Selecting and De-Selecting Files in Mountain Lion

Hi. I'm writing on behalf of someone who is just beginning to use VoiceOver on a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. They have found David Woodbridge's tutorials really helpful but, when following his instructions for selecting and de-selecting files (they're trying to select individual files while selecting more than one at a time ... for example, the first/third/fifth in a list), it doesn't seem to be working for them. They are turning off tracking and are then able to select another file but, when they move down to their third file and select it, the one above automatically de-selects (in other words, they are only ever able to highlight the file on which the VoiceOver cursor is focused and one other). Can anyone please advise on how to solve this problem, either through a new set of commands or via changes in the System Preferences? Many thanks in advance.
