voiceover no longer announcing page numbers when navigating through documents in pages app on macbook air m1

Hi all, I was using pages on mac tonight. At one point, I either hit the function key or the mouse, and brought up a menu. I pressed escape and worked on my document. When I pressed function, option and up arrow to go up page by page, I got how many lines were visible, (one line) but no announcement of what page I was on. Usually I get the page number information. I tried with another document, and got the same issue. I restarted my mac and still don't hear the page numbers. If anyone knows how to fix this I would be very grateful. Please give clear step by step instructions so I can fix the issue as quickly and easily as possible. :)
I am using a 13 inch macbook air m1 running the latest version of mac OS, monterey, version 12.3, macbook air 2020 M1 chip.
