My iPad has a sim card slot. I would like to use it.
I know I cannot call, but that is not a problem because I never do that and have other things. Is it possible to text? does not matter very much because I can use other things but does texting work?

Using an iPad with a SIM Card
Hi,
If you use your SIM card with your iPad, all the extra functionality you will be able to unlock with it is data usage. Your iPad will be able to use cellular data to browse the web, send and receive iMessages, and other such things but you cannot use SMS texting or make phone calls. Only iPhones support that functionality.
Sincerely,
Maddy
Data only
As stated above, iPads with cellular can only use it for data, not for SMS or phone calls. If the people you want to text with all have iPhones, then you should still be able to text them since the iPad will use iMessage for that. Texting with non-iPhone users, however, isn't possible.
One advantage to using an iPad for cellular data is that you can often get a better deal with your carrier. At least the major carriers in the US have different plans for tablets, though the best deals typically require you to add a tablet to an existing phone plan. I used to use my iPad for cellular data before getting my first iPhone earlier this year, and I piggy backed off of my brother's cellular plan to get data for $10 a month.
