Apple Watch turning on Screen on Tap Versus Taptic Time

watchOS and Apple Watch Apps

Hi all,

I don't know if this post is a duplicate. I thought I had sent this already but couldn't find it on the forum or in my recent posts.

On the Apple Watch with WatchOS 6, I can't seem to find where to disable turning on the screen when I tap it. I was hoping to make it easier to use taptic time. If I don't tap the screen at just the right speed, it just turns on the screen and doesn't give me the vibrations. Anyone know a way to disable the screen turning on with tapping or another way to deal with the taptic feedback reliability issue?

Thanks in advance.

Exact same problem. I Even with the right double tap speed it rarely works.

I'm able to get taptic time most of the time I intend to these days, but not always and I'm sure there is a degree of inconsistency there. It's a bit annoying in environments where I really do not want my watch talking but want to keep track of the time. in situtations like that I often end up tapping the screen three times just to be safe, but that's not so useful if you've lost track of the hours.

Generally speaking, I'm finding the screen a lot more sensitive since upgrading to Watch OS 6.01 incidentally. My sighted partner is finding the same so that's not a Voiceover issue, it would seem.

For me in my series 5 it is to sensitive. If my watch touch the couch it does the haptic time.

As of watch os6 you can now under clock you can find taptic time to then preform it you hold 2 fingers on the screen. I think this for sighted folks because it doesn't work with vo on for me. However if you toggle off VO you can do this so for example in meetings where you don't want it talking this might be the best of both worlds.

I actually didn't realize that was there. I didn't see it when I did the update. I have a series 3 though.

This problem, I can see, is known and common, so I'll try reporting and suggesting a fix. Sure appreciate everyone's input here. If anyone figures out a solution that doesn't involve turning off voiceover or knows how to set the watch not to turn on the screen on a single tap, would you please let us know?

If one turns off Voiceover, it speaks to indicate it's being turned off. Turning it back on also makes it speak. Plus, there's the amount of time it takes to check the time in combination with the several seconds it takes to perform the on and off actions. If someone wants to check the time with discretion and alacrity, it's not convenient to have to turn off VO and then turn it back on. This might be okay to do for the time it takes to attend a meeting, but for a quick, discreet check, not so much. No, it's not a huge deal, and it's not a true bug either to have to turn off the screen reader to use the tap and hold option. It is, however, an angle that the VO developers may not have considered and thus worth suggesting as a feature/improvement. It would provide more flexibility and convenience for varying scenarios.

If I have my rist away from me or in my lab and if I tap with one finger 2 times I get the haptic time. Although is not consistent. Helps that I set haptic for the hour along with chime. This helps if I do not want to have VO to tell me the time.
