This week I set up Apple Pay and started using it. While I like the security and independence, it's not the panacea I was hoping for.
My first issue is that when paying, I cannot tell how much is being charged. The main reason I wanted to start using it was to get away from blindly trusting a store clerk to use the terminal for me. I had hoped that when the Apple Pay app launched it would tell me how much was being charged. No such luck.
A minor second issue is that I still have to navigate two buttons on the terminal. One to indicate debit or credit, even though I am using a credit card, and a second to complete the transaction. I was hoping it would be totally seamless and I would not have to learn every terminal I may encounter. As I said, this one is minor, but still.
Over all, I like it as my card never leaves my wallet. I assume Apple figures we can see the amount charged on the terminal and that's why it's not in the app. I thought maybe i could look up a history, but no luck with that either. I'm still left checking my bank account to ensure the correct amount was charged.
It's not a huge leap, but it's definitely a baby step.
I am not clear how apple pay works precisely, because I used apple pay once and then I didn't have to do anything on my iPhone the person with the terminal did something and it was able to contact my iPhone and I made the payment, I actually had to place my phone into the reader in like a cradle.
However I found out recently that you can access stored cards without having to unlock your phone, you just double press the home button, and you get a little dialogue up that shows you your stored apple pay card, and it says hold near reader to pay and also offers the option to pay using touch ID.
so what is the difference between these two modes? does the double pressing of the home button mean you minimise need to interact with the terminal if your kind of activating the apple pay mode on your phone yourself?
also I believe receipts for transactions are accessible from within wallet as I have scene reference to being able to access transaction receipts, not immediately obvious I just stumbled across it, I am looking forward to the chance of trying apple pay again and seeing if this works.
though I am not sure if shops have to have special terminals to be able to use apple pay, I only got to use it when I did because the shop I was in advertised it was supported and the person I was with pointed it out.
I have used it twice, both times at Subway. Each time, the clerk told me the total. I held my phone down next to a spot on the register, and when the clerk said "okay", I double tapped my home button, then held my finger on the Touch ID. A few seconds later, there was a vibration on my phone, and that was it. Payment processed. I believe I was shown the amount charged, but I definitely received an e-mail from either Apple or my bank telling me that a payment of such-and-such amount had been made. That's all there was to it for me.
I've been using it for a few months now. After a few clumsy attempts I think I've figured it out.
I prefer to double tap the home button before placing the phone over the scanner. Not sure exactly how long, but once you do this you have something in the neighbourhood of 20 seconds to process the payment before the phone will need your finger print again.
I tell the clerk I'm using a credit card and usually do not have to press any buttons on the terminal.
For some reason I initially assumed the IR chip was at one end of my phone, so would try poking the phone at the terminal. Sometimes it wouldn't scan. I've had much better luck just placing the center of the phone on top of the terminal.
I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think my case interferes with the IR chip ever so slightly. It works fine with the case on, but when I've tried it with no case the scanner seems to pick up the phone from a slightly greater distance.
When the payment is processed my phone vibrates to let me know the transaction is complete. The wallet app sends me a notification with the name of the retailer and the amount.
Loving it so far.
When I use Apple pay, I just hold my phone to the terminal and place my finger on the home button. Within seconds my phone vibrates and my transaction is complete.
I don't however have any store cards and only one debit card.
I have used it several times and all I have to do is wave my phone over the card reader I put my hand on it then I know where it is and for the receipt option you have to make sure that card medications are on inside the actual card in the wallet if that makes sense and I've had no problems with it But I only have one card on file if you have more than one before you use your Touch ID and I don't know how you would go about choosing different cards but yes once you wait it or put the phone on or near the reader the card will pop up and all you have to do is put your finger in your ID will read it and it should make a beep and vibrate And I did let the person that is giving mean that I'm buying from they tell the amount to me then I know what it is and also I know from my notification receipt I hope that answers some questions about it and clears up son And I hope my describing of it was understandable and when you put the phone over the readder the card pop up automatically so you don't have to unlock your phone to use it when I've used it
I've used Apple Pay with my watch a few times. There are still only a limited number of stores that accept Apple Pay in the UK, so the number of opportunities are few.
I just double-click the friend button on the side, and then turn my wrist over and hold the screen of the watch close to the reader. After a few seconds, it will chime very quietly and vibrate.
The commonest issue is that the terminal reader doesn't work very well. I've had to try once or twice in those cases. Plus, often the assistant doesn't know how the system works, and will say all sorts of inaccurate things, like you have to touch the reader with the watch, or you have to hold the reader over the watch, rather than the other way around. In those cases, I try to explain how NFC chips work, but clearly some staff training is required.
Like others, I do not get any kind of email or notification about the transactions, so would be interested in how to enable this. I've looked in the wallet app, and don't see any options to do this. Might it be dependent on the bank?
Hi, a few things.
I think with apple pay you can't change what cards are used on the fly when paying, however in the wallet and apple pay settings it says default card then my card details, so I presume if I had more than one card I could change the default card here that I pay with, though perhaps there is a way to select on the fly when using the double clicking home button method I don't know but perhaps as it shows the details of the added card it would show other cards if you have them added to apple pay and you can double tap them to select I don't know.
as to receipts this is what I have in my wallet in the actual wallet app itself.
I go into wallet and it says NatWest card number ending with x, then flicking to the right of that it says from NatWest which is a heading.
then flicking to the right of that it says NatWest visa debit is ready for apple pay.
I am offered a rotor action to delete the card at this point, if I flick to the right of this text though I see a more info button.
if I tap the more info button I see the following text saying NatWest installed, then a switch saying card notifications on, and to the right of that text saying show card transactions in messages from NatWest.
then flicking to the right of this I see a heading of transactions.
if I flick to the right of this I see text saying no transactions are available because I haven't used apple pay since adding this card.
to the right of this I see text saying transactions show are purchases made with this iPhone and that for a full history I should check my NatWest statement.
then to the right of this text is a contact NatWest option.
to the right of this is then various bits of information about my card, account number and billing address which you can also fill in in the wallet settings.
to the right of this there is then a link to the privacy policy.
I should also say I have the NatWest mobile banking app installed, I wonder if maybe receipts depend on you having your banks mobile banking app installed.
Hi.
I have used Apple Pay mainly for getting deliveries from take away (fast food) places, namely through the Just Eat app. However, I am having a problem changing my delivery address with Apple Pay.
I am able to add and select the address I want to use but when I hit the back button and try to pay, the old delivery address shows on the confirmation screen. Anyone have any tips to get around this? Maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks
A
ps.
I used it in Morrison's Supermarket the other day and it worked fine. I apparently had a notification on my screen saying that the amount had gone from my account. That information is also available if you tap on your card in Wallet. I thought this might help the person who was having problems seeing transactions.
I'd like to try it. Too bad I can't find anywhere that'll take it. Even the local franchises of the chains that are supposed to accept it don't have it around here. I suppose I can try it next time I go to an Apple store if nothing else, but so far I've been disappointed at how very few places even know about it let alone take it.
I've decided to finally try Apple Pay and have set it up on my phone and watch. My first question, which there seemed to have an answer for in an earlier post, was do you have to place your finger on the home button first before putting your phone on the reader, or can you just put your phone near the reader first and then place your finger on the home button? By doing this, wouldn't you see the amount appear on your phone's screen?
With regards to seeing a purchase history in the wallet app, I did read that not all banks support this feature, I know mine doesn't, so I have to open my banks app and view my history from there.
I am looking forward to trying this for the first time today. My bank has support it for over a year now but I was always hesitant to try it, but I figured since I got my watch, what the hell, let's give it a try, plus my card expires in a month or so, so I can try it until then and if I don't like it, no harm done.
I was wondering if anyone may have an answer for this one, but when you make purchases on your iPhone with Apple Pay, you get a notification of the transaction. If you make a purchase using your Apple Watch, do notifications of these purchases appear on your iPhone or perhaps on your watch?
So far it seems as though any purchase you make using your watch, it doesn't appear in the Wallet app on your phone, only purchases mnade on your phone appear there.
I've had the opportunity to use Apple Pay three separate times now, and I have enjoyed the experience. It's quick, it's easy, and in one instance when I left my debit card at home, it was a lifesaver. I can see it being really useful when traveling as I don't particularly like carrying a lot of cash or cards on me when I am out of town.
I think all the stores in Canada should be encouraged to use Apple Pay, because many Canadians had their credit cards stolen. I've never had any experiences with Apple Pay, but when I get my iPhone 6S, I might be able to use it. I am not sure why Apple didn't make Apple Pay available on the iPhone 5S. Maybe because it doesn't have the NFC chip?
I love the idea of Apple Pay. Trust me, it convenient and nice to know that even if I forget my wallet I can make a purchase if I am in a pinch. Once thing that I have learned though is that you still have to stay safe. When using Apple Pay you are transmitting your information to another computer and if someone is very tech savvy I am sure they can get your information. I make sure that I have a VPN installed on my phone. You can check out the best ones at https://securethoughts.com/3-best-vpns-iphone/. Just make sure you stay safe because there are people out there who will do anything to take your money!
From what I've gathered by articles and videos is that once you enter your card, the phone creates a virtual number and saves it, and I believe its encrypted, onto a secure element that can only be access by your fingerprint. When making a purchase, your card information is not transmitted to the machine, but a one time use code or token is used for that particular purchase and the code or token changes for each purchase. Now I've always learned that nothing is 100% safe, but it is a hole lot secure then using your card and entering in your code each time. This way, only your fingerprint can authenticate and authorise the purchase. Even if someone steals your phone, they need your fingerprint in order to complete the purchase. Now the likelyhood of someone going that far just to use your credit card is quite a extreme. I believe that Apple Pay only works on the iPhone 6/6 Plus and up as they have NFC and have that secure element chip.
As for the watch, if configured correctly by having your watch lock as soon as it comes off your wrist, someone would have to steal your watch and know your code to unlock your watch in order to make a purchase with it. And like the phone, it too is stored the same fashion as on the phone and transmits the same way as the phone too. So I believe that it is pretty secure on its own.
In Canada, any store that has that Tap-and -Go feature, Apple Pay will work with that.
Blinken223 thanks for that. I didn't realize that's how it worked, though I would still be hesitant to trust something with my information as there is always a loophole and there are always people searching for those holes to get your money. I will still be sure to be very careful if and when I use Apple Pay, as I think everyone should.
Today my experience with Apple Pay was very good. I like how Apple made it very secure. I also like how in the wallet app VoiceOver gives you the location of where you made the transaction. I don't even have to read the screen. I can just bring up my iPhone SE to the terminal and use the touch Id. I am wondering what Apple will do with Apple Pay in the future. Maybe they will bring Apple Pay to the iPod touch?

Following some suggestions found here, although my screen is not the same, I found transaction history items. This is good.
