TuneIn keeps saying that they have made accessibility improvements when using VoiceOver with this app. Yes, the program is fairly accessible...BUT... One feature that I haven't been able to use since an early version of this app is the ability to set an Alarm so that my radio station starts playing at the designated time. This used to work many versions ago, but then became inaccessible when using VoiceOver. In this latest version, 3.51, I can't even find the Alarm clock feature any more (nor could my sighted wife when not using VoiceOver). Has this feature been taken out of the app? If the feature is stil there, can it be used with VoiceOver yet? Also, if the feature is still there, how do I get to it? Thanks. --Pete

What's new in V3.6:

New:

  • Introducing TuneIn Live for iPhone, an all-new way to listen to the world's radio. The new Live screen presents album artwork and show titles that flip every time something new starts. Swipe through each tile to discover new songs or shows that just started on a station somewhere in the world. Sign up for a free TuneIn account to personalize this entire experience.
  • Never miss a live event - if a game, concert or show hasn't started yet, you can add it to your personal calendar, which will notify you when the event begins.
  • You can now share great songs and stations with your circles using Google+.
  • BMW and MINI drivers can now access TuneIn directly from their dashboards (BMW vehicles that support the BMW ConnectedDrive optional item "BMW Apps," and MINI vehicles that support the option "MINI Connected."
Improved:
  • TuneIn Live for iPad now brings you a smoother swiping experience.
  • Favorites now sync faster to your iPhone or iPad, plus, custom URLs in your Favorites are now accessible on any device when you sign in with your free TuneIn account.
  • The entire iPhone graphic interface has been updated.
For Listeners Who Use the Alarm Clock: Due to recent App Store changes, we needed to modify how our Alarm/Record Timer works. To use the Alarm/Record Timer, keep your screen on with TuneIn running in the foreground (leave "Disable Auto Lock" from the Advanced Settings menu in the "on" position). Consider using the in-app clock display to set screen brightness.

Just updated to the latest version, and poof all my favorites vanished. Amazingly, I am still logged in, and under recently played it has the last few stations, but I spent a lot of time setting my favorite stations, and now they are all gone, pretty annoying.

My favorites disappeared too. I didn't have many, but it's still the first thing I noticed after I updated the app.

I just updated TuneIn Radio, and all my favourites are still there. I wonder why some people's favourites have disappeared! Also, since when do you have to log in to TuneIn Radio? I don't remember ever having to do that, but I can still use the app, continuing to browse favourites and stations and stream them as I always have, and I didn't lose a single favourite from my list after installing this new update.
Yes, it is strange how some people have lost their favorites and others haven't. For those of you who have lost your favorites like me, I did have a pretty extensive list of stations under my recently played so I was able to just go through them and quickly re-add my favorites. A couple of other things I have noticed. When playing a station, you seem to be on a page 2 of 3. Has anyone been able to scroll to page 1 or 3? I have tried several gestures and even toggled VO off and on, but can't seem to get to the other pages. Just curious what is on them. Also, and I'm not sure if this was removed in a previous version, but there used to be a station schedule under options, I can't seem to find that anymore. I have also noticed that the streams have gone back to being fairly choppy while playing a station and attempting to use VO. Would love to hear other's feedback. Thanks

Is this a joke? The TuneIn Radio folks keep touting how accessible this program has become and how they have improved accessibility. I used to be able to set the alarm using VoiceOver many versions ago in TuneIn Radio. Then something changed and one is no longer able to set the alarm (or even determine the alarm time) using VoiceOver. This has been the case for many, many updates of the app now. Every so often the folks at TuneIn Radio say that they are aware of the problem and it will be rectified in a future version. However, the alarm feature is still not accessible with VoiceOver any more. The alarm is clearly visible to my sighted wife and she has no problem setting the time, however this time isn't even announced with VoiceOver and, of course, I can't set the time. I wish they would finally get around to fixing this instead of claiming how accessible the program is. Come on guys - If you had it working once before it shouldn't be that hard to get it working again!

By vallim on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - 00:20

I don't know whether it was always like this, but when you pause a live stream for some time and then resume by unpausing, the stream continues from where it was paused from. I can see the benaffit of this, however, sometime this behaviour is not desirable. I would have thought that pressing the stop button and then play would restart the stream at the latest point. This is not the case and the only way to start the stream from the latest point is by killing the app and starting it again. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, perhaps others would like to comment. thanks.
In addition to a Play / PPause button over the iPhone's home key, there is a Stop button a few swipes over to the right. I believe this is on the bottom right of the screen. If you hit the Play / Pause button as you describe, the app continues to download and buffer the stream. thus, when you hit Play again, it resumes from where you left off. I believe that if you hit the Stop button the app will stop buffering and downloading the stream. I am never quite sure however and always completely kill the app from the iPhone's app switcher so that I'm not accidentally downloading data forever.
I believe that the alarm was taken away a few versions ago,not sure if it has been added back yet, though. I am considering buying this app, however someone said that the latest version of tune in pro was anoying, accesswise? Anyone using the latest version of this app, your thoughts? Falcon wings.

No, the alarm feature is still in the app. My sighted wife can use it. Using VoiceOver, I can turn the alarm on/off, save the alarm setting, but one can't see or change the time of the alarm. You find the alarm settings by hitting the "Now Playing" button (at the top right), and then tapping the "Options" button. In this last dialog you will find options for setting and alarm, a sleep timer, etc.

All right, first of all, I really am not sure precisely what the Live tab is for, though it would seem that it streams live events based on selected interests. However, it seems that I am unable to select particular interests using VoiceOver. When I go to do so and double-tap on an interest, it doesn't seem to select it. Does anyone know how to select interests for the Live tab using VoiceOver?

By Misty Dawn on Saturday, June 22, 2013 - 00:20

Also, I saw a possible solution that this app's developer(s) could use to make the set alarm feature accessible. Has anyone yet actually suggested this precise fix to the app developer(s)? If not, the person who posted it in these comments, or someone who knows more about it than I do, should actually submit the idea to the app developer(s) who may really have no idea something like this exists.

Unfortunetly, there are no improvements in regarding to the accessibility portion of the app. The LIVE tab continues to be promatic and the Alarm still does not work.

As we all probably know, the so-called Search feature has always been rather limited in its abilities. Is there some other way to get to, say, a radio show's page other than through a search for it? Say, if I'm listening to All Things Considered on NPR. Can I get to the TuneIn page for All Things Considered that lists what other stations are airing it live and/or past episodes from the player page or some other way? Also, what about getting to category pages? Say, I'm listening to New Day on CNN Radio. The category is listed as "Morning Shows". Is there a way to get to those kinds of specific categories either directly from the player page or some other way?

What's New in Version 4.0 Posted Aug 26, 2013 New: • We're introducing an enhanced Now Playing screen experience. Simply swipe up or down on the Now Playing screen to see Recommendations and Recents. Improved: • We've improved Facebook sign-on. Tap just once to connect your TuneIn Radio account to Facebook. Registering for an account allows you to access your Favorites across multiple devices. • We've fixed some bugs to improve your TuneIn Radio experience. The recommendations on the now-playing screen do work, but you can't seem to swipe up and down as the description suggests. Also I'm still not able to access any kind of sleep timer, and when using VoiceOver, the audio is still choppy. Another interesting thing...on the now playing screen there is a button that says iPhone volume button. If you double-tap this button, it seems to mute VoiceOver, so be careful. If you double-tap the button again VoiceOver comes back but at a much louder level than originally so once again, keep this in mind when upgrading, if you choose to do so. I wasn't really impressed with the update, but others might find it of some use. I do think I'll be sticking with the other internet radio apps I use like Oo Tunes, which is in bad need of an update, and SHOUTcast radio, which gets updated regularly.

By peter on Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 00:20

It is a shame that the alarm used to be accessible many versions ago but, after some change by the developer, it has not been accessible using VoiceOver since. This is despite notes from many VoiceOver users to the developer. Maybe they need a few more complaints from the blindness community. Otherwise this is a nice app (even if the interface is a bit confusing - they tried to pack a lot in). --Pete

An interesting observation that I've made today regarding to the TuneIn Radio Pro. It now appears that they have increased the price for the app. The old price of $4.99 US is now set to $6.99 US. Unclear of the price bumb but just wanted to make this aware to the users.

By Misty Dawn on Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 00:20

Ever since upgradimg to iOS 7, I have been unable to refresh content using the three-finger swipe down in this and many other apps. How does one refresh content in the TuneIn Radio Pro app in iOS 7?
Because tunein does not have an option to export recordings, Do you know any way at all, but preferably an app I can get from the app store so I do not need to mess around with computers and iTunes that I can use to get recordings made from tunein off the device? What I am thinking is maybe an app that can record the sound the iPod is outputting and then email the recording or send it to dropbox. So I would open tunein and start playing what I wanted to get out of the app. Then I would open the other app and that other app would record the sound coming from tunein and send the recording as an email attachment or to dropbox. Also if you do not know of what I am suggesting, but you know of something even remotely similar, please please let me know. Thank you.

Nothing in terms of Voice Over accessibility have been resolved or improved. So this has now been removed from my device. For being a $6.99 purchase. I would recommend that you take alook at the ooTunes as an alternative solution. As they have a much better record of being accessible.

What's New in Version 5.0

New
-We’ve redesigned and optimized TuneIn Radio Pro for iOS 7
-We've added hundreds of live college basketball games, including every Pac-12 game

Improved
-We’ve fixed bugs which were causing playback or stream errors for some listeners
-We’ve fixed a bug which was causing issues when swiping up on the Now Playing screen to see Recommendations and Recents

Hello. They have fixed the searching bug. I have not seen any accessibility issues on my iPhone 5 but I'll comment back if I see anything. I just downloaded the update a few hours back and had no problems so far.

By Elena Brescacin on Friday, November 22, 2013 - 00:20

it's a year that alarm clock has become inaccessible on tune in radio It's a year that we are writing to support and they sometimes tell us it is going to be fixed. To me, at least. I am looking for an app with radio alarm clock i hope Ootunes fits my needs if so, I'll say "tune in radio ciao ciao"
Yes, that is correct the Search does work. This was corrected back over a year ago with Version 3.0. However, this was the last known improvements that they have done for Voice Over accessbility. There are unfortunately known issues. You can read about them with Comment #39 and Comment #72. So this is now going over a year now with no improvements to Voice Over. As once being in the AppleVis Hall of Fame and now has been removed and demoted. It is quite a shame that the developers have taken a deaf ear to the visually impaired community. I would encourage them in giving this a try and attempt to correct this so we could be proven wrong.
I totally understand the frustration of TuneIn Radio users who want to use the alarm clock feature which isn't accessible with VoiceOver: I don't know what the Live tab does, which was mentioned in comment 72 here, so I have no idea whether anyone is frustrated with that or not. I can also sympathise with the frustration of everyone who has reported accessibility bugs to the TuneIn Radio developers without anything being done about what they reported. However, speaking for myself, I simply use TuneIn Radio as a basic radio player, and, now that searching for stations is accessible again, I'm satisfied with this app. If others prefer other radio apps, that's their choice: it's definitely a good thing that there are other alternatives around, but I myself have no plans to stop listening to radio on my iPhone with TuneIn Radio any time soon.

By Elena Brescacin on Friday, November 22, 2013 - 00:20

hello, I am using tune in radio pro for basic listening too, but this does not hide frustration for inaccessibility issues and does not prevent me from continuing to ask developers to improve it even running the risk to "stalk" them. I am a customer and i want to be respected as such. Luckily we are free to choose, for now; nothing prevents us from having 2, or 3, or more, alternatives installed and choose one or the other according to our needs.

I totally agree with you, and I don't blame you in the least for pestering the TuneIn developers about VoiceOver accessibility problems, even though I admit I have never got into the habit of doing so myself! Although I mostly use TuneIn Radio, I have other radio apps installed, so I'd be the last person to say that TuneIn Radio is the only good app out there, as I'm also happy to use alternatives when I feel the need to do so.

By Linda on Friday, November 22, 2013 - 00:20

i understood your post to say that the recording time could be set. How do you set the recording time in advance for a weekly program, e.g. Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:00 pm? Is this information somewhere on the website or in a podcast? ?

I apologize if this question was already answered in the previous posts, but does tune in radio pro does away with those really annoying adds that force the ap to refresh to display a new add?

The TuneIn Radio developers have decided to reduce the price from being $6.99 US now to a $1.99 US purchase. However, with this new version comes along with a brand new Display Ad! Which sadly just baffles me if one is going to pay for something you would think it would be Ad Free?

What's New in Version 5.0.1

-We recently reduced the price of TuneIn Radio Pro because it now has display ads. Anyone who purchased TuneIn Radio Pro prior to version 5.0 will still be able to use it without display ads.
-This version fixes a bug that caused a pre-roll audio ad to play for listeners who purchased TuneIn Radio Pro prior to version 5.0.

Folks, How can I schedule a recording time in tunein radio? In the options screen a timer to decide howlong should the recording least is accessible, but I have not found a way of scheduling the recording to start sometime in the future. Thanks, Marlon

By Kelly Sapergia on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

Version 6.0 of TuneIn Radio Pro was posted today. Here's a list of what's new from the App store, followed by my comments:

- Updated look and feel
- TuneIn suggests stations, shows and categories to follow based on your interests
- Your past favorites are now the stations/shows you are following. You can find this in your Profile tab.
- Your personalized feed brings you live updates from the stations, shows and people you follow
- Use the Explore page to discover great new stations and shows to follow
- The TuneIn Echo lets you share what you’re listening to with your friends and followers
- Create your own profile so that your friends can follow you and what you are following on TuneIn

This new version seems fairly accessible, at least when it comes to selecting a station from what used to be the Favorites screen. Unfortunately, none of the stations I've tried will play, even after a few minutes of waiting. Thinking I had to press a Play button or something, I searched the screen, but so far haven't found anything. The Options screen where you could choose an alternative stream also appears to be missing.
I don't know if there's something I have to do to get stations to play, but at the moment, I wouldn't recommend getting this update.

Seems like I haven't been the only one having the same issue. Kelly's right people. You may want to avoid the update. On the other hand, if anyone figures out what's up, please let us know. Thanks.

I had another look at the app awhile ago, and think I figured out how to get stations to play. After you select a station from your Favorites, which is what I did, you have to double-tap on the station's slogan, or possibly a song title. In any case, a "now playing "screen should appear as the station plays, with a button to close it near the top. When the button is pressed, the station will continue to play in the background.

Hope this helps.

By blindgator on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

If you want to keep using this app do not update to the latest version, as I have not been able to get any of my favorite stations to play. This is pathetic on the developers part as they have been aware of VoiceOver for a very long time. What a joke, if I wanted to follow a radio station on Twitter I would do so using Twitter, now when you click on a station instead of playing you are taken to the stations twitter page. This app used to be great, but now it is worthless, and considering I paid for it, it will quickly be making its way off my iPhone as I believe there is another radio app that is much more accessible.

By blindgator on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

Still probably getting booted from my phone. To get a station to play from your favorites, click on it which takes you to the annoying Twitter page. Triple click VO off, tap the screen and the station will start playing you can then toggle VO back on with a triple click. At least my stations will play but this is still idiotic and not something I would expect from a developer that is well aware of VO

So its not as inaccessible as everyone thinks.
The favorites tab has been changed to profile. Double tap on the profile tab. Select whatever favorite station you have saved. Using voiceover going from the top swiping right, a user will hear back, the now plaing button, the name of the station, a description, page 1 of 2, broadcasts which is selected, followers butto, following button which is selected.

Now here is where it matters. After Following button which is selected, swipe right and you will hear Stations. Swipe right again and you will again hear the title of the station. Swipe right again and you will hear what is playing on that station. Then you can swipe right and hearprograms. In between stations and programs, you can double tap either the station title or the current playing song or program. Once you double tap, you will hear the page change and after a few seconds, the station will play.

Solved. It works completely with no fail.

For example, I live in New York. One of the stations I have favorite is 98.7 Espn New York. After selecting it from the profile tab (Remember, changed to profile from favorite tab), I will hear the following:

Back button, Now playing button, ESPN New York, Sports Talk, Page 1 of 2, Selected (Broadcasts button), Followers Button, Selected (Following Button), Stations, ESPN New York, You Know Us we know sports, Programs. I can either double tap ESPN New York or You Know US We Know Sports between the Stations and Programs. Once double Tapped, the station will play after loading for a few seconds.

Another Example:

Back, Now Playing Button, 1010 Wins, Local News, Page 1 of 2, Selected (Broadcasts Button), Followers Button, Selected (Following Button, Stations, 1010 Wins, All News all the time, programs. I can double tap either 1010 wins or All news all the time in between stations and programs and it will play the station.

Please note that sometimes, it will go stations, station title, description or song title, and then home tab. This does not change anything except now you can tap either blah blah in between stations and home tab.

Second note. I went to the home tab and signed up and created a profile. That was my choice and I don't think you need to do so. My instructions will still work. However, it couldn't hurt to create the profile and then go to the profile tab and get your favorite station.

This is not convenient. It adds a second step to the old method which was going to favorites and tapping the station and listening. Now you have to do the added step of finding the section you can double tap on. But it does work without fail and it isn't inaccessible like everyone is saying.

Please contact Tunein Radio and let them know about the problem of adding the second step. Maybe they can add a setting where a user can bypass the screen and always have their station play after tapping on it.

If my instructions were not clear, please let me know and I will attempt to be more concise.

By Unregistered User (not verified) on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

If you like, please give me an example of a station you have favorite. let me know how to search for it. If you like, I will provide instructions on how to play that station using a description of what you will hear once the station is double tapped and swping right from back, now playing button, etc.

By Clare Page on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

Hi! When I first updated to version 6.0 of TuneIn Radio Pro I also thought it was impossible to get stations to play, but since then I have done some experimenting and found two methods of doing so: these work for stations in my favourites, or under Following in the Profile tab in this new version. The first is the method described above, where you double-tap the name of the station in the list in your Profile tab, then double-tap the name again on the next screen to get the Now Playing screen to open. The other is using the Home tab, and needs less steps: the Home tab, in which you can see what is currently being broadcast on the stations in your favourites, takes a while to refresh, but when it does, swipe or scroll till you find the station you want, then swipe to the Play button and double-tap that, then the Now Pklaying screen will open as before. For those who want options, I've seen an Options button on the Now Playing screen, but I haven't double-tapped it to explore the options, as I don't use them myself.

By Joey G on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

Your correct. It is not inaccessible. The accessibility of this particular version is nice. That said, I don't like the extra step of having to tap somewhere else in the window to get the station to play. Thank you for the tip though.

By Toonhead on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

I've gotten it to work, but I'm sorry guys it's just not very intuitive. If I double-tap a station's name with VoiceOver enabled I expect to hear that station just start playing, I shouldn't have to tap on it's name twice. I know they're aware of what VoiceOver is, but I don't think accessibility with VoiceOver is a priority. I've got the app and can make it work, but it's clunky.

It might be a good idea to actually write your issues directly to Tunein radio instead of bouncing complaints back-and-forth to one another Everybody wanted a solution to actually make the stations work and multiple people provided solutions Now instead of saying you did this or you're going to revert or delete the program, How about writing to developer instead of complaining? If at least 5 to 10 of you write the same thing, the developer start to take notice. if 20, 30, 50, hundred right, the developer will possibly take notice and make changes. This website is meant to gain more information. Not To repeatedly Voice issues or complaints The same time you have spent writing your messages out could have been used to send messages to the developer directly

By DPinWI on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 00:20

I would normally agree with you about writing to developers about accessibility issues. In this case, I'm less inclined to suggest that. Tune In has a long history of ignoring things they break. Perhaps you missed the whole Hall of Fame thing. Despite promises to fix things, some functions that once worked, have been broken for a verylong time and through many updates. In this specific case, I think we are probably better served by helping each other work through the issues, rather than trying to get the developers to fix things.
