Voiceover cuts out when using the mac

Hi,
Does anyone know why sometimes when I use my mac voiceover will sometimes cut out? I get the usual clicks and sounds that come with voiceover, just no voice. The only way to fix it is to turn voiceover off and back on. My mac is a mid 2014.
