Help me with Apple Scripting

Greeting everyone! I have been messing with script editor in Lion and I am not having much success. So far all I can work out is how to make it talk…which is dumb because I use voicee over and it already talk, and beep. I have tried to do research into how exactly I am supposed to write scripts, where the quotes and brackets go, and the words I should use, but I just can't grasp it. Can someone please help me out?
