Interacting with and using tables in pages

Hi!
Does anyone have any tips, suggestions, or keyboard shortcuts for interacting with and editing tables on the Mac using voice over? For many tables, when I arrow through them, it will select the cells and when I type something into a cell, it deletes what was there previously. Is there anyway I can just edit what is in a cell? I'm also having a problem with voiceover saying A1 through D1 selected, but not saying what is in the actual cells. Is there something I need to do to make it more user-friendly?
