Help with Mac OS Sierra

I just upgraded to Mac OS Sierra and discovered I lost the ability to mute Voiceover with the 'Ctrl' key and the use of phonetics when I interact with text and pause on a character. Are the options I need to set in Voiceover Utility or System Preferences? If so, where?
Any help will be great. Thanks.

Yeah it happens here, I just use two-finger tap on the trackpad to stop speech. Sometimes it works to press the control key, that seems inconsistent but when reading a lengthy text the issue appears to come up.
