Apple Watch & iPhone Notifications

Hello,

I’m wondering if it’s possible to have both the iPhone and Apple Watch vibrate simultaneously when receiving text or email messages. From what I understand, the iPhone must be locked or inactive for the Watch to vibrate—and likewise, when the iPhone is active, the Watch doesn’t vibrate. Is that correct?

I’ve noticed some people prefer both devices to vibrate at the same time, but I’m unsure if this is even possible.
