How to open attachments in mail on the Mack

Hi everyone.
I was wondering how to open an attachment in mail other then Pages. When I'm in a mail message and there's an attachment, I do VO +shift+M and that says open, open in...and when I say Text Edit it doesn't do anything. I know you can set the default to open somewhere else. But still. Thank you.
