Keychain or 1Password

macOS and Mac Apps

So I have both a Mac and a Windows computer but at this point I am using the Mac over 90% of the time. When I was on the PC more I was using 1Password because Keychain obviously doesn’t work on Windows. I moved to the Mac and began using Keychain. I turned it back on and turned 1Password off on my iPad and iPhone.

Now I’m having second thoughts and want the opinions of others. How easy is 1Password to use on the Mac. I actually really disliked it in Chrome for windows because it felt like navigating it wasn’t very intuitive, but is it easy to use across the board on Mac?

I love the fact that on the rare occasions I open up the PC it will be there. I like the fact that it can be used across the board on the Mac not just in Safari? Providing it’s accessible, the only real downfall I can see is having to download both an app and browser extensions which all and all isn’t a big deal.

I probably could have made this post a lot shorter, but anyway, thanks in advance for the help.

It's possible that you found navigation cumbersome on Windows because you were using 1PasswordX, rather than 1Password. With 1PasswordX, everything takes place within your browser. 1Password 7 is a stand-alone Windows application that still integrates with all modern browsers, but in my view is easier to use from an accessibility point of view. I devoted an episode of the Mosen At Large Podcast, episode 74, to a demo of 1Password for Windows. You can scroll through the archives in any podcast app or listen online." In my view if you use Windows even just occasionally, 1Password is a great choice since your passwords will be available on all the devices you use and you'll be less inclined to fall back on easily-remembered passwords that compromise your security.

Another one which is quite accessible on iOS and, despite some weirdnesses on the firefox addon, is not bad.

Correct. I was installing the extensions and using the shortcut to open the extension without ever opening the full 1Password app. The next time I’m on my Windows computer I’ll have to see what kind of a difference that makes. Thank you.

I would say 1Password if you use windows frequently, but if you use it 10% of the time which kind of matches my personal use case keychain is fine, I just use 1Password on the iPhone to read passwords when I'm using windows which is less than 10% of the time for me, of course this is more cumbersome than the automation benefit but my own use case doesn't justify paying the subscription cost of 1Password. For me if I used windows 40% of the time or higher, that would justify the cost for me. Just my opinion.
