In this podcast, David Woodbridge gives us a demonstration of Light Detector, an iOS app that uses the camera on an iDevice to transform any natural or artificial light source that it encounters into sound. You will hear a higher or lower sound depending upon the intensity of the light.
The Light Detector app can help blind users to be more independent in many daily activities: at home, point your iDevice towards the ceiling to understand where the light fixtures are and whether they are switched on. In a room, move the device along the wall to check if there is a window and where it is.
You can find out whether the shades are drawn by moving the device up and down.
Away from home, Light Detector can help you to quickly familiarize yourself with new locations.
Light Detector is a 99 cents download from the iTunes App Store.
