Great app. You can listen to lost of stations from around the world, as well as on the Internet. Thanks.

HOw does this app compare to OoTunes?

By Unregistered User (not verified) on Friday, October 21, 2011 - 19:01

The latest update (version 2.1) has added some issues to the interface that make the user experience less pleasurable for us VoiceOver users.

Now, when viewing a list of channels (either your presets or the directory) there are page elements beside each item in the list that are recognized by VoiceOver as unlabelled buttons. Double-tapping on any of these appears to do the same as tapping on the station name itself.

Also, when browsing these lists, some station names are read by VoiceOver as: "this station only offers one stream StationName".

The app itself remains fully usable with VoiceOver, but I do find the issues mentioned above annoying enough to make me think about switching to another app.

Agree with above comment. Made it a bit more annoying. Not all Label are clearly Label anymore. Still usable but not as friendly as it was. Very disappointing.

I switched to OOTunes awhile ago, simply because Tunein Radio now doesn't have the ability to broadcast many of the stations I want to listen to. Stations owned by clear Channel and CBS all seemed to be blocked. Not a big deal in terms of music, but it can be if one wants to listen to sporting events on these stations.

By Zuhair Mahmoud on Friday, October 21, 2011 - 19:01

Each of the unlabeled buttons next to the station name represent a stream, though it would have been nice if they were labeled and only appeared upon request, as intended for a sighted user. I have no doubt the developers will oblige if told -- they seem pretty responsive.

By David Goodwin on Monday, November 21, 2011 - 19:01

The unlabelled buttons that indicated alternative streams have been removed in the latest update.

Among the other changes is the addition of a mute button on the playback screen. This button, labelled as 'Speaker', doesn't simply mute output from the stream, bur will zero the sound volume on your iDevice. Obviously this means that VoiceOver will also be silenced. The easiest way to get sound back is by using the volume up button on the side of your iDevice.

Wanted to pass this along to you all. This morning there is an article from AppAdvice with the following statement. TuneIn Radio Pro Disappears From The App Store Popular Internet radio app, TuneIn Radio Pro, has disappeared from the App Store. We think Apple might have pulled the the app due to its recording functionality which allowed users to easily pirate songs or any other copyrighted material that plays on the radio. This is also a feature not available in the free version of the app, which, has not been removed from the App Store. TuneIn Radio Pro had an average four star rating with over 199 reviews and boasted an impressive 50,000 radio stations for streaming. It even received our highest recommendation in the AM/FM Radio Apps and Best Radio Apps, AppGuides. We are still investigating the matter and will keep you posted when we hear more. The article can be found here: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2012/01/tunein-radio-pro-disappears-from-the-app-store

It has returned to iTunes. No words in why it went down nor any words why it has returned?! Regardless, it is now back. This is still my #1 choice in this kind of app.

In the latest version it might appear that the search facility has gone from the Browse tab, as VoiceOver does not find it if you flick through the contents of that page. However, it is still there, but you will need to explore the screen with your finger to find it. It's located directly below the top menu bar, so a tap with your finger about 1cm below the status bar should find it. Unfortunately, the problems don't end here. Once on the search page, VoiceOver cannot find the text field or the cancel button. So, you have to type something and then hit the search button. Once some search results are displayed, you can access those or the main navigation tabs along the bottom on the screen.
Hey all, just moved Tune In the free one to my main page to take over for WCBS NY which recently updated to an app that is mostly accessible but now an awful app. They got rid of the radio news stations which was my favorite part of the app. Was playing around with Tune In last night, and absolutely love it but am intrigued by the earlier comments about OOTunes. I primarily listen to talk radio and sports, and would love to hear if OOTunes is even better, the description of OOtunes in the app store sounds fantstic, and I am going to see if there is a review of it here, but would love to hear from people who have used both and what they prefer. Thanks
Version 2.8 was released in the app store today. Unfortunately, the search box does still not show up when flicking around the browse tab, but it cann still be found at the top. What's New in Version 2.8 • Love that song? You can now easily buy it by tapping the iTunes button on the Now Playing screen. • Love that station or artist? Tap the heart icon to add it to your Favorites, accessible on any device with a free TuneIn account. (Existing TuneIn listeners: this feature used to be called "Presets.").

By Kevan on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 - 19:01

Version 2.8 now fails to show the options button for now playing stations, at least in the Standard app. This button unhides many options including choosing different streams for a station, and setting alarms / sleep timers.
I just launched the app and played a station, and I also cannot find the options button anywhere. I even tried tapping in the middle of the screen. It seems that TuneIn is breaking something with each new version of their app. In addition, I am very disappointed with their website using a windows computer. I find myself unable to stream stations anymore. I click on the listen button and it takes me to the stations info page. Even on that page there is not a listen button. I do not recommend that anybody upgrade to version 2.8 if they rely on changing the various streams, setting the alarm clock, or even viewing a playlist.
Hello, After reading app reviews of TuneIn Radio Pro, TuneIn apparently removed the options button for the sighted people as well. There is no longer an alarm clock, or the ability to change the streams to a different quality. A lot of people do not like the new version 2.8. I also notice that the stations buffer a lot, or they take longer to load. In addition, you are not able to listen to Cumulus Media stations in the United States. Now you must listen to them with iHeart Radio, which in my opinion, iHeart Radio's stream quality sucks!
Yes I just noticed that you can no longer stream Cumulus stations. This means that both Cumulus and Clear Channel stations are now unavailable through this app. In addition to IHeartRadio's quality issues, I don't remember it being very accessible. Guess I'll go back to using ooTunes.

Hello, iHeart Radio is quite accessible with VoiceOver. I am able to listen to and create stations. People probably think it is not accessible because every button says inactive after it, but all buttons work.
I have contacted tune in radio. I explained how the new changes made the app harder to use. I will let you know what they say.
I have also just emailed the developers, and explained how removing the options button was a bad idea, I also explained about the bug with the search box.

Some good news. The Options is back on the Now Playing tab. Now for the bad news. The Search is still not being recognized. What's New in Version 2.8.1 • Love that song? You can now easily buy it by tapping the iTunes button on the Now Playing screen. • Love that station or artist? Tap the heart icon to add it to your Favorites, accessible on any device with a free TuneIn account. (Existing TuneIn listeners: this feature used to be called "Presets.") Still on iOS 3? This update requires iOS 4 and above. Upgrading iOS has to be done on your computer.
I ran across the search problem last week. I hadn't searched since last football season. I assumed it might have been an iOS 6 problem and emailed the support staff at Tunein. Unfortunately, I suggested the problem might have been iOS 6 in my email to them. Their response said that it was a "third party issue" and that i should contact the manufacturer. I clarified the issue as a long standing issue with the app, not the iOS system. Hopefully they see fit to fix this. Perhaps this is a candidate for a Campaign of the Month.

By peter on Sunday, October 21, 2012 - 19:01

This is a great app and very useable with VoiceOver. However, a problem was introduced in the latest update: VoiceOver is no longer able to read the hours/minutes when trying to set the alarm. This used to work fine with VoiceOver in the previous version (prior to IOS6) and I had no problems setting an alarm. However, the VoiceOver user cannot set alarms in this latest version. I am hopeful that the developers can quickly rectify this problem. I've written a note to their support folks describing the issue. We'll see what happens. Otherwise it is a great and very useable app. --Pete

Must admit there are a lot of new nice features now included which I like very much. However, there is still no Search in the Browse tab! Still disappointed. The easy shortcut for the Search is to double tap on the Car Mode found in the Browse tab located in the upper left corner. In the Car Mode there is a Search which you can use. Other than this one minor problem it is still my favorite Radio app to use.

Oh yes, the Search now has the Cancel button and it does work just fine. However, the Alarm page still doesn't work. You still can't read the Alarm Times.

What's New in Version 2.9

• We've improved our player to bring the world's music, sports and news to you faster.
• You can now share your favorite stations with your friends more easily through Facebook (iOS 6 only).
• Album artwork and station info now display on your locked screen so you can quickly and easily see what's playing after your phone has gone to sleep.
• Have an iPhone 5? TuneIn now fills your entire screen.
• Get into the season! Enjoy the holidays with hundreds of Halloween and Christmas stations.
• Sports fans, get your game on with all post-season baseball games (including the World Series) and many college bowl games.

By peter on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

I wrote to Tune-In support several weeks ago about the issue of not being able to set alarms using voiceOver in the latest version. One used to be able to do this using VoiceOver in previous releases. The support team wrote back: " Thank you for contacting us regarding this issue. We are aware of this problem and hope to have this feature fixed in a future release. I apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate your support of TuneIn!" Now I just updated to the latest version today, October 30, 2012, and the same problem still exists - One still can't set alarms using VoiceOver. One good change, you don't have to get into "Car Mode" in order to see the Options button under which you can set alarms and sleep timers. Unfortunately, in this new version there are several other buttons that are now not labled, making this app a bit more difficult to use with VoiceOver. Well, sometimes its one step forward and two steps backward when it comes to accessibility. too bad, this is otherwise a great app. --Pete

Given that several key features like alarms and searching from the browse screen no longer work, is this app still worthy of inclusion in the Hall of Fame? If I were a new user looking at the listing of apps in the HOF, I'd think this was a great app and right now, it's not. Many of us have written the developer and yet no fixes have been forthcoming. Personally, I do not think it belongs in the HOF, and I think it does a disservice to other HOF apps, and to potential purchasers to leave its listing without at least a footnote indicating that it is currently not the app it once was.
Is anybody else's version 2.9 a bust? I just updated, and it now plays for perhaps five minutes then exits. No fair!

Yes, I updated to version 2.9 yesterday. I have not experienced the drop out you report. The drop outs you are experiencing may be due to degraded infra-structure of internet connections today from the large storm that caused about 8,000,000 people to lose power today. In fact, I had trouble with my GMail IMap account (but not other e-mail accounts) all day long. Try again in a few days when services are (hopefully) put back in order. --Pete

By Rob on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

hi sheri, i and another friend had the selfsame problem, we discovered that if you uninstall and reinstall the app it seems to cure this. however you obviously will lose any recordings you might have if you do that. this was a real frustration to me and something i really didn't want to do as it now means i've lost the recording i had of all the medals team gb won in the olympics, shouldn't have to do it but there you are. originally i just downloaded the free version of the app but eventually realised as a last resort if i wanted to fix it this is what i have to do. as for car mode, i'd imagine it's to make tunein easier to use for drivers? aparrently the buttons are bigger or something, rob.
Hi all, Has anyone else noticed that tune-in have removed the in app web browser in the latest virsion? I know there used to be a setting for it in settings, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.
Oh, I was afraid of that: I really (REALLY!) was hoping there was another way besides the dreaded re-install. I wish there were a way to export the recordings I have. Blast! I'd been thinking of exporting those recordings as something I'd get to ... later, but I guess it's now or never at this point with sad emphasis on the NEVER. Maybe, it's time to jump ship to a radio app with an export function before this happens again. Thanks, guys.

I recorded some audio shows, and some songs I like from different stations. For some reason, the new update says when I double-tap on a recording, it says: "Please wait for the recordings to be updated. It will take a few minutes." I waited for about fifteen minutes, and my recordigngs were corrupted. I know I can rerecord "Abiding Radio Kids" and "Subsonic Radio request" easily, but as far as other stations, I can't rerecord them because of not knowing the song title, or not playing a segment again. I only did the update on my phone, not on my laptop computer. So, did this happen to you guys? Is there any way I can uninstall from my phone, and reinstall from my laptop to my iPhone? I don't know if I will have the recordings back from the older update that I did a backup on my laptop? Thanks.

By captianbubble on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

Luckily I have my favorites back, but my recordings are permenantly deleted. So, I can rerecord the "Abiding Radio Kids" and "Subsonic Radio Request" Now I am not sure, how am I going to rerecord my other stations? Maybe a scavenger hunt?

Umm, you would think going from v2.9 to v3.0 would be a major upgrade? Well, it only appears to be have been a minor update mostly trying to squash the many bugs people are having.

What is worse is that as I am trying to stay positive about waiting on the developer in fixing the several Voice Over problems is still not being fixed. This isnow like the 3rd or 4th update so far and no fix for the Search nor the Alarm Clock.

I know there has been several that have reported the issues to the developer. So they are aware of it.

I am also starting to question if this is Hall of Fame worthy anymore? Unfortunetly, they have made many updates to resolved our issues but is not being addressed. So to me in being part of the Hall of Fame is that the developers have made great stride in making their apps accessible. Sadly, after waiting for several months now which is ample of time to have fix our issues. I have not seen going above and beyond of doing that in what I would consider being Hall of Fame quality. So I'm beginning to wane with the above commenter of asking if this is Hall of Fame worthy anymore?

What's New in Version 3.0

• Fixed playback issues
• Fixed recordings update

By Toonhead on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

In reply to by AnonyMouse

Thanks for the heads up, I won't update to 3.0 because of this. I don't really make use of the features being fixed, plus as far as I can tell, I don't have a version that exhibits the bug where the audio cuts out when VoiceOver is enabled.

By DPinWI on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

In reply to by AnonyMouse

I'm glad I'm not the only one beginning to question whether this app still belongs in the Hall of Fame. I'm very disappointed to see the Search and Clock features are still broken. When I saw it was a full version number change, I really thought my wait might have been worth it. I've considered getting ooTunes but wasn't sure since it hasn't been updated in quite a while. Then again, "IF it isn't broken, don't break it," should be the mantra of more developers.

I'm also disappointed the 3.0 wasn't any kind of major improvement... updating did fix my immediate problem: the buggy 2.9 I downloaded.. . But, now I guess I'm shopping for a replacement. I don't suppose losing the Hall of Fame status will really impact the developer that much: but we can hope!

By Elena Brescacin on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 19:01

hi, I wrote to developers for the problems listed here plus another: once it was possible to swipe while listening to a station, to find similar stations. flicking 3 fingers right or left, on the iPhone (never on iPad) now, it's no longer possible they answered me they are aware of the problem but that iOS6 development gives more complications to fix these problems don't know what they mean but, to translate a quote from my country, "if you want, you can" I suppose a campaign is quite urgent but I do not trust this matter will be solved soon, I hope for next branch, 3.1.x rather then 3.0.x. I cannot hide I'm very, very angry

Before you ask. No none of the accessibility issues have been addressed in this new update. However, it does appear that the developer of TuneIn Radio has been very busy in fixing a lot of bugs. Also, added a new feature.

Now hopefully, they will have time to fix some of the accessibility issues now. :P

What's New in Version 3.1

Improved:
• Thanks, loyal TuneIn listeners, for helping us identify and fix issues with the last release of TuneIn Radio. This version features numerous fixes, all outlined below. Please continue to help us make TuneIn better by emailing support@tunein.com with any issues (and make sure to include the specific station you're trying to listen to).
• Improved playing experience for many stations and podcasts, including better "seek" ability for long podcasts.
• Fixed playing experience when TuneIn is interrupted by other apps.
• Fixed instances of stuttering during play experience.
• TuneIn now features more high-resolution album artwork.
• Returned the ability to schedule recordings for custom URLs.

New:
• Most college football bowl games, including the National Championship Game, are available. Just browse under “Sports” during game time.

Well, I am sorry to report that none of the accessibility issues we have had since August is still not fixed. The developers are aware of the problems. So after four months of many updates and a major rlease. We are still able to perform certian functions.

What's New in Version 3.3

New:
• Our iPad listeners will enjoy a brand new design!
• TuneIn will pick up right where you left off when you resume listening to your most recent recording or podcast.
• Listen to 24 college football bowl games - visit http://s.tunein.com/bowlgames to learn more.

Improved:
• We've improved streaming stability for a number of formats.

I've noticed that when using tunein radio, the audio sputters and pauses every few seconds when swiping through the iphone. This isn't so much an accessibility issue as much as it seems like a resources issue. When voiceover is off, tunein radio has no problem at all and sighted users can use the app, put it in the background, and utilize other phone features with no sputtering audio. Its annoying actually and does go away when a user simply doesn't use the phone when listening, but sometimes, theres a need to listen and/or check emails, or texts, or look information up.
Hi, i just wrote on the applevis forum on section "accessibility advocacy" about tune in radio's latest version but I try to explain it here too: all buttons on iPad version seem to be labelled except for one called "footer volume icon", that mutes the app completely, including voiceover... it brings music and audio volume to zero. Now it's clearer to find buttons to share, add-remove favorites, find similar stations on the iPhone version, on the browse tab, now you can easily search radio stations. flicking right, after browse heading, you find the edit box, there is no longer need to go inside car mode. But, while playing a station, on the iPhone version, you can't find similar stations on the fly. and i noticed you cannot see similar stations from iPad too! In previous version I could or am i getting lost, don't know... the issue of alarm clock is still present. there is no way to set an alarm at the time you want to! A sighted colleague told me this is a graphic wheel to turn, but voiceover detects it as a blank space. The only thing we can do now, is to continue giving them feedback. Not giving up!
Yep, I submitted an email earlier this morning about the lack of accessibillity in that regard. I haven't tried the suggested stations thing for a while, so I didn't know that changed. Though, I have always used, "Shake for related", so That part isn't the issue for me. However, the not accessible alarm/timer feature is my big thing. We shall see what happends. I hope they get back to me today, or at least, very soon.

By Elena Brescacin on Thursday, March 21, 2013 - 19:01

i do not work on development team so i do not know how they are behaving with this matter of the alarm. but, my sighted colleague told me it's a graphical object shaped as a wheel so I thought, if they do not want to eliminate the "cool graphic effect" of the wheel, they could use the voiceoverrunning control of accessibility iOS programming guide, so that, if voiceover is running, the wheel disappeers and the normal combo boxes appear otherwise if the screen reader is off, it behaves regularly using the graphic wheel. PS what is the "shake for related" function? i tried to shake my iPhone but nothing happens

Yes, the alarm clock is still not accessible with VoiceOver. I also wrote to them about this problem. We should all write back and make them aware of this problem so that it gets put higher up in their queue of "things to fix". To make it easy for others to provide the folks at TuneIn radio feedback, here is the support e-mail address: Help@TuneIn.com Amazingly, we used to be able to access the clock and alarm functionality many versions ago, but something broke and remains broken. I hope they get around to fixing this soon. I haven't gotten a reply yet. We'll see! --Pete
If you go into the iPhone settings app then go to TuneIn radio, there is an option under the player heading that says shake for related. Make sure that that's turned on. Now, when you shake your device, it will randomly choose a station that has a similar genre to what you're already playing.

Unless I am doing something wrong, I do not notice a difference when trying to set the alarm. I still can't access the spot where I need to set the time. I go to a station, click options, and choose alarm/record timer. I choose record, just for fun. I can see the days when said alarm repeats, but still no way to set the time. Is this the wrong way to do it? I'm using an IPhone 4s.
WildManJoe, Indeed. As I have seen that the Sleep Timer works great. The Alarm/Record is half way done isn't it? When I enable the Record option. The Timer does appear and pops up. However, the Alarm of when it is enabled still does show the time to set your alarm for? I apologize for that premature jump! It appears to have fixed 2 of the 3 things. Ugh! So close!
