When I was, there was an app called caffeine I think. It stopped the laptop from going to sleep for any reason. It just overrides it all and keeps it awake.

Use amphetamine. It'll do the same thing, its on the mac app-store. Also to answer your question, yes, you can close the lid without the computer going to sleep without it being connected to power.

You can run the caffeinate command in the MacOS Terminal. It will prevent the system from entering sleep (suspend) mode for as long as the supplied command runs, or, if no command is given, until you type ctrl-c. See the manual page for details.

Even running a program like those mentioned above will not work as once you shut the lid they will disengage. The only way to have this work would be to have a external monitor. I have tried with amphetamine, and saddly with out a external screen I couldn't get it to work with just my keyboard.

If we're talking that its a computer that doesn't come with a monitor by default, I.e, desktop macs, yes. However if its a laptop... those have a monitor built-in so no worries there it'll work. And since post one said macbook... i'm guessing he's referring to laptop not desktop with this. So yeah, external monitors only apply if the you need a external monitor plugged in, i.e, imac, mac studeo, and other desktop systems, but laptops no need to worry about this.
Also, regarding insomnia x, I think it still works last I checked, abou a year back or so. That's a option too as well. In either case both programs are free so it really come down to personal preference as to what you want to use, however amphetamine does offer way more compared to insomnia x, feature wise.
