True that, how ever there are a lot of things still very much broken in the app A lot is fixed, but a lot needs to be improved. I've personally seen smaller companies do better with more complex apps then the fb app and also for the sighted. I'm not trying to be a crank, I'm just stating my observations which are very opinionated.

Hello Mary, Well, then. Please give me the complete detail list of all of the things that are broken. I would be more than happy to pass tis along to them. If we do not let them know about it. They will not know. Besides the three you have mentioned. Which I'm not sure what you mean again about #2 you have stated. So please help me understand so I can pass this along to them. We also know about the Camera thing that bugs you but this appears to be in a lot of other apps. I don't think this is a Facebook specific problem. So if you don't mind. I would greatly appreciate if you could give me this tons of VoiceOver problems so I can get this off to the team. I know they would greatly appreciate it. I do have a lot of hope for them. As they do stay in contact with me and are always seeking for more information and I am seeing results. So any information that people can give me the better! Thanks.

Sorry for the pun. I'm really not interested Jeff's status who posted eight hours ago, shared with friends, god I want a drink of water. For some reason this is really annoying to me. Also on the mac anyway they broke how you mention people. When I asked them before, I had said if you mention @Jen, and you have one Jen, it works just fine, the Mac speaks it. However, if you have more then one person by the same name, it's not read when you're trying to select the right person. Now when you mention someone, you don't hear anything when you pusht he space bar. Like if i mention Jen smith, and she was the first selection, when you pressed tab it would say smith as you hit space. yes, toonhead accessibility does try to get back to you. Those are my inital thoughts of facebook. sorry for the Mac tangent but it's also relivent as I use the main site exclusively. Oh, one more theng: has anyone noticed voice over say clear? I can't explain where it is, but it will say clear, and you can't do anything to it. You can't double tap it or anything.

Mary, With little information being available about Facebook's development process, it is impossible to know what their organizational structure for app development is. In a smaller company, the same developers who write the code for the main app are likely the ones implementing the accessibility support. However, given the complexity of the Facebook platform, I would be very surprised if each version of the app did not go through several different stages of development/testing--and just as many product teams. It is also worth considering that the Facebook Accessibility Team is working on accessibility on all of the other Facebook platforms--web, mobile, Android, etc. I'm just glad that Facebook has a team that is actively interested in improving the accessibility experience, because so many other large companies just do not care. If the app has a few accessibility bugs, at least I know they are actively being worked on.

By KE7ZUM on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:30

I did an mp3 file showing all the thing s that work and down't work in the app starting with the things that don't work. I'll email it to them and we'll see what happens.

good luck.

By sechaba on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:30

I would like to agree with Michael Hansen that overall, the FB team is giving it their best to ensure accessibility. For a company which has sighted people as their major profit drivers, FB is doing relatively well.

Why is it when you update your fb status it doesn't say "sent from IOS" at the end except when you update your status through Siri?

By Toonhead on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:30

Just wanna thank everyone for the encouraging words that yes, FB access really is listening. I don't use facebook a lot on my phone but when I do I like for it to work in the best way, so while a lot is still broken I think we should focus on what's been fixed and at least say thank you for their hard work. They certainly seem to be showing a commitment so we should say thank you!

By Andrew on Friday, March 21, 2014 - 17:30

Hello, For the individual who is asking about the "sent via IOS" feature. The reason that FB status is read sent via IOS, is because individuals are only using siri to post their status. If you do not see, or hear, the "sent via IOS" on an individuals status, it is because they used the FB app, or another app, which does not use SIRI to send the status. This is the difference. We no longer have the FB and Twitter widgets in the notification center anymore either and this was always done with the "sent via IOS" tag as well. HTH -Andrew-

While I do agree some stuff has been fixed, some stuff is still broken. here is what I mean.

I'll have to as I stated in another comment try the iOS thing as I did not think you could update your status on fb via siri. Hmm. I love learning things.

By Katrine on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

Hi all,
I just started using the Facebook IOS app today (before I used the mobile website). I have a few problems and I'm not sure if it's me or if it's accessibility issues. Please could someone let me know:
1. I often get thrown back to the top of the page while browsing my News Feed. I think this is an accessibility issue, as is the fact that Facebook doesn't always read the name of a person in News Feed, and I have to swipe back and forth for it to repeat.
2. A really important problem is that I don't seem to be able to view comments from my News Feed. Facebook says "2 likes, 2 comments". If I want to read those comments what do I do?? Dubble tapping with one finger just makes VO say "selected". Now, what does that mean? Tapping with two fingers doesn't seem to work either. Or I get taken to a page where I can block the person, which is cool, but I just wanted to read the comments!
3. How do I open a link that someone shares in News Feed?
These are rather big issues for me, I hope someone can help, thanks!

Facebook version 10.0 is now available:

"What's New in Version 10.0

• Review what your post will look like and choose whether to remove any suggested links before sharing what you’re reading, watching or listening to
• Create posts even when your connection is weak or you’re in airplane mode, and they’ll be shared once your connection gets strong enough
• Improvements to make News Feed load faster, especially on older phones and tablets"

By Callum Stoneman on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

On the latest version, I can't seem to find a way to change the order of the posts. It starts on top stories, and I normally have it on most recent but now I can't seem to change it.

By Andrew on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

I'mSorry that I cannot be of more help currently, but I noticed this aspect too! Imore.com has an article posted that tells you how to change this, hop on over to their website and check it out. I would post the link, but I'm not in a position to do this currently. -Andrew-

Follow the steps below. Source: iMore

  1. Launch Facebook for iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap the More tab at the bottom right
  3. Scroll down to the Feeds section (which includes Close Friends tab)
  4. Tap the > to the right off Feeds to expand the section
  5. Tap on Most Recent

VoiceOver users will find that double-tapping on the "Feeds" heading will expand the list of available feeds. From there, one can just double-tap on a feed and everything works as expected.

Michael, the problem with using the news feed heading is it doesn't show up on mine. What happens is, the first time I use it after updating, the heading is there, but then the next time you open it up it goes and "the's no way of getting it back. This happened about 2 versions ago, and the same thing happens after re-installing the app. It's a very strange problem. Do you think restoring my phone would help?

By Michael Hansen on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

Hi Callum,

Are you trying to access the different feeds under the "More" tab at the bottom right corner of the screen? That's where you want to go. In the "More" tab, swipe down until you get to the "Feeds" heading and double-tap. While oiceOver gives no indication that the feed list was expanded, it does expand.

In regards to whether a restore of your phone would help with this issue...the short answer is, "Probably not." In any event, it isn't anything I would recommend as a solution to this particular problem. <Smile>

In reply to by Michael Hansen

I was accessing it from the news feed tab at the bottom left. I've found it now though, thanks very much :)

By Allen Sale on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

I'd be patient. It is a slightly tedious process now but there is some logic to it. Still, enough users may complain with this one since people liked the convenience of changing the feed on the main news feed tab.

By jay on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

Hi.

I was wondering how someone would be able to turn off app requests and games. For example, a lot of times I'll get notifications that say something like "Crystal Roen invited you to play Pet Rescu Sogga." Another one is "Kathy Coffin sent you a request in Candy Crush Sogga." Any help would be great. Thanks.

Jay

By sockhopsinger on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 - 17:30

Go to the More tab on the bottom of the App. Scroll all the way down to Settings, then go to Notifications. Under that, go to Push Notifications. Towards the bottom are the different app notifications. Uncheck the ones you don't want.

In the latest version of the Facwebook app, how does one now get to alternative news feeds such as various friends lists? It no longer appears that such an option is at the top of the main page.

By Michael Hansen on Saturday, June 21, 2014 - 17:30

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Hello Misty,

To find alternative feeds, such as the Most Recent feed, do the following:
1. Open the Facebook app.
2. At the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, double-tap on the "More" button.
3. Flick through the list until you hear "Feeds Heading." Note: It is quite a way down the list.
4. It appears as though in Facebook 11.0 the Most Recent feed item is automatically displayed if you flick past the "Feeds" heading. If you wish to view other feeds, such as Close Friends, double-tap on the feeds heading.

Yuck! Is that the same way sighties have to get to alternate feeds now? In either case, that is totally too many clicks IMO and much more inconvenient than before...

By KE7ZUM on Monday, July 21, 2014 - 17:30

Yeah it still is and frankly for e it's a bit more streamlined. I personally don't mind it at all. give it a chance instead of not giving it a chance. and yes that is how the sighted do get to the most recent as well.

By Maya on Monday, July 21, 2014 - 17:30

Hello.
I am getting Facebook notifications from my close friends and from groups, some of them I get only by e-mail and I also have push notifications enabled for a few groups, so I am notified by my Iphone.
Is it also possible to get notifications from pages (not groups but pades) I like?
I am liking quite a few pages and there are some, let's say quite important pages I would like to follow very closely and I do not want to miss any single post.
As many of you know, it is quite difficult to go through Facebook posts and track all of them as they are not sorted in order like it is, for example, on Twitter.
If there is someone knowing how to get it sorted, please, let me know.
Your help will be very much appreciated.
Thank you for your help in advance.

By KE7ZUM on Monday, July 21, 2014 - 17:30

do this in notifications under facebook settings. there soudl be one for pages.

Good luck.

Hello,
Can notifications for pages I like be set up on either the the Face book mobile site, or the face book iOS app? Thank you.

This really baffles me in how they do version numbers. This is like the second or third time they have jump a whole number on the version with very minor update to the app. How strange.

What's New in Version 12.0

• Improvements for reliability and speed

Well, for that matter, Version 12.1 is also out. Same description as the previous comment for Version 12.0.

By Kirsten Edmondson on Thursday, August 21, 2014 - 17:30

I have just done an update which I presume came out today. When I went into the notifications tab there was repetition of my notifications. IE. it said each new notification twice as I swiped right through the list. I have reported this to Facebook.

By Misty Dawn on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 - 17:30

All right, it seems, once again, that Facebook has hidden the ability to access particular Friends Lists. For instance, I hae a particular list containing only friends from my hometown.

So, how does one accessibly limit one's news feed to specific Friends Lists?

For those who haven't updated to Facebook version 22.0 yet, reports from Twitter and other sources indicate that this latest version has introduced an issue in the News Feed area where users' names are spoken twice before the story is read.

By Usman on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 - 17:30

I really hate how they stopped being specific about what changes that wer made to the update.

By Daniel on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 - 17:30

Thanks Michael for reporting this. I can confirm the bug here too. So how can we let the Facebook accessibility team know about this bug? Yeah, I know what you mean Usman. I use to look forward to learning the what's new log and they say they will highlight what's new in the app. Well then the question becomes: how can we access the what's new if it is as they say present in the app? Just my thoughts.

By Toonhead on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 - 17:30

Hi. I tweeted @FBAccess on twitter today and let them know about the latest bug with VoiceOver. I didn't receive any kind of a response, but that doesn't mean they didn't see it, I sure hope they did.

By sockhopsinger on Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 17:30

I don't know what the address is, but you might consider looking for that. I haven't noticed this bug. Also, you used to be able to go to facebook.com/accessibility and be able to find the link there.

By Usman on Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 17:30

Not sure if I'm the only one who's had this, but when swiping through my news feed, voiceover continuously announces "network error". Has anyone else seen this?

By sechaba on Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 17:30

In reply to by AnonyMouse

It is no longer possible to mention people who are members of a certain group with Facebook and the latest version. I am not sure if it is the voice over problem or the problem lies with the updated version of IOS. I can get other members with similar names who are not in a group but not the members of the group on which I am making comments. Any similar experience?

By Soupy on Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 17:30

According to the monthly update provided by the Facebook Accessibility Team, these are the changes made to their iOS apps during January:

“We improved accessibility of the photo/video edit screens, photo editing tools and sharing photo status updates in the Instagram iOS app. We improved the read back of tab buttons such as “Photos”, “People”, the “News” tab and the main feed and the “Suggestions for you” headers in the Instagram app. We improved the accessibility of the read more popover button in the audience picker, the edit cover photo flow and the privacy explanation screens in our iOS app. We improved the tagging experience and the associated Done and Cancel buttons in the Instagram app. We added a label to the expand(…) button the Pages app. We improved the swipe interaction of tagging people in status updates in our iOS app. We fixed a recent regression where names were announced twice in news stories in our iOS app.”

With Facebook no longer providing release notes with updates, I thought that this was useful to know.

The complete post is at: https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-accessibility/january-2015-monthly-update/861619830548410

By Callum Stoneman on Saturday, February 21, 2015 - 17:30

I'm currently running version 24.0 which came out on 12 February. The release notes are the same so I won't post them, but something I've noticed is it's crashing a lot more often when I try look through the newsfeed. It seems to not let me get past certain stories no matter whether I flick past them or scroll with 3 fingers. And yes, I've done all the methods, closing it from the app switcher, restarting my phone all that.
I think this might be VO related but I'm not sure, I did check the app store reviews but as usual so many people are reporting so many different problems lol.

Anyone else having this?

By Misty Dawn on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 - 17:30

Has anyone been able, when making an FB post, to select the "Custom" option and to exclude and/or include individual people from your Friends list? I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Could someone help, please, if you've been able to figure it out?

By KE7ZUM on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 - 17:30

Hello. Just select the people you want to send the post to. This worked a few weeks ago when I did this.
