Hi, it's not free, but you might look into Pocket cast; there is a trial period for their web app. I have not tried the web site on a Mac, because I do not use the Mac any more, but it is very usable on Windows and iOS. I tried over 10 different podcast players looking for an option that would sink across Windows and iOS, so that I could launch Itunes into the Sun. Pocket cast was the best option I found. I don't use the different speeds option, but I have heard people say it works well. One thing I should mention, I use chrome extensions on Windows to get volume controls and a global hot key for play/pause; because of the way voice Over works, I'm not sure if such extensions would be usable on the Mac. You might also look into Overcast. I believe I like the web player of Overcast better then pocket cast, and I think you can use it for free. I chose pocket cast because I think the iOS overcast app is lacking in basic features, but try it out.
Sorry it isn't free, but have a look at downcast for the mac. It is very accessible and offers different playback speeds amongst other things. I quite enjoy it and definitely believe it to be worth the money.
