Announcing AppleVis 2.0: The Second Decade Edition

By David Goodwin, 7 July, 2020

The Editorial Team and I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you! After a decade of serving our incredible AppleVis community, we are embarking on a significant journey of improvement and transformation for our website.

A decade ago, I created AppleVis with little more than a vision and a dream. Never did I imagine that it would evolve into the vibrant and valuable resource it has become, all thanks to the incredible support and engagement of our community.

Over the past decade, our content management system has served us well. But it's begun to limit what we can do on the site. I want AppleVis to keep growing and improving to better serve your needs. So for the past few months, I've been working hard on a total rebuild of AppleVis from the ground up.

My primary goal throughout this process has been to maintain the user experience you love while introducing essential accessibility and usability enhancements. I especially aimed to enhance the experience for users with low vision, particularly on mobile devices.

While I've made every effort to ensure compatibility with the previous site, I anticipate some initial hiccups. There may be overlooked issues that only come to light now that the new site is live, or aspects I couldn't address until this moment. Additionally, I've made some required changes to some features and functionality due to the significant nature of this upgrade.

In the past, our routine site maintenance and upgrades mainly involved behind-the-scenes improvements. However, this time, due to the absence of an 'in-place' upgrade path, the process has been considerably more involved, necessitating certain alterations.

Although I've successfully carried over much of the old website's functionality to the new platform, some features couldn't make the transition due to technical limitations of the available tools. One such feature is the auto-posting of new content to our Twitter accounts. I understand the value these posts hold for many in our community, and I'm actively exploring alternative methods to automate this process. In the interim, I plan to manually share links to blog posts, podcasts, and trending forum topics on Twitter.

I anticipate ongoing fixes and enhancements in the days, weeks, and months ahead, so I kindly ask for your patience during this transition period.

This month, AppleVis will celebrate its remarkable tenth anniversary. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our users and visitors. With this upgrade, I aim to secure AppleVis on solid technological footing for many more years to come.

Thank you for being a part of our incredible journey. I can't wait to share this exciting new chapter with you!

I loved the new version, but I have one concern. How do I know if I’m logged in or not? Before my user name would be at the top of the page, but now nothing. So how will I know?

By David Goodwin on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Thank you all for the kind words.

It's been a rather hectic time since switching to the new site, as it turns out that there are a lot more issues to snag than I had hoped.

So, do please continue to bear with me as I keep squashing bugs.

As for knowing if you are logged in - when you are, 2 of the links near to the top of every page will be “My account” and “Log out”. Also note that if you are on an iPhone, these links will be on the collapsible menu.

Now, back to the bugs I go ☹️

Ten years! Time flies when you're having fun! This site has seen me through my Apple learning process into my continued use of iOS and Mac, and it's been very, very much appreciated. Thanks so much.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I did not know it has been 10 years. Nice job.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Whenever I put a comment, and go to home I am not able to leave the web page I am. After I add this comment, I will need to press f5 to refresh and leave to go to the home web page. Is this an issue?

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I am not able to stay log in. Whenever I close my browser be it Edge or Chrome, I have to log in every time.Using Windows 10, jaws 2020 and new edge or chrome.

By DMNagel on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

How do I see the other comment pages? They seem to have gone.

By Lydia Alverson on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I had no idea that this was coming. I was wondering what was going on with the website. I kept getting a message that said, "The provided host name is not valid for this server."

Now I understand. Keep up the great work.

First of all, 🥳🙌🏻👏🏻🍨🍦🧁🎂🕯🎈🎏🎀🎊🎉

And second of all, thank you! You guys have been with me through out my whole beginning start with my iPad mini 4, and continue to be with me through the various updates all the way up from 9.3.3 to 13.5.1 I can’t believe it’s the latest version. And I thank you guys for everything that you Have done and continue to do. I hope to get a Mac at some point. That will connect to my iPad, and when I do get it, i.e. back. And I can guarantee you guys that I will be coming back here with questions regarding the back. And brown displays on Apple products.

And third, I know there will be bugs. And I know that it might take me a little bit of time to get used to the new lamp. As for probably all of us. And I know you can’t possibly work out or find every single issue before something rather be a website or a piece of software goes life. It’s just not possible. Thank you for trying to squash As many pets as possible before launch. Thanks for continuing to squash bugs.

I’m just at the site almost daily. To look for new apps, a new Podcasts, and also see what’s going on with the lease offer.

hi
I'm so, so grateful for this website. it taught me last year that IOS is not too different from Android, after all. but also it's special in its own ways.
thank you so much for squashing bugs and constantly trying to make this new website a better place to be in.
all the applevis team is amazing!
I'm excited for the years ahead.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Will you be getting rid of the subject line for each post? I understand a main topic post has to have a subject but having to come up with subject lines when I just want to post a reply can be annoying.

By Trenton Matthews on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

You can leave the subject line blank, if ya so desire. (It's optional.)

It helps with answering questions easier, especially for those who are new to the Apple world.
That's my view on the matter anyway...

By David Goodwin on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I am truly sorry to all of you who are experiencing login issues at the moment. Believe me when I say that this is personally devastating after all the development and testing that I've done over the past months.

For some, clearing the browser cache does resolve this problem.

The following page provides instructions for doing this for most browsers:

https://kb.iu.edu/d/ahic

Regrettably, this does not appear to resolve the problem for everybody, so I am currently investigating this further (not made easy as I can't yet reproduce this behaviour).

One thing that I have just tried is deleting all existing sessions for the site. The downside is that everybody who has successfully logged in, will now need to do so again, but this is one possible solution that needs to be crossed off the list.

Some people also mentioned problems accessing the site when not including www in the address. This was my bad, as I was too heavy handed with some security settings. This was corrected yesterday, so applevis.com without those 3 Ws should now work fine again

In reply to by DMNagel

Hey DMNagel,

This was indeed another pesky bug, so thank you for the heads-up.

Comment paging should now be back to working as expected.

Hey Brad,

As Trenton says, the Subject field is not a required one. So, if you leave it empty, the site will simply use the first part of your reply as the subject.

By Callum Stoneman on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Hey,

I just want to say a massive thanks to the AppleVis team for such an amazing site! It has helped me massively, especially when I purchased my first Mac, and I'm sure it has also saved me a lot of money, emails and refunds on inaccessible apps. :)

I just looked at my account page and it turns out I joined in 2013, genuinely can't believe it's been 7 years since I found this site!

Keep up the good work, here's to another 10 years.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

That's great about the subject line. I'm so glad to hear that I don't have to write a subject for everything.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I just got this error message when posting without a subject.

Error message
Unable to send email. Contact the site administrator if the problem persists.

By David Goodwin on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

The numbering of comments was actually removed some time ago due to it not working properly.

However, it's certainly something that I hope to be able to bring back in the future.

Although it's obviously not the same, when viewing comments now, if you are using a screen reader it should tell you if the comment is a reply to a previous comment.

So, something in the form of: "In reply to “comment subject” by UserName”

By Roxann Pollard on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

David, thanks for posting the clearing browser content. This was the only way I could finally log back into the sight.

Regarding the site update... I was shocked to realize that this site is 10 years old and that I've been using my iPhone the same amount of time. It must be the site went live probably shortly before I got my first iPhone, because it was the first site that came up, which offered me a wealth of new iPhone info for a brand new user. Personally, I have found this content to be a priceless part of my learning curve. I appreciate you and your team for all that you do. Thank you so much!

Here's to the next 10 years! Cheers!!!

By Roxann Pollard on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Hey David, I just thought I'd give you an update... Although I can now successfully log in, I find that I must log in for each forum I'm reading, if I want to post something and even if I shut down the site and come back in fresh. I have had Windows save my log in credentials but I still need to log in everywhere, anyway.

By David Goodwin on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

In reply to by Roxann Pollard

Thank you Roxann, hearing your experience may just possibly have helped with isolating the problem.

I've now made a change that should hopefully resolve the login issues.

But, in case it hasn't, I've now reserved some flight tickets to a far away hideaway 😉

By JC on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Hi,
I would like to say Kudos and happy 10th birthday!! I wish AppleVis all the very best. Glad the site is back up.

By Kelly Sapergia on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I just noticed that the RSS feeds for the Mac and iOS app directories no longer work. On the RSS page, there's a feed that shows new apps in all directories, but there aren't any for the individual directories. Will these be returning?

By Roxann Pollard on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Yaaaaay! After successfully logging into the site, on this particular forum, I then navigated back to the home page, and then back into this forum, but it appeared that I needed to log back in. then, I shut down the browser and then brought AppleVis back up fresh. I navigated to this forum, along with others, and no log in was required. It appears that the issue has been fixed. Great job.

By Ornella on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

so when I read some comments and refresh the page for example it would say 2 new comments. when I go back to it it was the comments that I already red. its still showing up as new.

By Ornella on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

so if I don't reply or post a comment under a post any comments I read after refreshing the page will still show up as new. how I'm posting this now none will show up as new unless if someone else posts on this thread for example.

By gailisaiah on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I so appreciate this site! Along with the iOS guide from NBP, Applevis has been and still is such a help to me! I appreciate everyone's willingness to help and answer questions. I try to return the favor. This site is a favorite! Here's to many more years!

By Matthew Whitaker on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Wow!!!! Congrats to everyone on the team! :-)

By DMNagel on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I'm not really in the mood to go through all the comments LOL, so here goes. There is a minor bug causing the timer to stand still. When it says for example, last comment five seconds ago, It will keep saying that even when I reload the page. This is no biggy, But just thought I'd mention it anyway. Only when I completely close the tab and come back later does the timer seem to work.

By Troy on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

High,
I'm finding the new website quite tedious to use with jaws. A lot of toggles and expanding of items before I can click on them. With the old website I could use my links list and easily navigate. Now I have to expand a lot of toggles. Also the add forum topic has a plus sign beside it so it's hard to find with the links list. Could you please fix this?

By Atakan on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Hello, congratulations. New version is better than. İf you want automatically post Twitter. You can use ifttt integration. ifttt can sent new post with RSS feed. You should check integration directory.

I just took a quick look at this page and aren't seeing the toggles, can you give me an example?

Then i can confirm it and hopefully something can be done for you.

I'm using NVDA by the way but that shouldn't make a diference.

Hello Troy,

If you're using AppleVis on a Windows computer, I recommend maximizing the browser window with Alt Space, X. This will expand the collapsed navigation menu, and from there you can use the Links List to navigate as you normally would.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I like the status alert you get when you post your comment, that's a nice upgrade.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I think it's strange that the forum and forum name tags show up just before the start of the text for the post you're reading.

Hello Brad,

One advantage to having the forum name at the top of each post is that the reader knows what forum a topic is in. Previously, if one wanted to see where a topic was posted, they would have had to go all the way down to the bottom of the post.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

In reply to by Brad

I've noticed there's a bredcrum heading, so that forum text isn't actually needed.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

This web page is not easy to move in. The other was simple and easy. I know that changes needed to made to it but is more dificult now. I am no longer looking forward to come and check this web for info because is not easy to use. Still appreciate your work.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I don't notice a difference, there's a couple of small things but I don't think anythings changed that much.

By Brad on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I'm getting a last updated 14 seconds ago message on this thread but I wrote my comment hours ago.

Hey Brad, the last updated or commented timestamp indicates the last time that the post was updated or there was a new comment, which ever is the newer.

In this case, the post itself had been updated since your comment, so that's why the timestamp wasn't the time of your comment.

By Jo Billard on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

I got an error message when I logged in, but as you can see, I am able to post, so I guess it's just a minor annoyance to skip over. I'm looking forward to exploring the new layout. I really appreciate this site, I have learned so much about my iPhone since I started using Applevis last year.

Hey Jo, thanks for the congratulations and kind words 🎉

As for the error message, if it was bout sending an email, then you logged in exactly as I was doing some testing of the login process, so that's what threw the message on this occasion.

By Ekaj on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - 21:18

Hello everyone. I briefly checked out the new site on my phone yesterday, and then logged in just now. I don't know whether this is a bug that needs to be squished or standard behavior, but my email address was not accepted. But my username got me in here just fine, and of course my password worked. But other than that, I like the new design and congratulate you on a job well done. Finally, a big happy 10th to AppleVis and many more! This site has certainly served me well over the years. I've been trying to get a sister to join but she's being rather stubborn, lol. She's had some tech issues. But thanks once again for all that you do, and please keep it up.
