Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if there was a way to set it up so I could use touch ID at the log in screen rather than my passcode. I thought this was possible, but now i can't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Yes there is. If you go to your Touch ID settings, you should see something that says use Touch ID to unlock your Mac.

I saw that, but I thought that only applied to sleep mode because every time I start up the mac after it's in shut down, it requires a passcode.

If you let VoiceOver speak long enough at the log-on prompt, you will hear a message that your password is required to use touch ID on the Mac. I don't think this can be changed, but I would be happy to be proven wrong about this.

This is standard behavior on all apple devices, watch, iphones, and ipads etc. When you restart or turn on phone you have to enter the password before face id / touch id will work, pretty sure it’s for security reasons.

You have to type in your password/pen every time you reboot your device, every 48 hours, or after five failed fingerprint unlock attempts. Also, if you own an Apple Watch, you can set your Mac up to be unlocked just by being near your Mac while wearing your Apple Watch.

HTH.

This is a requirement for iPad and any thing that will restart. Same for watch. Long live cats.
