The other day I discovered an Apple gift card that I received as a promotion when I bought my iPhone 4s about 5 years ago. I thought it had run out but when I added the code to my iTunes account, I was credited with £70 which I believe is just over 100 dollars. The credit shows on my iTunes account just to the right of where I write my password when purchasing something. However, on the app store the credit does not show.
Does this mean I cannot buy apps with the credit or will the credit be used automatically when I buy an app? What happens once I put in my password, does the app store (or iTunes if I buy some music) ask whether I want to use the credit or whether I want the balance off my credit card?
Thank you,

using credit
I believe it defaults to using your available store credit first.
Credit card versus store credit
Hi. I don't know about UK prices since i'm in America, I do know that say you buy something for 9.99 or ten dollars to make it even. It will take that ten bucks plus whatever your tax purchase rate is, so you may be losing faster then you realize. I understand why this happens but I'd rather be able to let the tax go to the card, not the gift card fist. Soif you understand what i mean you might find thirteen dollars gone, because of that new album.
