Problems with Column View in MacOS 10.9 Maverics

Hello everyone, I prefer column view as it allows me to navigate folders using the arrow keys to open and close them. I find that, however, in 10.9, when I open Documents from the desktop with shift+command+D, I hear "Browser" and am not able to navigate. The arrow keys say nothing and I sometimes hear "scroll area" and nothing else. If I open the home folder, though and navigate to documents from there, this problem does not occur. It only occurs when attempting to open the documents folder from the desktop. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It has to be with column view enabled; the problem does not occur for me using list view. Thanks, Robert

I think the command to open documents is command-shift-o. Command-shift-d always takes me to the desktop and the shift-command-o always opens my documents folder. JimHi Robert!

Yes, my apologies; I meant to say shift+VO+O for Documents.

as a matter of fact, this is one of the main reasons i restored back to mountain lion. finder in mavericks can't handle directories contain large number of files. that's an understatement. based on my own testing, it can't handle directories contain as little as 250 files. also, this appears to be a voiceover problem, because i can highlight files in the folder by touching the trackpad, so the files are there, you simply can't browse them with keyboard and voiceover.
