iOS and iPadOS Apps

Introduction

VoiceOver, a feature Apple has built into all iOS devices to enable Braille and speech access for users who are unable to see the screen, has revolutionized the lives of countless thousands of blind people around the world. It works best when apps are deliberately developed in ways that ensure compatibility with VoiceOver, blind people are considered during development and included in all facets of the testing process.

Can My iOS Device Be a GPS?

Probably. If you have an iPhone or a cellular-capable iPad, then you can start using GPS apps right away. Owners of wifi-only iPads or all iPod Touch models do not have this luxury.

I would like to credit Zack Kline for all the help he gave me in learning the game and the games author David Dunham of a-sharp for making the game in the first place and taking the time to make it as accessible as is.

In this guide, I'm going to explain how you can visualise the layout of iOS apps using voiceOver, or VO for short. even though you may be totally blind. This can be done quite easily, even without using a ScreenDots protector, or relying on a bluetooth keyboard for navigation purposes.

I understand that everyone is different, so if you do find these accessories essential, then by all means continue to use them. However, if you master the below techniques, I believe you'll be able to use your iDevice as efficiently as your sighted peers.

Tabata Stopwatch Pro is a great app, and it is easy to use.
When opening the app, it will sound something like this.

When swiping right, it will say Press play to start
After swiping right again, it will say Loaded Preset Tabata
After swiping right again, it will say Last workout x days ago
Swipe right, it has an inspirational quote. For example “Believe you can, and your half way there.” Theador Rusavelt.
Swipe right again, there is a play button, and then a stop button. Following this, there is a settings menu.

In the AppleVis help section, there's a topic which describes how to obtain a link to an app in the iTunes store. I have a more simple procedure which will also help you search for interesting apps. In to google, type the information you are seeking, for example "SIP client iPhone" or "app compatible voiceover" or "text adventure iPhone" Don't include the quotes unless you want to match an exact phrase. After that, type iTunes, and submit your search. You can then copy the link from your address bar, after you've located the appropriate page through google.

For some time now, users of braille displays have wantted to be able to read brf files from various sources such as the NLS Web Braille collection, Bookshare, and other sources around the world. I'm here to tell you that it's possible to do so using the following steps, but you'll still be very limited in the way in which you can navigate through content. For example, there is no way to bookmark a place in your file, and since iOS does not have a find function, you can't get there quickly through that manor either.

Hello, everyone. Two years and literally thousands of changes later, the second edition of Personal Power is now available. It's an ebook which I wrote and am giving away freely. Basically, the book takes people from setting up their iPhones to thriving in the iOS environment. It teaches how to use VoiceOver, the various parts of iOS, and a whole lot of apps.

Here is a procedure to play chess using Facebook Messenger application.
Note: this is text-only mode, it's as simple as a chat; for a blind user, it's recommended to have a real chess board in proximity to study the positions and perform moves, but it's also good for people who knows to play chess by heart.
It is simply a server which stays between you and your opponent.
Just select a contact you wish to play with, and then, use this command:
@fbchess play

If you open a webpage that doesn't have access to the Safari Reader and is difficult to navigate you could try saving it as a PDF. Admittedly you won't be able to interact with it and open links and drop down menus etc, but if you just want to be able to read general information more easily it may be useful. Just select the share button and choose Save PDF to iBooks. Once in iBooks you would need to tap on the document and set the rotor to something like lines and flick down to read the content. Let me know if anyone else has used this method.

The speaker has its companion app, Amazon Alexa, for enabling skills and interacting with all your Alexa-enabled devices. The Echo Dot is a suitable choice for you or your family if you want something small on the outside, but big on the inside, and for a cheap price between $50-100USD.

As a Voiceover user, the Simplenote app by Automatic is an app I use daily. It's free and are versions for IOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and in a browser.

Your notes sync seamlessly between platforms, no extra steps required.

You can read all about it here but I will focus on two features I find most useful as a Voiceover user of the IOS app in particular.

If you have Microsoft Outlook, it can use several methods for syncing your contacts with your iPHONE; this guide doesn't cover that.

If you use iTUNES whether or not you also use Outlook, it too, has many ways to work with your contacts.

But for me, both iTUNES and Microsoft Exchange have tended to mess up my contacts as much as automate the sync process, so I have found another, and what I believe is a safer way for Windows users to keep contacts in order.

Creating a channel on Zello can be hard if it is your first time. But with a little help it will be so much easier.
To create a channel, tap the Navigation Menu button if VoiceOver is on.
Tap on the Channels button, then tap Add Channel. There are three options, Find a Channel, Trending Channels, and Create a Channel.
Choose the third option.
Name your channel, then add a description about it.
Choose the type of channel you want to create.
Anyone can talk: Anybody that adds your channel can talk.

1
Double tap the Menu button.

2
Double tap Settings.

3
Double tap Push to Talk button.

4
Choose an option:
* press and hold
* toggle (meaning double tap on the screen to talk and double tapping again to stop.)
