Hello all!
I'm running windows 10 on a 2019 MacBook air with bootcamp.
At the beginning I didn't have any trouble updating my windows, but cince 1 month ago everytime I try to download updates to install them from the windows update panel, an error occurs while downloading the updates, no matter what I do.
I divided my 256 gb ssd in 2 128 gb each for MacOS and for Windows, because I read that in order to updates to go on I needed at least 128 gb on my windows partition.
I had done all the suggestions listed on internet to solve issues in windows update, but no one talks about bootcamp and the mac.
Anybody having this issue? do you think it is better to erase the whole windows partition and reinstall it?
Kind regards.

Hi Karina,
Hi Karina,
Not sure where you read this about needing 128 gb on Windows. I think you could get away with much less.
The first question that comes to mind is how much free space do you have available on that Windows partition? If it's getting anywhere near full, you can try to clear up free space. Windows actually has a free tool to help do this, and can remove old versions of Windows that stay on the computer until you specifically delete them. You might try that. If that does not help, don't zap everything just yet. Try downloading the Windows 10 upgrade assistant. It's a separate program from Windows Update. Specifically, it is what was used to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 to 10, but in a pinch has also helped me go from one version of 10 to another.
I last used Bootcamp on an old macbook pro from 2012, which unfortunately took a tumble and had major body damage, plus issues with the drive, so pretty much a total loss. But, I hope to order my new 2020 Air as soon as my stimulous check hits my bank account. Once that happens, I will probably be setting up Bootcamp also, and if you haven't had any luck, I may be able to help more then. But for now, I'm just going off of memory.
I can say I've usually kept my Windows partition to about 50 gb, and not had problems with updates and such. I just had to go and free up space every now and then. Then again, my Windows use is minimal, just for a few programs to do remote broadcasting on my online radio station. Everything else will be done on the mac. If you find yourself using Windows more than Mac OS, then the 128 gb might make more sense for you.
what is the error your getting?
hello,
firstly, what is the arror your getting when you try to install windows updates? I install a get many of them, as I am a Windows Insider on the fast ring. a while ago, an update wouldn't install and it told me I had to update graphics drivers. I didn't really know where to go to do that, eventually I found the intel support assistant and then it went without a hitch. the drivers took six manual restarts to install, but after all that, windos updates again installed properly. as most macs have Intel Graphics cards, download the intel support assistant. it works in the new edge, which might be the default now. it cans your hardware and tells you what you need. offers to download it, and install it. this assistant only works on the Windows 10 side. if you have any questions, send me an email at daniel.angus.macdonald@gmail.com
hope it all works out,
Daniel
Hi Justin
Hello and thank you very much for the suggestions; regarding the 128 bg partition thing, I saw it here and not just once but maybe few more times, that is why I choosed a 256 macBook lol.
I will try the thing of the windows 10 update assistant, and will let you know if it worked.
Thanks Daniel
Well I will try to translate the messages I get from Spanish to English
First once in the windows update panel it says something like: There are important quality and security updates needed".
Then looking for the suggested updates, I have these three ones: An cumulative update for windows version 1909 from April 2020; an cumulative update for Microsoft net framework 3.5 and 4.8 from february 2020; and an security update for adobe flash player.
Then I have a "Install now button" and when I hit it the download starts in the case of the cumulative update for windows 1909, but then all the updates stop and this error appears in the line of the security update for adobe flash player "instalation error: 0x800700c1, and they return to their original status.
Also I usually complete the download of the cumulative update for windows 1909, while installing it, I get another error saying that maybe there is an error on the instalation file and that I can try installing it later and the error code is "0x80073712"
that is strange
I never got those kinds of arrors when I installed any windows update. maybe your ISO coruped when a surtain windows update was installed. I'd upgrade your graphics drivers to see if it makes a differents.

If the 128 gb is working well
If the 128 gb is working well for you, then there's no need to change it. But if you find yourself not needing quite as much space on the Windows side, and you do eventually have to do a reinstall, you can feel free to downsize a bit.
I hope to have mine soon so should be able to help more. Also, I use all my devices in Spanish. I am fluent, and have used all my tech in Spanish for years. It's litterally the first thing I change. So if it ever gives you something you don't quite know how to translate, I can still probably help.
I am curious though as to how well Windows performs on your machine, as the 10th gen i3 that is in the one I want to buy is comparable to the i5 in your 2019 air. Does Windows run well on it, or is it slow? Also, have you found a good way to switch back and forth between the new operating systems? Classic macs had that boot sound, and so you knew when to hold down the option key to bring up the boot menu and could change with arrows. But now without that boot sound, I would imagine it would be hard to know when to do it. It would be nice if they would put special options in the shutdown menus of each. While in mac, an option that says "restart in Windows," and when in Windows, an option to restart in Mac Os.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, but it was nice to find someone with a similar machine to the one I plan on getting, so worth asking these questions.
Karina,
Karina,
I used to rock one of those cheapo Chinese tablet pcs. I forget the exact brand right now, but it was one of those that only came with 4 gb ram and a 64 gb ssd. Windows update used to give me fits on that thing all the time, and I was always having to use the tool to free up space. That usually resolved my problems. Though having all up to date drivers is always a good thing too, but I wonder if it could be due to the amount of space left on the partition. That's where I always had issues.
My first instinct is to do a quick google search of that error message, and here's what I found. It makes mention of using the mouse a lot, but you can easilly do all that with the keyboard.
If you receive Windows Update error 0x80073712 or 80073712, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Windows has troubleshooting tools that can help you address this problem. Follow the steps below to use these tools.
Method 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
1.
Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Troubleshooting in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update.
2.
Run the troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.
Method 2: Run the DISM tool
1.
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
2.
Enter command prompt in the search box.
3.
In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
4.
In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
5.
To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
6.
Run Windows Update again.
Method 3: Refresh your PC
•
For information about how to do this, go to How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC.
`~`
80070003
Click Start (Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.)
Type: cmd
Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'
Type: net stop wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
Hit Enter
Type: net start wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: exit
Hit Enter
Restart once it's finished running and see if the return code still appears when checking for updates.
Please give all these a try. Let us know if anything here helps. :)
boot sound
well actually you can make return that sound from command line, you can see guyde here somewhere i forgot where it is, or i would sent link
That's okay. I'll find it.
That's okay. I'll find it. Google is my friend. lol I just didn't think that was even possible. Thanks for the tip. :)
switching between operating systems in macOS Catalina
hello all,
you can once again switch between Windows and macos Catalina, as now their is an APFS driver. because of the new filesystem, it was not possible to switch between windows and macos . now, as of Bootcamp 6.1, this issue is fixt. you need this update to have the APFS driver, which you have to install in Windows through Apple Software Update. with it applied, switching works just as it did in macos Sierra and earlier.
I guess I'm confused. How do
I guess I'm confused. How do you mean? On my old Macbook pro from 2012, there was never a super easy way to do it that I knew of from within either os. Only by holding down option at boot and using the arrow keys, but even then you couldn't be 100% sure which you were gunna get. So if I'm missing something please fill me in, as it has also been a few years since I've had a mac, so I'm sure things have had to change somewhat.
switching
hello Justin,
in your 2012 mac, rhwie should be a bootcamp control on tpannal he windows side of things. this used to give you the ability to switch between macos and windows from windows. in macos high sierra spple change the filesystem, and they did not make a windows driver for it. now, in Catalina, this functionality is back as it was before. on the macos side, go to system preferences>startup disk to switch from mac to windows.

Daniel
Hmmm, I never knew that. Even
Hmmm, I never knew that. Even so, it would be awesome to have something a little more simple on both sides, that doesn't require going in to system preferences or settings, like a shortcut in the menu bar or desktop. Know of any way of pulling that off?
their is a way in windows
so that option is in the system tray in windows, in the bootcamp menu icon. on the mac, the only is to go into system preferences.

To Justin
Hi Justin, sorry for my delay answering your questions, but I think most of them have been already answered by someone else.
First, the space in disk is not a problem, I think I have like 90 gb of free space in windows, but I could have left more free space for macOS because there I just have like 40 gb.
Second, I will try some of the other options suggested by you and Daniel.
Third, it is surprising to know you use also all your devises in Spanish, that is very rare to encounter around here. In fact I have a lot of questions for you once you get a new mac, because I have a lot of questions regarding shortcuts in safari that are not the same if your keyboard is in Spanish. In fact if someday you can take a look to this post https://www.applevis.com/guides/getting-started-safari-macos I wrote an entry asking some questions, and maybe you can help me with them.
Fourth, I have return the starting chime to the mac by the command someone posted somewhere here, and as far as I have done this, switching from macOS to windows is easier but not always reliable as there is no way to know which option is selected. The only way to do it is to rely on your memory of which operative system did you use for the last time.
Kind regards.
