screen where do I want to unlock the phone? This is an iPhone four, I know, old school lol, and based on how slow VO is running and just annoyances with IOS six on it, I'm thinking of getting a five. I wanted to wait as long as possible, seeing as the new phone wasn't even a year old yet, I replaced it, but frustrations abound with this. Anyway I think this behavior would be a little more consistant if someone could be put to just test this feature, as you've said others have hit or miss chances with this. I realize that's probably a waste of someone's time in Apple though. The only other thing I can suggest, is have you tried turning off voice over? If you have it, when you're on the call, hit your home button three times, fast. That should say "Voice Over Off." Now that's done, I wonder if hitting the power button will work any differently for you? Now that i've posed that, I should test it myself. Hope this might help. Siobhan

I can get that to work some of the time but not all. My phoen goes to speaker then the screen locks. I have to unlockthe screen then 2 finger double tap to end the call. Bleh.

Marrie, that's exactly what's been happening to me. I've tested it several times today, and I'm getting the same results. Siobhan, I'll have to try it with VO off just to see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!
