In this episode, Thomas Domville demonstrates the call recording and transcription feature in iOS 18.1. This update brings an exciting built-in call recording capability to iPhones. Recording a call is straightforward: just double-tap the Record button in the top left corner during a call (note that you might need to hide the keypad to see the button). A voice message will notify all participants that the call is being recorded. These recordings are saved directly in the Notes app, which uses end-to-end encryption to keep your conversations private. To review a call, simply go to the Notes app, and you'll find your recordings securely stored there. Additionally, iOS 18.1 offers automatic transcription, generating real-time captions and notes during your call. This feature makes it easy to reference important points later, with transcriptions handled entirely on your device to ensure privacy, with no data sent to external servers. Furthermore, supported iPhone models can provide summaries of these recordings, making it even easier to keep track of your conversations.

Hello and welcome.
My name is Thomas Domville, also known as AnonyMouse.
I want to show you a feature called call recording and transcription.
This is a beautiful feature that allows you to record your phone call.
And yes, you're able to get a transcription of what transpired within that conversation of the phone call.
Very useful for any time that you want to record a meeting or conversation.
Maybe perhaps you're doing an interview with somebody or just simply just want to record for keepsake.
Whether there's somebody close to your family you just want to have for record, for archival, or maybe you have a business transition or phone call you just want to make sure it's recorded.
Now a couple things I want to note about this feature is that I always like to let people know that I'm about to record them.
So it's kind of a respectful kind of a thing and not to get them caught off guard.
So some people can maybe kind of leery about those kind of things that you just all of a sudden you just pop on them that you're recording their phone calls and such.
Make sure you tell them that you're about to record them.
Now even though Apple put a great safety feature in this and if you begin the recording no matter what you do it's going to let that recorder know that the phone call is being recorded.
So that is a nice feature that Apple ensured that everybody knows that the phone call is being recorded.
Now before you can use this feature you'll have to turn this option on and that's within the settings.
So let's head over to settings.
Settings.
Double tap to open.
You one finger double tap on settings.
Settings.
Now what we're looking for and we're looking for the phone app.
Now the phone app now lives in the app section.
Yep.
So at the very bottom of the settings so I'm going to do a four fingers tap at the bottom half of my phone here.

So swipe to the right until you find call recording.

Now my case is turned on so we got to make sure that is set on.
If it's off for you just do one finger double tap and then select to turn this option to on.
Now I'm going to show you how to use that.
So I'm going to place a phone call to my mom.
Yep.
Grandma mouse.
You get to hear for yourself.
I'm going to show you exactly where the recording button is.
Where you can initiate the recording.
And how to stop the recording.
And then after the phone conversation I'll show you where the phone call went.
Where did the actual audio go.
So I'll show you where that went along with the transcription.
So give my mom a call and say hi to her and show you how to do the recording.
Calling Carol Dumbville iPhone.
Focaster baby phone call.
This is context five.
OK everybody this is my mom.
This is grandma mouse for say.
And we're going to show everybody how to use this recording.
Now when you first call someone you need to let them know that you're about to say I'm going to record this phone call.
So that's kind of a respectful kind of a thing to let them know.
So they're not startled or caught off guard that you're doing the recording.
Now the first thing we have to do we have to hide the key.
You will notice that you have the nine key pen with the numbers.
You got the one two three four five six seven eight nine pound and star.
You need to go to the bottom of the device and I'm going to tap on the bottom half with my four fingers.
One tap.

That's a great question.

Those with Apple Intelligent you can get a summary of the phone call which is beautiful.
You have to have Apple Intelligent for this particular feature but the other two features to get the transcription and to be able to do the call recording it does not require Apple Intelligent.
Now right below this this is where the transcript lives.
You.
Button.
Double tap to scrub to this position.
Now this is the beautiful part about the transcription.
It knows and it's smart enough to know you and the caller itself.
So it says you and so it's going to hear me talking in that conversation.
I want to hear that beep.
You know you're recording the phone call.
How are your mom?
How are you doing?

Having a fantastic day.
Hopefully everybody else is too.
Button.
Double tap to scrub to this position.

Thanks mom.
I'm going to show them how to turn this off.
So let's go there.
So let's do one finger double tap on that.
Awesome.
Thanks mom.
Thanks mom.
I'm going to show them how to turn this off.
Is that not cool?
So that is how you use a call recording and transcription.
That so you have to go into the notes app and be sure to find that recording and you're able to play the whole conversation or you can just go to a specific portion of the phone conversation and start from that point.
So if it's a really long conversation, you just want to go back to a certain point.
And yes, you can even copy this if you want to keep the transcript.
And to do that, we'll go to the top left again to go through the top.
Sheet grabber.
Button.
And what we're looking for is the more info button.
So swipe to the right until you get to more info.
Call with Carol Riedelbatsch Domville today for 16 one minute 17 seconds.
More button.
There's your more button.
One finger double tap on that.
Rename.
Button.
Where you get the option to rename it.
Add transcript to note.
Button.
Copy transcript.
Button.
And that's how you copy the transcript itself.
How sweet is that?
Now as a bonus, there are some more things you can do with this.
If you go to the right.
Find in transcript.
Button.
Yes, you can search through the transcript.
That is very useful as well.
So you don't have to swipe, swipe, swipe until you find a very long lengthy 30 minute conversation of a particular conversation you want.
You can do a search.
And then lastly, as a bonus.
Save audio to files.
Button.
Yes, you can save the audio to files.
So meaning you can capture that audio and transfer it to your device so you can have a hard copy of the audio file itself.
So that is how you use the call recording with the transcript.
My name is Thomas Domville, also known as AnonyMouse.
Until next time, bye bye.

Works well on mac too. Very nice feature. Thanks for the podcast.
@TheBllindGuy07
How does this work on Mac?
When the transcript and recording features were originally announced, I thought, wow this would be so good for legal matters, or reporting scams. But then when I found out you would be notified at the call was being recorded I was like, Well then yeah.
But is this feature supported on all devices or devices that support Apple Intelligence?
I haven't tried this but I…
I haven't tried this but I asume that it's a non ai feature as my iphone 14 seems to offer the transcription ooption. On mac you just clikc transcription during or after recording in voice memo and you have an interactable element with the transcription. However as of writing live transcription barely work with VO.
